 Established 1972” by The Nighthawks\,is an album that represents 50 year
 s of Washington DC’s road warriors going strong. \nOn this landmark anni
 versary\, founder\, lead singer and harpmaster Mark Wenner is still at the
  helm\, while drummer Mark Stutso\,guitarist Dan Hovey and bassist Paul Pi
 sciotta all share vocals and songwriting\, making this lineup one of the s
 trongest ever. Decades of gigs and countless rabid fans have earned them t
 he name “The Best Bar Band In The World.” More than a bar band or blue
 s band\, as they’re frequently labeled\, this is a band that played with
  Carl Perkins in addition to Muddy Waters. \nIn March 2020\, with a brand-
 new recording to promote\, The Nighthawks did something previously unthink
 able: They stopped in the middle of a Florida tour and drove home. Like so
  many other people\, the band members found themselves out of work as the 
 coronavirus swept the country. Itching to play\, The Nighthawks found a co
 uple of spaces large enough to stay apart while woodshedding new material.
  Previously\, the process had been a streamlined one: The band would rough
  out a dozen new tunes in an afternoon and perform them every night for a 
 year or two before recording. But now there was time\, tons of it. Weeks t
 urned into months. \nProduced by the Nighthawks and longtime compadre Davi
 d Earl\, they took advantage of the pandemic slowdown to hunker down in Ea
 rl’s Severn Sound Studios in Annapolis\, Maryland and crank out fourteen
  new tracks in classic Nighthawks style. \nDan Hovey wrote a very relevant
  rocker\, “You Seem Distant.” Mark Stutso followed with a full blast 
 “Coming and Going.” Florida friend Colin Kenny\, a.k.a. Raiford Starke
 \, wrote the soulful “West Memphis” and the band stylistically took it
  to Memphis. Stutso came up with “Gas Station Chicken” and everyone co
 ntributed to bringing in the funk. Hovey added three more: “Houseband\,
 ” “Fuss and Fight\,” and the acoustic delight “Driving.” In betw
 een are British pub rock monster Gariant Watkins’ “Nobody”\; Jimmy R
 eed’s “Take it Easy\,” featuring producer David Earl contributing th
 e Eddie Taylor licks on guitar\; Eddie Hinton’s version of Sam Cook’s 
 “I’ll Come Running Back”\; John Hammond’s version of Mose Allison
 ’s “Ask Me Nice”\; a wild version of the reggae classic “Johnny To
 o Bad”\; an outtake rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Ain’t That Lovin
 ’ You”\; a Hillbilly interpretation of the Coasters’ “Run Red Run
 ”\; and half a dozen others that fell by the wayside. They’d play\, re
 cord\, rearrange\, and re-record til they got them just right. \nIn the tr
 adition they set forth on Rock and Roll\, the band’s debut 1974 recordin
 g and mission statement\, the material is not bound by genre other than th
 e widest range of American Roots Music.

 nFor a handful of summers about 30 years ago\, tourists who wandered into 
 a large dancehall in Stanley\, Idaho\, witnessed a family tradition findin
 g new life. Young and old sat shoulder-to-shoulder\, taking a break from t
 he town’s mountain hikes and river campgrounds to take in Muzzie Braun a
 nd the Boys––a local family band who’d made it to the Grand Ole Opry
 \, effortlessly spouted cowboy poetry and Western swing at gatherings arou
 nd the country\, and featured Muzzie’s four young sons––precocious b
 oys with rock-and-roll futures. \n  \n“There were kids running around\,
  people dancing\,” says Micky Braun\, the youngest brother who first cli
 mbed on stage to join the family when he was about five years-old. “Gary
  and I’d get up and play a couple of songs\, then we’d get off and the
  older brothers would stay up and play a couple more. It’s pretty funny\
 , looking back on it.” He laughs a little\, then adds\, still smiling\, 
 “That’s how we got started playing.” \n  \nThe Braun brothers never
  stopped. Big brothers Cody and Willy started Reckless Kelly\, and Micky a
 nd Gary left Idaho for Austin and started Micky and the Motorcars\, a road
 -dogging favorite whose nonstop tour for the last 17 years has defined not
  just the lives of the brothers\, but also shaped Austin’s roots-rock re
 surgence that has played out over the last two decades. With their anticip
