DESCRIPTION:The Niagara Frontier Growers Co-operative Market\, Inc. was bo
rn in October 1930. The objectives of the co-op were to promote\, foster a
nd encourage the intelligent and orderly marketing of agricultural product
s between producer and consumer. The co-op was also formed to make the dis
tribution of agricultural products between producer and consumer as direct
and efficient possible. \nNiagara Frontier Growers leased the land from t
he railroad until the 1950’s when it then purchased the land. Over the y
ears \, the Market became known as the Clinton-Bailey Farmers Market and h
as become a vital link in Western New York’s food distribution. \nOver t
he years\, many Western New York farmers and growers have brought some of
the finest locally grown products to the Market for distribution. Some far
mers traveled more than 2 hours to sell their goods at the Market. In the
early years of the Market many of the farmers would transport their goods
by horse and buggy! \nToday\, the location of the Clinton-Bailey Farmers M
arket is central within the growing region and central within the “food
distribution hub” of the City of Buffalo. Hundreds of thousands of custo
mers pass through the Market each year to purchase fresh locally grown goo
ds direct from the farmer insuring healthy eating and savings to the end c
onsumer. \nThe Market has also become a desired destination for those look
ing to purchase flowers\, vegetable plants\, herbs\, shrubs and Christmas
Trees. Many wholesale buyers include major grocers\, institutions\, neighb
orhood markets\, restaurants\, caterers\, garden centers and other farm ma
rket stands that come to the Market every Tuesday\, Thursday and Saturday
 morning as early as 4:00 AM. \nCLINTON BAILEY MARKET\n1443 – 1517 Clinto

  Banisadr.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert and Elisabeth Wilmers Building\n\nImita
tion is not inspiration\, and inspiration only can give birth to a work of
art.\n—Albert Pinkham Ryder\n\nAli Banisadr merges the compositional el
ements of landscape painting with abstract mark-making to create an altoge
ther new form of figuration. The resulting compositions are a carefully co
mposed bedlam of forms that suggest but ultimately deny any specific narra
tive. Variously reminiscent of gardens of Eden\, the seasonal genre pictur
es of Flemish Renaissance painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder\, and Boschian
depictions of Hell\, Banisadr’s contemporary abstractions call upon the
history of painting. The title of the exhibition\, borrowed from Albert Pi
nkham Ryder’s enigmatic painting\, The Temple of the Mind\, serves as a
conceptual framework for the project\, suggesting a space where perception
\, memory\, and imagination converge. While the Romantic painter was admir
 ed for his pioneering\, semi-abstract style\, for Banisadr\, Ryder holds a
space for contemplation amid rising uncertainties. \nAli Banisadr (Americ
 an\, born Iran\, 1976). Return to Mother\, 2022. Oil on linen. 82 x 180 in
ches (208.28 x 457.2 cm). © Ali Banisadr.\nGiven his deep interest in art
history\, the Buffalo AKG has invited Banisadr to participate in the firs
t-ever artist collection intervention. In addition to the installation in
the Hemicycle Gallery\, a focused selection of Banisadr’s work will be i
nstalled throughout the Robert and Elisabeth Wilmers Building\, among the
dreamlike imaginings of the Surrealists and the unbridled energy of the Ab
stract Expressionists. \nBanisadr reaches across time to draw on a wide ra
nge of influences. From art\, history\, literature\, and mythology to musi
c\, film\, and technology\, he thinks of such sources as guiding his hand
rather than driving his imagery\, and the powerful microcosms he creates a
re uniquely his own. Within these layered compositions\, subtle references
to current events and the human condition—conflict\, migration\, and co
llective uncertainty—emerge and dissolve within the flux of his painterl
y language. Originating from one spontaneous moment to the next\, hidden f
igures and beguiling narratives reveal themselves to those who slow down i
n the present moment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAli Banisadr (American
 \, born Iran\, 1976). The Witness\, 2025. Oil on linen. 28 x 36 inches (71
 .12 x 91.44 cm). © Ali Banisadr.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBanisadr’s wo
rks often evoke the natural world\, its shifting terrains and elemental fo
rces\, while also suggesting cosmological dimensions that extend beyond th
e visible. Furthermore\, the artist’s unusual experience as a synesthete
—a blending of the senses—also informs his practice. Over the years\,
he has learned to allow his unique perceptions to guide his process\, lean
ing into the ways that color evokes specific sounds of harmony or discord.

