DESCRIPTION:The 42nd annual MOJA Arts Festival will run Sept. 24 through O
 ct. 1 at locations across Charleston\, featuring local and national perfor
 mers. This is the first year the festival has been planned by MOJA Arts\, 
 a newly formed 501(c)(3) nonprofit created to stabilize and grow the event
  long-term. \nThe festival is shortening from 11 days to eight this year a
 nd introducing a new tradition: honoring the cultural legacies of four Wes
 t African and Caribbean nations. The 2026 festival will spotlight Barbados
 \, Gullah Geechee\, Jamaica and Sierra Leone. \nThe festival finale at Ham
 pton Park will highlight the 50th anniversary of several iconic 1976 album
 s\, anchored by a free\, family-friendly concert produced by Ray Chew of C
 hew Entertainment and Charleston’s Tommy Brown. The lineup draws from St
 evie Wonder’s “Songs in the Key of Life\,” Parliament’s “Mothers
 hip Connection\,” Marvin Gaye’s “I Want You\,” Earth\, Wind & Fire
 ’s “Spirit\,” Curtis Mayfield’s “Sparkle” soundtrack\, The Isl
 ey Brothers’ “Harvest for the World\,” Rose Royce’s “Car Wash”
  soundtrack and Roy Ayers’ “Ubiquity.”

DESCRIPTION:Maha Shivaratri is an annual festival dedicated to the Hindu g
 od Shiva\, and is particularly important in the Shaivism tradition of H
 induism. Unlike most Hindu festivals which are celebrated during the day\,
  the Maha Shivaratri is celebrated at night. Furthermore\, unlike most Hin
 du festivals which include expression of cultural revelry\, the Maha Shiva
 ratri is a solemn event notable for its introspective focus\, fasting\, m
 editation on Shiva\, self study\, social harmony and an all night vigil a
 t Shiva temples. The celebration includes maintaining a “jaagaran“\, a
 n all-night vigil and prayers\, because Shaiva Hindus mark this night as 
 “overcoming darkness and ignorance” in one’s life and the world thro
 ugh Shiva. Offerings of fruits\, leaves\, sweets and milk to Shiva are ma
 de\, some perform all-day fasting with vedic or tantric worship of Shiva\,
  and some perform meditative Yoga. In Shiva temples\, “Om Namah Shivay
 a“\, the sacred mantra of Shiva\, is chanted through the day. Devotee
 s praise Shiva through the recitation of Shiv Chalisa. Maha Shivaratri is
  celebrated over three or ten days based on the Hindu luni-solar calendar.
  Every lunar month\, there is a Shivaratri (12 per year). The main festiv
 al is called Maha Shivaratri\, or great Shivaratri\, which is held on 13th
  night (waning moon) and 14th day of the month Phalguna. In the Gregoria
 n calendar\, the day falls in either February or March.
