DESCRIPTION:Spotted: Weekend Brunch at Miller’s All Day (Downtown Charle
 ston)\nIf sweet\, savory\, + all-around delicious are your brunch vibe\, h
ead to Miller’s All Day on Lower King Street for a top-tier weekend trea
 t. This retro–meets–farm‑to‑table hotspot is open for weekend brun
ch Saturdays + Sundays from 8 AM to 4 PM\, making it perfect for both
early risers + leisurely late-sleepers. \nWhat Makes It Shine\nNathan Thur
ston – who’s got a serious resume around Charleston – and Geechie
Boy miller Greg Johnsman joined forces to bring grains to life\, right in
the front window. That antique mill is more than decor\; it’s the heart
of their small-batch grain promise\, grounding every dish in local flavor.
  \nMenu Highlights\n\n\nFresh-baked treats: cinnamon rolls\, banana bread
with chocolate-hazelnut cream cheese\, + signature French toast sticks ful
l of gooey goodness. \n\n\nHearty plates: Shrimp + Grits with tasso\, mush
rooms\, benne seeds + Jim-Red Corn grits. Or go classic with the Miller’
 s Plate – two eggs\, grits or home fries\, bacon\, + a biscuit. \n\n\nCr
eative bowls + sandwiches: Avocado toast with whipped feta + soft egg\, or
MAD Patatas Bravas with brisket sausage + Cotija cheese. \n\n\nBrunch Coc
 ktails & Coffee\nWhether you’re into a classic prickly-pear mimosa (so g
 ood\, Yelp says)\, or espresso martinis + bloody-mary flights\, the cockta
il program hits just right. Springbok Coffee keeps the energy going with p
erfectly balanced brews. \nThe Vibe\nRetro pharmacy-soda-fountain meets mi

omfy booths\, + photogenic mill-house charm. Instagram-worthy but still to
tally cozy\, especially if you’re brunching on King Street. \nWhether yo
 u’re gap-yearing your hangover or just craving a top-tier weekend meal\,
Miller’s All Day hits the sweet spot. Stay light\, stay local\, stay li

DESCRIPTION:Spotted: Weekend Brunch at The Obstinate Daughter\nIf your dre
am brunch involves coastal vibes\, killer food\, + a dash of Southern char
m\, slide over to Sullivan’s Island this weekend for brunch at The Obsti
nate Daughter. Running every Saturday + Sunday from 10 AM to 3 PM\, this b
eloved local spot fuses Southern soul with European flair – think ricott
 a gnocchi\, fresh seafood\, flatbreads\, + wood-fired pizzas that’ll hav
e you rethinking your loyalty to bacon + eggs. \nChef Jacques Larson (yep\
, James Beard-nominated) is the mastermind behind the ever-changing menu\,
which includes hits like the OD Skillet loaded with chorizo and veggies\,
Sea Island cassoulet\, and peel-and-eat shrimp. And don’t even try to r
esist the cinnamon rolls. You can sip on beermosas\, sangria\, or a snappy
cocktail like the William Moultrie while soaking up those chill beach tow
 n vibes – no actual ocean view\, but you’re just a flip-flop stroll aw
ay from the sand. \nGood Vibes\, Better Bites\nThe setting? Rustic-nautica
 l meets polished-casual. Reclaimed wood beams\, maritime accents\, + a lai
d-back crowd give The Obstinate Daughter its unmistakable island-town char
 m. Reservations via Resy are your best bet\, especially for patio seating\
, but walk-ins can snag bar or lounge spots too. And if you need a sweet f
 inish\, pop downstairs to BeardCat’s for coffee + small-batch gelato. \n
Whether you’re fueling up post-beach walk or making brunch your main eve

DESCRIPTION:Blue Notes & Bagels: How New Orleans Jazz Inspired the Israeli
Sound\n\nComplimentary brunch is served at 9 a.m. and the lecture begins
at 10 a.m. This event is free and open to the public. \n\nSpeaker: Leonard
Stein\n\nLecture Description: Israel has a thriving jazz scene today\, bu
t the story of how jazz arrived and took root there is far less known. Leo
nard Stein traces that history\, exploring how the reception of American m
usic in Israel was shaped by the country's shifting demographics before an
d after 1948 – including successive waves of immigration from Eastern Eu
rope\, North Africa and the Middle East – as well as by the broader nati
onalist project of forging a distinctly Israeli cultural identity.\n\nAt t
he center of Stein's talk are two Jewish American musicians who immigrated
to Israel shortly after statehood and dedicated their lives to teaching a
nd spreading jazz throughout the country – through radio broadcasts\, le
ctures\, jam sessions\, performances and writing. At a time when American
records were scarce\, their efforts were foundational in cultivating the f
irst generation of Israeli jazz musicians and listeners.\n\nCentral to thi
s work was the task of explaining where jazz comes from. In doing so\, man
y Israelis encountered\, for the first time\, the African American experie
nce\, the musical roots of blues and spirituals and the cultural history o
f the American South. Stein's talk ultimately illuminates a surprising and
resonant bridge between Southern culture and Israeli society – one buil
 t through music.

e begins at 10 a.m. This event is free and open to the public. \n\nSpeaker
s: Maurice Samuels and Judge Richard Gergel\n\nLecture Description: Mauric

DESCRIPTION:The Foodways of the Western Sephardic Diaspora: From Medieval
Iberia to Charleston\n\nComplimentary brunch is served at 9 a.m. and the l
ecture begins at 10 a.m. This event is free and open to the public\n \n\nS
peaker: Hélène Jawhara Piñer\n\n \n\nLecture Description: This lecture
offers a scholarly analysis of Jewish culinary identity in medieval Iberia
\, situating food at the intersection of religion\, medicine\, politics an
d cultural exchange. Drawing on archival research and the earliest Iberian
cookbooks\, it examines how Jewish food practices developed within – an
d in dialogue with – Muslim and Christian culinary traditions. The lectu
re compares the thirteenth-century Kitāb al-ṭabīkh with 14-century coo
kbooks produced under Christian rule\, analyzing these texts as both culin
ary and dietary manuals shaped by religious law\, medical theory and socia
l hierarchy. Particular attention is given to the oldest extant Spanish co
okbook\, which preserves the earliest explicitly Jewish recipes\, revealin
g the Jewish contribution to Andalusian cuisine and shared culinary knowle
dge across confessional boundaries.\n\n \n\nThe talk further explores Jewi
sh and Muslim food consumption in the Kitāb al-ṭabīkh\, engages mediev
al medical discourse – especially the writings of Maimonides – and tra
ces the evolution of Sephardic foodways through Christian-era cookbooks\,
literature and Inquisition records. It highlights holiday foods as endurin
g markers of identity and continuity under conditions of persecution and f
orced conversion. The lecture concludes by examining contemporary Spain’
s engagement with Sephardic culinary heritage and current efforts toward r
 ecognition\, revival and cultural memory.