inches (29.21 x 20.64 cm). Collection Buffalo AKG Art Museum. Gift of Fred
eric P. Norton\, 1999 (P1999:6.209).\nThe presentation in the Hemicycle Ga
llery will also feature an installation that delves deeply into the artist
’s influences and process through materials from his studio and an artis
t-curated selection of works from the museum’s collection. From Andō Hi
roshige’s evocative woodcuts and Francisco de Goya’s intense\, sometim
es nightmarish\, depictions of violence and superstition to the artist’s
sketchbooks and other visual cues\, visitors are invited to immerse thems
elves in Banisadr’s curious\, fantastical world. \nThe exhibition will b
e accompanied by an audio journey voiced by Banisadr and will debut a new
etching created with the team at Mirabo Press in Buffalo\, New York. A sho
rt-documentary film on the artist is also in development. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

–2005) had a connection to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (now the Buffa
lo AKG Art Museum) that spanned more than forty years\, from speaking to a
rtist collaborations. His first engagement with the museum was in March 1
965\, when he took part in the Poetry Today symposium for The Buffalo Fes
tival of the Arts Today. The sixteen-day event attracted more than 300\,00
0 guests and received nationwide acclaim. During the symposium\, Creeley s
tated\, “Whatever provokes in me this response to the innate rhythm of a
poem\, whatever it is\, one singly follows one’s own answer\,” expres
sing his deeply felt and responsive style. \nThe poet collaborated with so
me of the most celebrated contemporary artists\, forming lasting relations
hips with them before the actual “work” took place. Artist Alex Katz\,
a collaborator on Edges\, stated\, “Working with Bob makes me feel brig
ht.” In May 1972\, Marisol wrote a letter to Creeley after receiving the
text for Presences: A Text for Marisol (1976)\, “It is really amazing h
ow you could do something so close to me from seeing me so few times.” C
reeley mirrored Marisol’s sculptural process in his prose\, creating wha
t he called an “active complement.” \n“All I ever wanted was a place
\,” Creeley writes\, in a 1988 collaboration with artists Robert Therrie
n and Michel Butor. The poet arrived in Buffalo in 1966\, teaching at the
University at Buffalo for more than thirty years. He was the inspiration
behind Just Buffalo Literary Center and went on to co-found UB’s Poeti
cs Program. In his later years\, he was often called “the man in Black R
ock.” On this centennial of his birth\, we celebrate the indelible mark
Creeley made on the literary and artistic life of this place. \n\n\n\n\n\n

Politics of the Obvious is one of the celebrated Icelandic artist’s mos
t ambitious ever exhibitions in the United States and half of the works ar
e making their American museum debut at the Buffalo AKG. The exhibition ce
nters on a series of deceptively simple refrains\, clichés\, and truisms.
In six immersive installations made over more than two decades\, Kjartans
son transforms such familiar phrases or gestures into experiences that bec
ome altogether strange\, provocative\, and powerfully moving. \n\n\n\n\n\n

