DESCRIPTION:On View August 22\, 2026 – December 13\, 2026\nWhat relevan
ce does portrait photography carry today? \nThis exhibition features photo
graphy works by six modern and contemporary artists of African descent\, m
 ade between 1963 and 2024\, that explore culture\, identity\, memory\, and
modern life. On loan from the Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana Universit
y\, it is the first exhibition of its kind at the Stanley Museum of Art\,
reimagining the notion of an archive to include personal\, familial\, and
community collections depicting the past. \nSpanning the colonial and inde
pendence periods in Africa\, historic portraits from public archives often
depict family and friends and thus hold deeply personal significance. The
exhibition draws on strengths in the Eskenazi Museum’s collection of Ma
lick Sidibé’s and Tijani Sitou’s photography from the mid- to late tw
entieth century. Sidibé and Sitou became well known within their respecti
ve communities in Bamako and Mopti\, both in Mali. Sidibé also garnered g
lobal recognition for his portraits of Malians following political indepen
dence from France in 1960\, earning his fame as one of the most celebrated
photographers from the African continent. \nPortraiture & Archives in Afr
ican Photography considers the significance of Sidibé’s and Sitou’s
work today. It also traces new directions in portrait photography by conte
mporary artists Zohra Opoku\, Ibrahima Thiam\, Hassan Hajjaj\, and Zanele
Muholi who engage with portraiture\, archives\, and use photography alongs
ide other media like textiles and painting. These six artists work in diff
erent parts of Africa— including Ghana\, Senegal\, Mali\, Morocco\, and
 South Africa—and the African diaspora. Today\, Opoku\, Thiam\, Hajjaj\,
and Muholi also actively participate in the global art world by exhibiting
in international platforms that connect their practices to larger dialogu
es about photography and portraiture. This exhibition offers a new take on
Sidibé’s and Sitou’s legacy with Thiam—as both artist and co-curat
or— re-inventing their images and reinscribing them with new meaning tod
ay. \nA Collaborative Exhibition\n\n\n\nUntitled work from the Portraits
 “Vintage” series\, 2017. Inkjet print on Hahnemühle paper. 39 11/16 x
31 1/4 inches. Loan from the Eskenazi Museum of Art\, 2024.223. Ibrahima
Thiam (Senegalese\, 1976—)\nContemporary artist Ibrahima Thiam guest cur
ated this exhibition with Eskenazi Museum curator Allison Martino and Indi
ana University faculty Beth Buggenhagen. This was the first time that the
Eskenazi Museum invited an artist to serve as an exhibition co-curator. Th
rough this collaborative process\, Thiam sought to reinvent the portraitur
e tradition in Africa to provide renewed appreciation for African photogra
phic archives. This tradition encompasses the work of renowned photographe
rs such as Malick Sidibé and Tijani Sitou\, as well as photographs dating
back to the arrival of the camera in Saint-Louis\, Senegal\, in 1862. The
curators prioritize Thiam’s vision to reimagine African photographic ar
chives by placing communities and families\, as they pictured themselves\,
at the center. \nThiam and Buggenhagen began working together in Senegal
in 2016\, and Thiam first visited Indiana University in 2019 to participat
e in a roundtable about his work. He returned in the summer of 2024 for a
residency at the Eskenazi Museum of Art to study Sidibé’s and Sitou’s
photography and to work on curating the exhibition. Stanley Museum of Art
curator Cory Gundlach met Thiam at Dakar in 2022. After acquiring Thiam
’s work for the Stanley Museum of Art in 2023\, he began planning with T
hiam and Martino to bring this exhibition to Iowa. Thiam\, Buggenhagen\, a
nd Martino worked together to select photographs for the exhibition at Ind
iana. The exhibition at Iowa also includes Gundlach’s recent acquisition
of work by Hassan Hajjaj and Zanele Muholi. Thiam collaborated on exhibit
ion design with staff at the Stanley and Eskenazi museums\, where he also
served as curator-in-residence. His vision drove the exhibition narrative\
, foregrounding the perspective of a contemporary photographer. \n \n\n\n\

rapher Tijani Sitou\, Malick Sitou allowed the reproduction of his father

DESCRIPTION:A National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere \n \n\n\n\n
 \nby Scott Carter\nSeptember 10 – 27\, 2026\nLondon\, 1608. William Shak
espeare finds himself getting older and striving to retain his relevances
 – all while placating his fellow actors\, meeting the king’s demands\,
and dodging the plague. It will take a stroke of genius to turn this chao
s into the last great movement in the Bard’s writing: the Romance plays.
Written by Emmy-winning producer and playwright Scott Carter\, whose prev

