DESCRIPTION:Showcasing the most important collection of Belgian symbolist
art in private hands—assembled by Charles Hack over more than four decad
es—the exhibition features over 150 major works by Belgian and other Eur
opean artists in their orbit. Shadows and Light charts a world of dualitie
s: dream and reality\, modernism and tradition\, music and silence\, myste
ry and revelation. Together\, these works offer a counterpart and counterp
oint to the sun-drenched landscapes of contemporary neo-impressionism\, as
serting a distinct and rival presence in Belgium.\n\nNew research illumina
tes the complex world of Belgian artists at the vanguard of the internatio
nal symbolist movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centurie
s—a pivotal moment in the development of modern art. Composed of ten “
movements\,” the exhibition unfolds in the galleries as a visual symphon
y with artists engaging with vital issues of modern life\, including quest
ions of faith\, social justice\, historical identity\, and psychological a
nalysis. Building on the historic tradition of Belgian and Flemish art\, t
he exhibition demonstrates how these artists’ works are innovative in st
yle and personal vision\, significantly expanding the language of art.\n\n
Belgian artists represented include: Cécile Cauterman\, William Degouve d
 e Nuncques\, Léon Frederic\, Fernand Khnopff\, Georges Le Brun\, Xavier M
 ellery\, Constantin Meunier\, George Minne\, Armand Rassenfosse\, and Léo
n Spilliaert. With forty-six works by Spilliaert\, the exhibition seeks to
introduce North American audiences to one of Belgium’s most enigmatic a
nd celebrated artists. Paintings by Gustave Moreau\, Dante Gabriel Rossett
i\, František Kupka\, and Koloman Moser\, as well as works from the McMul
len Museum’s collection\, elucidate the rich context of international sy
mbolist art\, in which Belgians played a leading role.\n\nShadows and Ligh
t is accompanied by a catalogue\, edited by Jeffery Howe\, with contributi
ons from American and Belgian scholars Anne Adriaens-Pannier\, Claude Cern
 uschi\, Edouard Derom\, Alison Hokanson\, Howe\, and Oliver Wunsch\, provi
ding contextual background to the time period and the Belgian avant-garde
and offering fresh examinations of Fernand Khnopff\, George Minne\, and L
éon Spilliaert.\n\nOrganized by the McMullen Museum\, Shadows and Light h
as been curated by Jeffery Howe and is underwritten by Boston College with

DESCRIPTION:Boston University Art Galleries presents Between the Bylines i
 n Stone Gallery\, from September 2 - December 10\, 2026.\n\n \n\nThe exhib
ition curated by Susan Bright investigates one crucial issue – that of a
bsence. It looks at who gets represented in the newspaper and how that rep
resentation takes shape. It takes as its medium one that is disappearing.
The featured artists undertake interventions into newspapers by concealing
\, obstructing\, redacting\, or disguising elements of the medium to highl
ight this representation (or lack of it). This invites the audience to con
template issues of subjectivity\, trust\, and control in press coverage.\n
 \n \n\nFeatured artists include Alexandra Bell\, Jennifer Bolande\, Daniel
 a Comani\, Toni Pepe\, Anne Eastman\, Odette England\, Laura Letinsky\, Lo
 rie Novak\, Sa’dia Rehman\, Donna Ruff\, Lorna Simpson\, Mickey Smith\,
Clare Strand\, and Carmen Winant.\n\n \n\nThe galleries are open Tuesday t
hrough Saturday\, 11am to 5pm. Between the Bylines will be closed for Than
 ksgiving from Sunday\, November 22 through Monday\, November 30.\n\n \n\nA