ouisiana Museum of Modern Art. Photo: Louisiana Museum of Modern Art/Poul
 Buchard\n\n\n\n\n\nPrevious slideNext slide\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the
video Scenes from Western Culture (The Boat) (2015)\, for example\, an ele
gantly dressed couple repeatedly and languidly sets off into a tranquil se
a\; the man stays the same while the woman seems to keep changing. Their e
vident wealth and ease\, coupled with the impossible beauty of their setti
ng\, constitute the stuff of glossy travel brochures\, the carefully const
ructed advertising tropes that wallpaper an office worker’s imaginary. S
uch an unachievably perfect two weeks’ vacation was\, of course\, a rewa
rd designed to help keep that same worker productive during the other fift
y weeks of the year. Devoid of drama or incident\, Kjartansson’s The Boa
tembodies the deep-rooted fantasy that leisure (enjoyed through the brief
reprieve of a vacation or more durably attained through wealth) will cure
what ails us. It illustrates a fiction that is as inherent to modernity as
our increasingly digital and monitored working lives. \nThe nearby live p
erformance Bangemand / Scaredman (2023) offers a stark counterpoint to the
holidaymakers in The Boat. Every day during the museum’s open hours\, a
man in a tuxedo inches along a narrow ledge high in a gallery\, his body
pressed anxiously against the wall. The scenario recalls cinematic tropes
—from silent-era physical comedy to midcentury thrillers such as Vertigo
(1958)—yet Kjartansson strips the scene of narrative resolution. A clea
n-cut\, suited figure is typically a sign of masculine authority\, composu
re\, and control\; in Scaredman\, he instead appears beset by unseen and u
ndefined forces. The performance evokes a familiar cultural script in whic
h masculinity is cast as under siege\, transforming a familiar archetype i
nto a meditation on fear\, spectacle\, and the troubling logic that power
sustains itself by staging its own vulnerability. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
\n\nRagnar Kjartansson (Icelandic\, born 1976). Scenes from Western Cultur
e\, The Boat (Stephan Stephensen\, Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir and Gyða
 Valtýsdóttir)\, 2015. Single-channel video. Running time: 2 hours\, 36 m
inutes. Courtesy of the artist\, Luhring Augustine\, New York\, and i8 Gal
 lery\, Reykjavik\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn an interview\, Kjartansson ha
s reflected on the importance of holding opposing emotional registers in p
lace: “There is always this balance between irony and sincerity. I think
that’s where things become interesting.” This sensibility runs throug
hout the works in Politics of the Obvious. In Me and My Mother (2000–25)
 \, for example\, a repeated\, confrontational act between mother and son b
ecomes a tender record of time passing. In No Tomorrow (2017)\, a group of
performers with guitars take up historic entertainment repertoires while
eventually exposing their artifice\, seeming to dance around the fleeting
nature of desire itself. The Visitors (2012) is one of the most beloved ar
tworks of the twenty-first century. In the virtuosic installation\, musici
ans each play alone in separate rooms of a decaying mansion in upstate New
York. Their voices carry through walls\, gradually enfolding a shared ref
rain and transforming the individual into a temporary collective. Sunday W
ithout Love is a tableau vivant rooted in traditions ranging from romantic
balladry to landscape painting that builds into a sustained meditation on
loss. \nKjartansson stands in wonder at the world’s contradictions. “
I am just totally in awe of the world and all its mystical beauty and myst
ical violence\,” he has affirmed. Seen together\, the works in Politics
of the Obvious describe a world in which aspiration and anxiety are tightl
 y bound\, with the quest for stability\, beauty\, and rest shadowed by a p
ersistent sense of precarity. By confronting familiar images throughout th
 e exhibition—of love\, masculinity\, leisure\, and power—Kjartansson r
eveals their underlying instability and invites us to dwell in what often
remains hidden in plain sight. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\

