DESCRIPTION:Forty years of circusing not out and Cardiff company NoFit Sta
te show few signs of flagging. Their latest production\, Carnation\, opene
d in Porthcawl back in April and has since toured to Brighton\, Bristol\,
Galway and Carmarthen\, returning to base camp this month for 17 performan
ces in 17 days. (Saturdays feature both matinees and evening shows\; on Su
ndays it’s at 3pm only\; Mondays and Tuesdays are their days off.) NoFit
State specialise in circus which is ‘about things’\, and in the case
of Carnation they call that “hope in rebellion”. The title is a refere
nce to the symbol adopted by the Italian Socialist Party in the late 1970s
\; Firenza Guidi\, director of this show and multiple previous NoFit State
productions since the mid-00s\, was a student in Milan at the time. Much
of the symbolism which pops up over Carnation’s two-act\, two-hour runti
me is more overt than this\, by previous reviewers’ accounts. If the com
pany are not exactly trad circus performers\, the direction and choreograp
hy are in thrall to that history\, and you can expect to be thrilled by hi
gh-wire and trapeze acts\, clowning and suchlike. There’s also live musi
c and a sequence involving a slinky which seems to have especially impress
ed many attendees on shows earlier this year. Tickets: £14-£40.

DESCRIPTION:Consider the real-life Operation Mincemeat – a World War II
British intelligence deception operation in which the corpse of a tramp wa
s used to disguise the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily – and you would n
ever expect a riotous musical comedy\, especially one that wins Best New M
usical at the 2024 Olivier Awards. After huge success in London\, though\
, it’s on a UK tour (a measure of its success is that it’s simultaneou
sly playing on Broadway {and} touring North America\, Australia and China)
\, with a Cardiff run this month promptly followed by a Swansea one. The p
lot of the musical is based on a true story you just couldn’t make up. A
deceased man’s body became a red herring\, given the false identity of
Major William Martin with his pockets holding documents which seemed to co
rroborate this. A photo of his (imagined) fiancée sat next to equally fic
tional love letters\, in fact written by MI5 secretary Hester Leggatt. Th
e false information found its way into enemy hands\, as intended\, and in
doing so altered the course of the war. The corpse’s real identity – G
lyndwr Michael\, a homeless man from Aberbargoed – was kept secret until
1996. Such a story doesn’t seem an obvious one for a musical comedy tro
upe known as SplitLip to adapt for their debut production – let alone wi
th a scene in which the German army perform a boyband style musical number
. It just doesn’t sound like it should work\, yet written and produced w
ith historical reverence Operation Mincemeat has obviously become a succes
 s. Tickets: £33-£67. words CHRIS WILLIAMS

The second event of Diwylliant Cymru is also their first grime/alternative

equal fervour. Alternative grime MC Fruitb0y hails the family and culture
of his stomping ground – Talgarth – blending rugged beats with an outl

DESCRIPTION:The pathway to becoming a ‘public historian’ undoubtedly h
as innumerable complicating factors\, but one neat trick is to find an acc
essible way to relate heavy\, often bloody information. Be lighthearted wi
th it but\, you know\, not too much. David Olusoga\, who’s maintained a
busy schedule on our TVs since the mid-2010s\, has done this about as well
as anyone\, while most often sifting through the wreckage of empire\, col
onialism and slavery. This talk is titled The Global History Of The Britis
h Cup Of Tea and that history starts from the late 17th century and contin
ues today\, incorporating multiple continents and conflicts. The latest in
Olusoga’s History’s Missing Chapters lecture series\, the event will
also feature a Q&A and book signing.

DESCRIPTION:Hot on the heels of a biographical cabaret tour\, Cardiff burl
esque icon Foo Foo Labelle and Cardiff Cabaret Club presents Burlesque…
The Real Deal. A regular in Wales Millennium Centre’s Cabaret space\, it
s title is no doubt a tongue-in-cheek nod to Burlesque – the musical ada
ption of the 2010 film\, playing in the main auditorium at the start of th
is month. And indeed\, with CCC you get the real thing\, not the Hollywood
version of the form. Appropriately for the art of tease\, the lineup wasn
’t immediately announced\, but described as “incredible international
headliners” on the event page. Since then\, the performers have been int
roduced via the Cardiff Cabaret Club Instagram. Alongside host Labelle an
 d her Cabaret Club Troupe\, there’s London’s Aya L’Storm\, Ruby Rosa
lie – also based in London\, but a Welsh pinup\, who started with this v
ery club – international male burlesque performer Johnny O\, no strange
r to these bills Ana Kiss\, and “high energy-tomfoolery” from Rudy Jee