 ated new album Long Time Comin’\, the Motorcars cement their place as el
 der statesmen of that alt-country scene who have managed to master that ev
 er-elusive blend of artistic familiarity and surprise. \n  \n“I hope pe
 ople take the time to hear the album as a whole\, and I hope they like it\
 ,” Gary says from his home in Austin. “I think this one is a little bi
 t better.” He pauses and laughs as he drawls\, “So I hope they like it
  a little more.”  \n  \nFor the Motorcars\, the question is never real
 ly whether to tour but where to play next. Gary––who handles guitar\, 
 mandolin\, harmonica\, harmonies\, and occasionally lead vocals––and M
 icky\, lead vocalist and acoustic guitarist\, are joined in the Motorcars 
 by Andy Carrell on bass\, Bobby Paugh on drums and percussion\, and new ba
 ndmate Pablo Trujillo on guitar. The combination of familiar and fresh pla
 yers has reinvigorated the Motorcars’ live show\, which buzzes through a
  low-key rock-and-roll rapture built on grooves and the Brauns’ signatur
 e harmonies. \n  \nA mix of new and old also shaped the Long Time Comin
 ’ recording process. Produced by Keith Gattis\, the 11-song album relied
  in part on Gattis’ go-to Nashville studio players––a first for the 
 Motorcars. “It still sounds like Micky and the Motorcars\, but it was fu
 n working with different guys who we’d never worked with before\,” Mic
 ky says. “They’ve been Keith’s band for 15 years. He can say\, ‘Gi
 ve me a shuffle with a boom-chuck\,’ and they know what he’s talking a
 bout.”  \n  \nThe band isn’t the only change on Long Time Comin’.
  Gary\, who has always contributed a song or two to Motorcar records\, wro
 te or co-wrote six of the album’s tracks and sings every tune he penned.
  “I don’t think I decided to really write more––I think I just got
  better at it and worked a little harder at it the past couple of years\,
 ” Gary says. “In the past\, I just let Micky do it because he was good
  at it. It was easy for me not to do it.”  \n  \nMicky loves the shift
 . “It’s almost a split album between the two of us on lead vocal––
 very different from our normal\,” he says. “I think our fans will enjo
 y it. They always love the songs Gary sings live. They always want him to 
 sing more.”  \n  \nThe album kicks off with the ambling “Road to You
 .” Written by Micky and Courtney Patton\, the rollicking singalong is cl
 assic Motorcars and an ideal welcome mat for the collection. Sauntering 
 “Rodeo Girl” swings and punches up the pace\, before “Alone Again To
 night”––a Gary track written with Gattis––watches loneliness wit
 h empathetic ache.  \n  \nSeveral tracks take note of the universal sear
 ch for comfort––even when it’s not the stuff of fairytales or even p
 articularly dignified. Over crunchy guitars\, “Stranger Tonight” captu
 res an evening’s quest for no-strings companionship. “It was an idea I
  had just watching people at bars––that lonely girl I saw time and tim
 e again but with a different set of glasses\, over and over\,” Gary says
 . “It seems like everybody can relate to that––out looking for somet
 hing new that doesn’t have to be love.” \n  \nSweet and sad\, “Brea
 k My Heart\,” another track penned by Gary with Jeff Crosby\, looks back
  after the end of a relationship. “You’re not mad anymore but you’re
  thankful of the good times\,” Gary says. “It’s also about finding y
 ourself again. It’s a moving-on song.” Quiet and sparse\, the Gary-pen
 ned “Run into You” details a longing to cross paths with an ex-lover w
 ho’s moved on with heartbreaking clarity. \n  \nAnchored by crying B-3 
 organ\, “Hold This Town Together” explores the struggle to enjoy what 
 once was easy after the loss of someone who’ll never come back. After ye
 ars of trying\, Micky wrote the song for Mark\, a friend and the Motorcars
 ’ first bassist\, who passed away. “Hold This Town\,” written by Mic
 ky and Jeff Crosby\, muses over the hometown faces and places that never c
 hange. “There are the same people at the same bars\, the same people wor
 king at the grocery stores\,” Micky says\, then adds with a laugh\, “I
 t’s kind of a depressing party song.” Another Jeff Crosby-Micky collab
 oration\, “Thank My Mother’s God” pays beautiful tribute to moms and
