DESCRIPTION:September’s selection — The Power of the Powerless\, by V
áclav Havel \nAs America commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signin
g of the Declaration of Independence and what would have been Václav Have
l’s 90th birthday\, NCSML is proud to announce the unveiling and dedicat
ion of “Havel’s Place” on the campus of the National Czech & Slovak
 Museum & Library on Friday\, September 18 at 5 p.m. to kickoff BrewNost. T
he first president of the Czech Republic was a supporter of NCSML and work
ed to strengthen the relationships between the Czech Republic and the U.S.
\nIt is fitting that the September book club selection is a poignant work
from Václav Havel. \nThe Power of the Powerless (Czech: Moc bezmocných)
is an expansive political essay written in October 1978 by the Czech dram
atist\, political dissident and later politician\, Václav Havel. The essa
y dissects the nature of the communist regime of the time\, life within su
ch a regime and how by their very nature such regimes can create dissident
s of ordinary citizens. The essay goes on to discuss ideas and possible ac
tions by loose communities of individuals linked by a common cause\, such
as Charter 77. Officially suppressed\, the essay was circulated in samizda
t form and translated into multiple languages. It became a manifesto for d
issent in Czechoslovakia\, Poland and other communist regimes. \nAbout the
Book Club Moderator: \nSteve Pederson is an UW Eau Claire graduate with a
history major and a Scandinavian studies minor. He taught U.S. history\,

DESCRIPTION:Twelve teams will learn how to curl and will compete the same
day in Curl Jam 2026\, organized and sponsored by  Cedar Rapids Curling!
  \nCurling is a sport for everyone…\n– It’s unique!\n– It’s incl
 usive!\n– It’s social!\n– It’s fun!\n– And… Funds raised will
support The Arc of East Central Iowa! \nTeam Registration Is Open!\n12 Tea
ms will Participate – Space is limited so register early!\n4 or 5 Member
 s per Team   (Teams of 5 will rotate players.)\nRegistration Fee – $1\,
000 per Team \n \nOverview:\nThe Cedar Rapids Curling Club provides all th
e necessary curling equipment. After a quick off-ice discussion about the
basics of curling and safety\, teams will head onto the ice for a clinic l
ed by experienced Cedar Rapids Curling coaches to learn how to throw and s
weep the stone. We then will proceed to a three-round\, mini-game tourname
nt. Don’t worry\, the coaches will be with you all the way\, discussing
strategy and answering all your questions. \nClothing: The air temperature
in the arena usually is in the 40s (but no wind). Dress in warm\, loose-f
itting clothing (tight jeans will hinder movement). Some people also start
with light gloves/mittens and a hat. Most people start shedding layers on
ce they start a game. \nFootwear: No skates! You just need a pair of clean
rubber soled athletic shoes (no heels\, open toed shoes\, dress shoes\, b
 oots\, slippers\, loafers\, or any footwear with a hard sole). \nSense of
Humor: Mandatory! Consider a fun team name also. \nPhysical Requirements:
If you can survive Iowa winters\, you can curl! We will find a way for any
interested person who can safely be on the ice to participate when their
physical abilities do not allow for typical curling styles and techniques.
We have special stone delivery devices for those who may not be able to c
omfortably crouch down to deliver (throw) stones and we can accommodate in
dividuals with more significant physical limitations. Contact us with ques
tions about your particular circumstances if you have concerns\; we almost
certainly will be able to accommodate. \nRelease & Waiver: Each participa
nt is required to sign the event’s Release and Waiver before being able
to participant. Here is the release and waiver to review. \n  \nIf you ha
ve any questions please contact Jenny Bosking at jbosking@arceci.org or 31
 9-893-6935.
