DESCRIPTION:Consider the real-life Operation Mincemeat – a World War II
British intelligence deception operation in which the corpse of a tramp wa
s used to disguise the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily – and you would n
ever expect a riotous musical comedy\, especially one that wins Best New M
usical at the 2024 Olivier Awards. After huge success in London\, though\
, it’s on a UK tour (a measure of its success is that it’s simultaneou
sly playing on Broadway {and} touring North America\, Australia and China)
\, with a Cardiff run this month promptly followed by a Swansea one. The p
lot of the musical is based on a true story you just couldn’t make up. A
deceased man’s body became a red herring\, given the false identity of
Major William Martin with his pockets holding documents which seemed to co
rroborate this. A photo of his (imagined) fiancée sat next to equally fic
tional love letters\, in fact written by MI5 secretary Hester Leggatt. Th
e false information found its way into enemy hands\, as intended\, and in
doing so altered the course of the war. The corpse’s real identity – G
lyndwr Michael\, a homeless man from Aberbargoed – was kept secret until
1996. Such a story doesn’t seem an obvious one for a musical comedy tro
upe known as SplitLip to adapt for their debut production – let alone wi
th a scene in which the German army perform a boyband style musical number
. It just doesn’t sound like it should work\, yet written and produced w
ith historical reverence Operation Mincemeat has obviously become a succes
 s. Tickets: £33-£67. words CHRIS WILLIAMS

DESCRIPTION:Do you Brecon you’re ready for this? Because you better be!
The second event of Diwylliant Cymru is also their first grime/alternative
rap function in this area of Wales\, bringing a distinctly Welsh voice to
the town’s music scene. An allstar lineup of local artists is expected\
, praising homegrown Welsh talents from the capital and beyond as Welsh gr
ime and rap takes centre stage at Brecon’s Foundry. Headlining the nigh
t are two MCs from mid-Wales\, set to brandish their Breconian roots with
equal fervour. Alternative grime MC Fruitb0y hails the family and culture
of his stomping ground – Talgarth – blending rugged beats with an outl
ook forged in a Bannau Brycheiniog council estate. Alongside him\, D-Man S
hikan (from Llangors in the Black Mountains) is boosting matters with a st
rong energy: expect heavy bars and dirty beats intertwined with brilliant
humour. Join the celebration of Welsh hip-hop and the artists that are pu
shing it forward. Tickets: £7.50/£5 early bird. words JEMIMA LAKE

DESCRIPTION:New jazzy ensemble founded and headed up by guitarist James Ch
adwick\, with drummer Liz Exell\, keyboard player Mark Sambell and bassist
Aidan Thorne joining him. The concept is jazz arrangement of 60s pop hits
\, with the group who sang about a walrus once or twice getting special at
tention. The Beatles! I’m talking about the Beatles.