  their devotion to their black sheep\, running wild. \n  \nTwo album stan
 douts stand tall: “Lions of Kandahar\,” written by Gary alone\, and th
 e title track\, which Micky penned with master songwriter Bruce Robison. O
 ver instrumentation that evokes the tense hum of Middle Eastern military a
 ctivity\, “Lions of Kandahar” follows a deployment from a first-person
  perspective. The result is jarring\, compelling\, and deeply human––a
  breathtaking piece of songwriting that took five years to complete. Winso
 me “Long Time Comin’” is an ode to the satisfaction of patience and 
 perseverance rewarded in different forms––a stunning tapestry that als
 o reflects the road to the album itself. \n  \nGuitars and songs at the r
 eady\, Micky and Gary hope most of all that their sprawling cross-continen
 tal fanbase connect with Long TimeComin’\, a collection four years in t
 he making. “If you can put your heart on your sleeve and say it\, it’s

 ibson Brothers \nThere’s a reason why Ricky Skaggs pulled Eric and Leigh
  Gibson off the stage at the Ryman \ntwo decades ago and offered to produc
 e their debut record. The same thing that led David \nFerguson and Grammy 
 Award winning producer and Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach to \nco‑writ
 e and produce their 14th album “Mockingbird” (2018) and release it on 
 his own label Easy \nEye Sound alongside cultural icons such as Hank Willi
 ams Jr. and Dr. John: The Gibson \nBrothers are the real deal. They can pi
 ck. They can sing. And they can write a damn good \ncountry song. They’v
 e won about every bluegrass award you can name and released albums on \nal
 most every Premier Americana label you can think of including Sugar Hill a
 nd Rounder\, and\, if \nthat’s not enough\, their songs have been record
 ed by bluegrass legends no less than Del \nMcCoury. It’s a resume almost
  anybody in country music would be proud to have. But despite all \nof thi
 s\, The Gibson Brothers are not yet household names. Their latest album\, 
 \n“Darkest Hour\,” produced by dobro master Jerry Douglas might just 
 change that. \nAs soon as you hear Leigh singing with Alison Krauss [“I 
 Feel The Same Way As You”] on the \nnew project you realize that his voi
 ce is as good as anyone in music today. Add the brother \nharmony to that 
 and they have something truly unique. While “Mockingbird” featured gor
 geous \nproduction\, recreating the sound on stage was difficult. \n“We 
 put together a little band to go out and try to recreate it\,” \nEric t
 old me\, but we couldn’t. We would have to have such a huge band to \ntr
 y to recreate that record\, but we did the best we could.” \nDouglas—w
 ho has won 14 Grammy awards and backed up everyone from Ray Charles to Pau
 l \nSimon and George Jones—wanted to make a record they could actually p
 lay on the road. So he \npicked the best songs (out of dozens) and squirre
 led them away in Sound Emporium’s Studio B. \nBut then the pandemic hit.
  \n“We did our last shows in March of 2020\, ” Eric told me. \n“We 
 were in Nashville the week everything was shutting down. It was surreal\,
  but Jerry was like\, \n‘Guys\, the world’s going crazy. Let’s let 
 this be our little cocoon. \n’ And we did. We cut all of the acoustic st
 uff and then went home and didn’t play any more gigs until things start
 ed opening. \nThen we went back and finished the record with Jerry in Feb
 ruary of 2021.” \nThe result is arguably the strongest record The Gibson
  Brothers have ever made. The songs \nrecorded in the first recording peri
 od featured Mike Barber (bass)\, Justin Moses (mandolin)\, \nEamon McGloug
 hlin (fiddle)\, and of course\, Jerry Douglas\, adding in John Gardner (dr
 ums)\, \nGuthrie Trapp (electric guitar)\, and Todd Parks (bass) for the f
 inal tracks\, \n“Darkest Hour” showcases just how easily Eric and Lei
 gh move from what Dan Auerbach dubbed “country soul” \n(“I Go Drivin
 g”) to high octane bluegrass (“What a Difference A Day Makes” and 
 “Dust”) with \nDouglas always keeping the spotlight on the songs thems
 elves. \n“That’s what I love about those guys\,” Douglas told me 
 “they are just great songwriters.” \nGrowing up on a dairy farm in nor
 thern New York and then traveling around the world in a \nbluegrass band h