Count Leo Tolstoy: Discord was produced by Riverside in 2019. I\, Will:

DESCRIPTION:Hailing from Waterloo\, Iowa\, Katie and the Honky Tonks are a
four-piece original honky tonk band owing its sound to 1960s Nashville. T
heir songs lean heavy on real stories\, catchy hooks\, and rhythms built f
or crowded dance floors. Fronted by Katie Sires on vocals and rhythm guita
r\, with Jesse Cotton on lead guitar\, Johnny Love on bass\, and Luke Sire
s on drums\, they were named 2025 Iowa Music Awards Country Artist of the
Year\, and were considered for a Grammy after releasing their debut album\
, Ain’t No Shame. Proof that honky tonk is still here and very much aliv
 e. \nTheir debut album\, Ain’t No Shame\, OUT NOW builds on the success
 of their 2024 EP\, Two-Steppin’ in the Shower\, which solidified their p
lace in the Midwest country music scene. The EP earned widespread recognit
ion\, with Iowa Public Radio saying\, “The EP sounds more like Nashville
1964\, not Nashville 2024.” Lonesome Highway\, in a review of “Ain’
t No Shame’ says\, “Katie and the Honky Tonks join the ever-growing ca
non of women like Summer Dean\, Emily Nenni\, Sarah Gayle Meech and Kimmi
Bitter\, to name but a few\, that are representing genuine honky tonk musi
 c.” \nhttps://www.katieandthehonkytonks.net/ \n\nBig Begonias took root
in 2020\, creating transcendental folk and honky tonk music\, featuring or
iginal songs by Gabrielle Kouri. Gabrielle (Awful Purdies) plays guitar\,
banjo\, and sings. George Spielbauer (Cedar County Cobras) plays various
guitars. Bass guitarist Dave “Chief” Lumberg (Shoe Money\, Mayflies) a
nd drummer Daniel Miller (Lake of Wire\, Kleenexgirlwonder) hold down the
 groove. \nhttps://bigbegonias.bandcamp.com/ \n\nAlex Dupree is a songwrite
r based in Austin\, TX. He released his first album in 2005\, a piece of s
hambolic bedroom folk made with a group of friends called the Trapdoor Ban
 d. NPR called it “both poetic and political.” Over the course of three
LPs with this group\, and one under the pseudonym Idyl\, Alex would root
himself firmly but idiosyncratically in the traditions of American songwri
ting. “Sounds continue to unfold in ways that are timeless\,” one revi
ewer wrote for Yahoo! Music’s Top 100 Albums of 2007\, “Dupree just ne
eded to discover them and dust them off.” During this time\, he was also
recording and touring extensively with Zookeeper\, the folk-rock zag of e
mo pioneer Chris Simpson (Mineral). \nIn 2013\, Alex moved to Los Angeles
to study poetry\, but songs were never far from his mind. He still wrote a
nd performed with cosmic country bands Mister Paradise and Dawn & Dupree\,
leaning into a Willie Nelson-tinged croon for the bar crowd. He returned\
, more or less\, to his own voice for 2017’s You Winsome\, You Lonesome
\, put out on cassette by Keeled Scales. A full release with the label nev
er materialized\, and after some time floating between odd writing gigs\,
he returned to Austin. \nAlong the way he met Phoenix-based producer Micha
el Krassner (Boxhead Ensemble\, Simon Joyner\, Califone). Their collabora
tion resulted in the 2022 album Thieves. If You Winsome\, You Lonesome
is a suite of country storytelling (seen through the hazy marine layer of
indie rock)\, then Thieves has narrative folk ballads at its heart. In t
he words of a UK reviewer\, Alex is “a magician pulling the strings\, so
metimes a director setting the scenes” for these campfire stories of “
caves and gangsters\, bodies and bad guys\, untrustworthy divas and the se
arch for true love.” \nYou Winsome\, You Lonesome got a belated vinyl p
ressing in 2024\, commemorated by a 22-date tour of Texas. Alex’s second
album with Michael Krassner\, Talking to the Dog\, is scheduled for rel
 ease in 2026. \nhttps://alexdupree.com/