oto: Thomas Müller \nNatvar Bhavsar: Free Yourself surveys fifty years o
f the artist’s expressive abstractions\, inviting viewers to meditate on
the power of pure color. Simultaneously presented at the Buffalo AKG Art
Museum and the University at Buffalo Art Galleries\, the exhibitions respe
ctively feature works on paper and monumental paintings spanning each deca
de of his career. This exhibition also celebrates the debut of the AKG’s
  two acquisitions by the artist RITI-YAA (1969) and KE-RAA (1971). \nBhavs
ar’s unique physical process centers on tiny particles of pure\, dry pig
ment. He begins by soaking the entire canvas in a clear acrylic binder\, t
hen sifts or brushes pigment through handmade tools and fine mesh screens\
, building up to eighty sealed layers. Air currents\, breath\, and the rhy
thm of his body as he maneuvers around the surface help shape the final im
age—a carefully controlled dance that produces textured\, smoky surfaces
with subtle shifts in color and tone. As Bhavsar describes: \n\n“When I
enter my studio\, everything disappears. It’s like I’ve entered anoth
er world. I experience Nirvana. It’s an incredible gift in which I disap
 pear\, the studio itself disappears\, New York disappears.”\n\n  \nNatv
 ar Bhavsar (American\, born India\, 1934). VAROONA II\, 1988. Painting on
 paper\, dry pigment\, and acrylic medium on rag paper. 49 x 39 inches (125
  x 99 cm). © 2026 Natvar Bhavsar / Artists Rights Society (ARS)\, New Yor
 k. Image courtesy of the artist. \nExamined up close\, his dappled surfac
es are palpable\; from a distance\, the color fields float and become atmo
spheric. Some paintings burst with energy\, while others suggest a boundle
ss continuum of color. Unlike other Abstract Expressionists\, who approach
ed the sublime through solemnity\, Bhavsar’s path is ecstatic and celebr
atory and rooted in his Indian heritage. His work invokes Holi\, the Hindu
Spring festival in which revelers douse one another in powdered colors to
celebrate the divine love of Radha and Krishna. Later works introducing c
urlicues draw on rangoli—decorative floor patterns of colored powder mad
e during Diwali\, the festival of light. \nBhavsar’s meditative practice
results in an intensely personal experience that invites endless free ass
ociation—whether you find yourself peering through a microscope\, wander
ing a Holi celebration\, or gazing from the Hubble telescope is left entir
ely to you. \n  \n  \n  \n\nNatvar Bhavsar: Free Yourself is organized
by the Buffalo AKG Art Museum and the University at Buffalo Art Galleries.
Its presentation in Buffalo is organized by Katie O’Hara\, Assistant Cu

DESCRIPTION:Opening reception for the exhibition “I’ve Got Next” fea
turing work by Kurt Treeby\, on view September 18 through October 30\, 202
 6. \n  \n____________ \n  \n  \nFor this exhibition\, Buffalo artist Ku
rt Treeby will create three fully playable video games based on art histor
ical themes. Adopting a retro style derived from consoles such as the Atar
i 2600 or Nintendo Entertainment System\, the project will include the gam
es Constantin Brancusi’s Endless Column\, Picasso’s War\, and Un Chien
Andalou. \nThese new games draw on art historical themes in the same mann
er as Treeby’s previous works in fiber\, utilizing imagery appropriated
from pre-existing paintings and sculptures. In his fiber pieces\, the work
s resolve naturally into a pixelated form through crochet or cross stitch.
In order to bridge this visual connection from fiber to pixels\, Treeby t
aught himself Game Maker Studio in order to produce work that is literally
playable and not merely referential toward the form. \nWhile video games
are one of the largest and most lucrative realms of the entertainment indu
stry\, they remain\, even after many decades of development\, targets of c
ensure and criticism — they exalt violence\, they promote anti-social be
havior\, they are gigantic time sinks\, they contribute little to culture\
, and so on. The truth is more complex — the sorts of unique experiences
created within games are not at all dissimilar from the effects produced
by great works of art (because that’s what they can be). They are filled
with creative obstacles and demand creative solutions. They engage mechan
isms of critical thinking. They are fueled by imagination. And the spontan
eous experiences they generate — a combination of their design and how t
he player plays — can frequently land in a sublime place. \nIn these way
s\, we discover rapidly that they are no dissimilar from that which we mor
 e commonly call art.

 sten’s classic novel\, where a confident matchmaker’s meddling spirals
into comic chaos. \nFriendship\, folly and the messy business of love. \n
Emma Woodhouse is clever\, educated\, energetic… and in imminent danger
of going mad with idleness. In a time when respectable ladies are expected
to sit quietly at home\, she desperately needs a project—and prides her
self on matchmaking\, much to the chagrin of her friend Mr. Knightley. But
where Emma aims her attention\, tangled hearts and screwball comedy follo
ws… A fresh feminist take on a treasured classic\, this Emma breaks down
convention\, expectation\, and even the fourth wall with vibrant comic fl
 air—leading audiences “forward\, onward\, and upward!” \n\n\n\n\n\nA