DESCRIPTION:Professor Mark Bell from the University of Minnesota will give
a presentation at the MIT Security Studies Program's Wednesday Seminar.\n
\nSummary: Extended nuclear deterrence has been a core feature of U.S. gra
nd strategy throughout the nuclear age. However\, shifting U.S. commitment
s\, a changing balance of power\, and potential new patrons of extended nu
clear deterrence are raising the question of how extended nuclear deterren
ce operates in more general terms\, beyond the U.S. case. We identify a tr
ilemma that exists when states offer extended nuclear deterrence. States c
 annot simultaneously prioritize three policy goals: credible deterrence\;
a nuclear arsenal oriented toward crisis stability\; and nonproliferation.
The choice to prioritize any two of these goals requires deprioritizing t
he third. We show that the constraints of the trilemma drove U.S. policy c
hoices during the Cold War and sheds light on the China-North Korea relati
onship and ongoing policy debates regarding potential “post-American”
options for European extended nuclear deterrence.

DESCRIPTION:The ArcGIS Online Web Portal is the starting point for any Arc
GIS Online projects. It is a cloud based web application that allows you t
o upload and store your own GIS data\, save web maps\, StoryMaps\, and oth
er ArcGIS Online applications in a centralized location. You can control a
ccess permissions for your content and share completed work with the world
\, or restrict access to only your working group. It also provides tools t
o search GIS data that was published on the ArcGIS Online platform and mak
es it easy to import that data into your applications. In this tutorial\,
I will give a brief introduction on what is ArcGIS Online. Then we will lo
g onto the web portal and I will explain the structure of the user interfa
ce and how to use the basic tools to manage your content\, manage permissi
ons\, and search for data. In this tutorial we will not cover how to use s
pecific applications (such as Web Viewer\, StoryMaps\, Dashboards\, etc).
No software installation is required\, just an internet connection and an
internet browser. You will need an ArcGIS Online account.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Access to Low-Valent Boron via Mild Fragmentation\n\nAb
stract: \n\n \n\nLow-valent boron compounds remain far less developed than
their carbon analogues\, largely due to their high reactivity\, limited s
tability\, and the difficulty of controlling their generation. Among these
species\, borylenes have emerged as highly promising intermediates for sm
 all-molecule activation and bond-forming reactions. However\, state-of-the
-art approaches to borylenes typically rely on strong reducing reagents or
harsh conditions\, which restrict functional-group compatibility and prac
tical applications.\n\n \n\nWe explored alternative and milder strategies
for accessing borylenes and boryl anions without the use of aggressive rea
gents. Two precursors\, boranorbornadiene and diazoborane\, will be presen
ted\, with particular emphasis on the diazoborane platform. Detailed inves
tigations of electronic structure and reactivity reveal intriguing paralle
ls to diazoalkanes\, while also highlighting key distinctions arising from
boron’s unique valence and orbital characteristics. \n\n \n\nThis strat
egy provides new opportunities for downstream transformations\, particular
ly small-molecule activation and selective C–H borylation reactions that
are more compatible with common organic functional groups. More broadly\,
this work establishes a conceptual framework for the design of practical
 precursors to low-valent main-group intermediates.\n\n \n\nPizza will be s
erved outside of 4-370 at 3:45PM.

Speaker: Jesse Snedeker\, Ph.D.\nAffiliation: Professor\, Department of Ps
 ychology\, Harvard University\n\n \n\nHost: Dr. Pawan Sinha\n\n \n\nTalk t
itle: The use of discourse context for predictive language comprehension i
 n autism: evidence from a naturalistic EEG paradigm\n\n \n\nAbstract: An i
ncreasing proportion of the people diagnosed with autism have strong langu
age skills\, as measured by both standardized tests and laboratory tasks.
Nevertheless\, difficulties in social communication and interaction remai
n a core diagnostic feature of autism. There are two broad ways to reconc
ile these observations: 1) our assessments could be failing the capture hi
gher-level language skills that are impaired (or the temporal dynamics of
these processes)\; 2) the social communication difficulties could arise fo
r reasons largely independent from linguistic processing. To explore the
first possibility my lab has focused on predictive lexical processing whic
h appears to be the central bottleneck in language comprehension. We firs
t look at explicit lexical prediction using a sentence cloze task and disc
over that explicit lexical prediction in both adults and children depends
more on structural language abilities than on diagnostic status. This dat
a does not rule out deficits in lexical prediction due to the limited cont
ext provided in such tasks and their insensitivity to differences in the t
iming of prediction. To explore moment-to-moment lexical prediction in a r
icher discourse\, we have developed a naturalistic EEG task that we call t
he Storytime Paradigm. I’ll present recent data which demonstrates that
lexical processing this task is sensitive to both development change and
individual differences\, with the effects of prediction growing with age a
nd linguistic knowledge. Then I will reveal our findings from a group of c
hildren with autism diagnoses (6-12 years) and a matched control group. I
will end by discussing the need for parallel research on other well-defin
 ed subgroups of autistic folks.