 as given them a unique vantage point on life\, and the songs on “Darkest
  Hour” \nare a testament to that. “Jerry wanted to hear everything we
 ’d written\,” Eric told me\, “so we just \nsent him songs: brand ne
 w songs\, old songs\, there’s stuff on that record 20 years old that we 
 \nnever recorded. We wanted to see what he would do with us as singer‑so
 ngwriters. We respect \nhim that much. Some of my favorite records are Jer
 ry Douglas produced records. He didn’t \ndisappoint.” \nIf The Gibson 
 Brothers had stayed in Nashville in 1999 they might possibly be Grand Ole 
 Opry \nmembers by now. At the very least they would be hit songwriters on 
 Music Row. But\, just like \ntheir buddy Del McCoury\, they chose family o
 ver success (McCoury was in his 50s when he \nmoved to Nashville and didn
 ’t really see major success until he was approaching 60). All they \nnee
 d is someone to shine a light on them.Their talent level is well‑establi
 shed\, the only \nproducers they have ever worked with are Ricky Skaggs\, 
 Dan Auerbach\, David Ferguson \nandJerry Douglas. I dare say not many musi
 cians can stack up a list of producers that strong. \nFor The Gibson Broth
 ers though\, they just want to keep writing\, singing\, and standing on a 
 \nstage.

 1953 in Detroit\, Michigan\, Marshall Crenshaw learned to tune a guitar co
 rrectly at\nage ten and has been trying ever since. His first big break ca
 me in 1978 playing John\nLennon in “Beatlemania”\, first as an underst
 udy in New York\, then in the West Coast\ncompany\, followed by a national
  touring company. Removing himself from that situation in\nFeb. 1980\, Mar
 shall settled in New York City. Enthralled by the hyper-diverse musical\nc
 ulture of the City\, and the local Rock scene in particular\, Marshall for
 med a Rock and Roll\nband with brother Robert on drums and Chris Donato on
  bass. \n  \nAfter crossing paths with the great and legendary Alan Betro
 ck\, Marshall recorded his\ndebut single “Something’s Gonna Happen” 
 for Betrock’s Shake Records label\; at nearly the\nsame time\, legendary
  Rockabilly singer Robert Gordon’s recording of Marshall’s “Someday\
 nSomeway” was released as a single on the RCA label. These two records s
 imultaneously\nbroke big on New York’s WNEW-FM\, causing Marshall and hi
 s trio’s local popularity to\nexplode. \n  \nAnd so began a career that
 ’s spanned four decades\, 13 albums\, film and TV appearances\n(Buddy Ho
 lly in “La Bamba”) and thousands of live performances\nMarshall formed

  years of touring. Twenty years on the road. “My own weariness amazes me
 \,” as Bob Dylan sings to his Tambourine Man. I feel ya\, Bob. But the d
 epth of my gratitude amazes me too. I’m humbled by the countless gifts o
 f fanship and friendship throughout the past two decades. I would say it
 ’s been a dream\, except I never could have dreamt up most of it. I’ve
  shared stages and drinks in hotel rooms with my heroes\, met children nam
 ed after me\, made friendships rooted in music from Auckland to the Arctic
  Circle\, performed on trains\, on boats\, for Wall Street men in tuxes a
 nd for the muddy denizens of a musk ox farm… Not bad for a lonely ramble
 r girl from Idaho. It was always a nebulous gut feeling that got the show 
 on the road\, and so it is now but in reverse. A gut feeling is telling me
  to get off the road\, at least for now. After 2026\, touring and I will p
 art ways for a year\, maybe two\, maybe fifty…it’s hard to say at this
  point. I do hope to keep performing in some capacity. Maybe come see me o
 f a weeknight in some Boise dive\, playing for potatoes? Or strumming the 
 guitar for a handful of fellow meditators as we contemplate the Dharma and
  the temporary nature of all things. I need some time for a new exploratio
 n\, to try to be the kind of mother I want to be\, and to stop moving long
  enough “to let my soul catch up with me\,” as my grandma Jeanne used 
 to say. Who knows what will come of that? Maybe on some jingle-jangle morn
 ing I’ll come following the next great dream\, rested and ready to go an
 ywhere. But until then\, suffice it to say…thank you. Thank you\, thank 
 you to everyone who carried me forward all this way and in all your differ