DESCRIPTION:Buffalo United Artists is proud to present the Western New Yor
k Premiere of the rarely seen landmark 1970s queer musical comedy Gulp! T
he Gay Beach Musical. \nSet on the beach at Coney Island on Gay Liberation
Day – June 28th\, the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Our story fol
lows a closeted lifeguard whose life is saved by five unabashedly eccentri
 c characters: his soon-to be lover\, a wacky orthodox priest\, a ditzy jou
 rnalist\, a hunky construction worker\, and a show queen from Shirley’s
Temple on Flatbush Avenue. \nTheir drives\, dreams\, pasts and futures col
lide in a riot of coincidences\, filled with music\, romance and off-the-w
all humor. \nBuffalo United Artists production of Gulp! The Gay Beach Mus
ical is more than a revival\, it is an act of preservation. As one of the
earliest examples of queer musicals in the history of the American musica
l\, Gulp! predates landmark works such as La Cage aux Folles\, Rent\,
and Fun Home\, yet it has remained largely forgotten. \nWith no commercia
l cast recording and decades since its last full production\, this groundb
reaking work has been at risk of disappearing from our theatrical legacy.
Our production team has worked to restore the musical as faithfully as pos
sible\, while introducing it to a new generation of audiences. By honoring
its creators and preserving their artistic vision\, we hope to secure Gu
lp! its rightful place in the canon of influential queer musicals and ens
ure that its story continues to live far beyond Buffalo. \n\nSTARRING\n\n

DESCRIPTION:WNY native James Gedeon performs the music of James Taylor in
this special tribute event. \nGedeon describes the concert as an intimate
acoustic performance that brings audiences closer to the heart of Taylor
’s timeless songs. With a deep reverence for the music\, Gedeon presents
each piece in its purest form\, capturing not only the warmth and honesty
of Taylor’s vocal delivery but also the intricate detail of his unique
guitar style. Whether it’s the uplifting message of “Shower The People
\,” the inherent longing of “Fire & Rain\,” or the celebration of
“Your Smiling Face\,” the result is an authentic\, heartfelt experienc
e that honors Taylor’s legacy\, while inviting listeners to feel as thou
gh the music is being shared just for them. \nGedeon began honing his craf
t in New York City’s legendary Greenwich Village music scene during the
1990s\, performing in storied venues such as The Village Gate\, The B
ack Fence\, and The Red Lion. It wasn’t long before he became known as
a singer and songwriter whose warmth and authenticity could make even thos
e in the farthest corner of a room feel like they were right up front. \nH
is talent and stage presence have taken him to some of New York’s most i
conic venues\, including Le Cirque\, The Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Cen
ter\, and The Waldorf Astoria Grand Ballroom\, where he performed as part
of the opening band for Dan Aykroyd and The Blues Brothers at The Alzhe
imer’s Foundation Annual Fundraiser. \nHis music has traveled well beyon
d New York. Gedeon has performed at The Smithsonian in Washington\, D.C.
\, The Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia\, Flathead Lake Lodge in Mon
tana\, Mauna Kea Resort in Hawaii\, The Ocean Club on Paradise Island
in the Bahamas\, and even at The Royal Palace in Morocco. \nAs both a sol
o artist and collaborator\, Gedeon has opened shows for America\, The Ma
rshall Tucker Band\, Kenny Rogers\, Jay Leno\, Dana Carvey\, and Livi
ngston Taylor. He has performed with renowned musicians including guitaris
ts Oz Noy and Bernie Williams\, drummers Dave Weckl and Steve Holley
\, and saxophonist Mark Rivera (Billy Joel\, Ringo Starr\, Foreigner). \
nAmong Gedeon’s most memorable performances was at the wedding of radio
icon Howard Stern\, where he performed three duets with Billy Joel. Later
that evening\, as part of the house band\, he backed up Phoebe Snow and
Pat Monahan of Train on their hits “Calling All Angels” and
“Drops of Jupiter.” \nToday\, in addition to his solo work and touring
with Coming Home: The Music of James Taylor\, Gedeon tours nationally w
ith “Taylor\, Simon\, King: A Celebration of Three American Troubadors\
,” honoring the timeless music of James Taylor\, Carly Simon\, and Caro
le King. \nMore than three decades after his first gigs in Greenwich Villa
ge\, Gedeon continues to perform with the same passion\, sincerity\, and s
pirit that have defined his journey from the very beginning — creating m
oments of connection through music that feels both familiar and profoundly
his own. \nPart of the Spotlight Series\, Sponsored by DFT Communications
