DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Study of Slavery in Charleston welcomes Jas
on Young\, professor of history at the University of Michigan\, where he i
s also director of the Institute for the Humanities and Mary Fair Croushor
e Professor of the Humanities. His teaching and research cover 19th-centur
y United States history\, African American history and the African Diaspor
 a. He specializes in the history of art\, religion and folk culture devoti
ng special attention to the Palmetto State. Jason Young is the author of R
ituals of Resistance: African Atlantic Religion in Kongo and the Lowcountr
y Region of Georgia and South Carolina in the Era of Slavery\, an explorat
ion into the religious and ritual practices that linked West-Central Afric
a with the Lowcountry region. Jason is also well known in the museum world
. He co-curated Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield\, South Ca
rolina\, a touring exhibition that opened at the Metropolitan Museum (MET)
of New York before traveling to other prestigious museums. He also made s
ignificant contributions to the International African American Museum here
in Charleston. Young visits our campus to discuss his latest book\, The M
ask of Memory: White Racial Fantasy after the Civil War\, published this y
ear by the University of North Carolina Press. In this work\, Young explor
es the role of early 20th-century white writers\, artists and performers f
rom the cultural hub of Charleston in creating and disseminating a highly
sanitized view of slavery. His analysis reveals the power and persistence
of these myths even today and the way historical memory and our understand
ing of the past are formed and distorted.

DESCRIPTION:While not a term currently familiar to most\, deep mapping is
a rapidly growing field\, and one of the most unique ways to engage a comm
unity in creating detailed\, public-facing digital maps that integrate spa
tial\, historical\, cultural\, and environmental data to tell the full and
broader story of a place and its people. Over the last year and a half\,
a small group from Charleston has initiated this process for the Lowcountr
y\, working closely with Don Lafrenerie\, Director of the Community Deep M
apping Institute at Michigan Technological University\, and James Newhard\
, Director of the Center for Historical Landscapes. Join Don and James\, a
long with Doug Rivet\, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the Col
lege of Charleston\, and CLS Director of Development Jen Comer for a rivet
ing discussion about what has already been completed\, the insights gleane
d\, and what we’ll see in the next phase of the project. \nPurchase Tick

raphy & GIS\, Director of the Center for Geospatial Research and Technolog
y\, and Director of the Community Deep Mapping Institute at Michigan Techn
ological University.   He has led dozens of projects and published exten
sively on topics such GIS approaches to historic preservation\, community

additionally has led projects involving historical GIS\, spatial databases
\, and community-engaged approaches to documenting layered cultural landsc
apes. His current work with SHOC brings together deep mapping\, public his
tory\, and community-centered approaches to improve access to Charleston
’s dispersed historical records and to support descendant communities\,
preservation advocacy\, and more equitable understandings of place. \nAbou
t Doug Rivet \nDouglas Rivet is Assistant Professor of Political Science a
nd Director of the Urban and Regional Planner Certificate Program at the C
ollege of Charleston. As a geographer\, his work is grounded in urban geog

and natural systems shape urban spaces over time. Drawing on experience in
local government\, GIS\, property assessment\, and policy\, he brings app

DESCRIPTION:In exploring the integrated relationship between culture and d
emocracy\, we are honored to welcome special guest Lamar Alexander to join
Michael Reynolds for this season’s BOND STREET REIT Series. As a long-s
erving U.S. Senator\, Lamar leaves a legacy spanning politics\, education
leadership\, and public service that has shaped both education policy\, pu
blic spaces\, and community programs. As the 5th U.S. Secretary of Educati
on\, he championed the “America 2000” initiative and later advanced fe
deral legislation for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015 and th
e 2018 Education Next+1\, which expanded accountability to improve student
outcomes. Lamar Alexander’s career in education leadership —through f
ederal\, state\, and legislative roles—has had a lasting impact on Ameri
can schools and public institutions\, through infrastructure investment an
d public service priorities. \nPurchase Tickets HERE! \nAbout Lamar Alexan
der \nLamar Alexander has long been known as one of America’s most princ
ipled and effective statesmen. As US Senator\, Alexander shepherded major
laws that today govern K–12 education\, medical innovation\, and mainten
ance of our national parks. Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell
said\, “For eighteen years\, there was Lamar Alexander\, and there was t
he rest of us. He was hands-down one of the most brilliant\, most thoughtf
ul\, and most effective legislators any of us have ever seen.” As govern
or\, Alexander brought the auto industry to Tennessee and made it the firs
t state to pay teachers more for teaching well. He was chairman of the Sen
ate Republican Conference\, the nation’s governors\, and of President Re
agan’s “Commission on Americans Outdoors.” He served as US Education
Secretary and as a university president. \nAlexander was also known for c
ampaigning in a plaid shirt and performing on the piano with twenty-seven
symphonies and on the Grand Ol’ Opry. He graduated from Vanderbilt Unive
rsity and New York University Law School. He and his late wife Honey were
married for fifty-four years\, had four children and nine grandchildren. H
is parents were teachers. A seventh generation Tennessean\, Alexander live
s in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains near Maryville where he gr
ew up. This is his tenth book\, all written by the author himself. \nAbout
the Bond Street REIT Speaker Series \nOrchestrated by Founder and Chief E
xecutive Officer\, Michael D. Reynolds\, who passionately served as a mem
ber of the Board of Trustees and also Treasurer of the Charleston Library
Society\, the Bond Street REIT Speaker Series strives to honor the institu
tion’s cultural enrichment\, intellectual exploration\, and literary leg
acy through a series of lively discussions and thought-provoking lectures.
Bond Street is dedicated to preserving the Charleston Library Society’s
renowned collection and historical significance\, as an immensely valuabl
e repository of history in the South. Bond Street Real Estate Investment T
rust\, headquartered in Charleston\, is a private real estate investment t
rust uniquely invested in convenience retail centers across ten states in
the Southeast. \nIn 1831\, Alexis de Tocqueville toured America and visite
d Charleston in search of the special ingredient that made America’s dem
ocracy so powerful. What he discovered was that the glue that created comm
unity and civic discourse was its profoundly thriving cultural institution

DESCRIPTION:Join us for "The Carolina Parakeet and the Politics of Disappe
arance: Uncharismatic Extinction in North America from the College of Char
 leston’s Campus."\n\nBarry Stiefel\, professor in the College's Historic
Preservation and Community Planning Program\, examines the extinct Caroli
na parakeet – the only parrot species native to the eastern United State
s – as a case study for theorizing uncharismatic species\, extinction an
d environmental memory.\n\n \n\nUnlike the passenger pigeon or the America
n bison\, the Carolina parakeet has not become a canonical symbol of loss\
, restraint or ecological catastrophe. Instead\, it occupies a marginal po
sition in both scholarly and popular narratives – a species that disappe
ared without securing lasting moral or historiographic attention.\n\n \n\n