DESCRIPTION:Angular momentum transport in magnetic insulators - a probe of
quantum magnetism\n\nMagnetic interactions allow emergent collective exci
tations like magnons (quantized spin waves) to transport electronic angula
r momentum even in insulators\, when charge degrees of freedom are localiz
ed. In recent years\, electrical techniques based on the spin Hall effect
and its inverse have made it possible to examine the excitation and propa
gation of spin angular momentum in magnetic insulators. This opens up new
avenues for studying insulating quantum magnets\, systems in which strong
magnetic interactions and geometric frustration lead to competing ordered
states and quantum fluctuations. Of particular interest are candidate qu
antum spin liquids\, in which quantum fluctuations are theorized to preven
t long-range order and lead to exotic fractionalized spin -carrying excita
tions. I will introduce the ideas and techniques\, and I will show recent
experimental results on thermally driven spin transport in two transition
metal oxides and a Kitaev-like quantum magnet\, finishing with an outlook
  at future opportunities.

DESCRIPTION:Mastery over Novelty: MUGIC® - a lasting tool for musicianshi
p\n\nThis lecture explores a pivotal shift in the relationship between tec
hnology and the performing arts—from chasing novelty to cultivating mast
ery. Violinist\, composer\, and technologist Mari Kimura presents MUGIC®
(Music/User Gesture Interface Control)\, a groundbreaking motion sensor de
signed to deepen\, not replace\, musicianship. Unlike many fleeting tech i
nnovations\, MUGIC® is a lightweight\, wearable device that captures expr
essive gestures in real time\, converting them into control data for sound
\, visuals\, and interactive media. Designed with performers in mind\, it
 emphasizes expressivity\, accessibility\, and longevity—offering a susta
inable model for integrating technology into the arts\, education\, and th
erapeutic practices. Drawing from over a decade of development and real-wo
rld application—from interdisciplinary curricula to stages such as Linco
 ln Center\, the Venice Biennale\, and Expo 2025 Osaka—Kimura showcases h
ow mastering a robust\, intuitive tool fosters deeper expression and long-
term artistic growth.\n\n \n\nSpeaker Bio: \n\nMari Kimura is a visionary
violinist\, composer\, technologist\, and entrepreneur whose pioneering wo
rk bridges performance\, innovation\, and education. A recipient of the Gu
ggenheim Fellowship\, the Fromm Commission from Harvard\, and a residency
at IRCAM in Paris\, she was awarded the 2025 SEAMUS Award for lifetime ach
ievement in electroacoustic music. The Carnegie Corporation recognized her
as an “Immigrant: Pride of America.”\n\nInternationally acclaimed for
inventing the subharmonics technique\, enabling violinists to play an oct
ave below the instrument’s natural range\, she was hailed by The New Yor
k Times as a “virtuoso playing at the edge.” Her music\, integrating c
ontemporary composition with motion-sensor technology\, has been commissio
ned by ensembles such as the Cassatt String Quartet\, Harvard New Music En
semble and others. An active performer and improviser\, she has premiered
works by John Adams\, Luciano Berio\, and Tania León\, and collaborated w
ith artists such as Jim O’Rourke\, Henry Kaiser and Elliott Sharp. A lon
gtime collaborator on the ERC project involving SOMAX — an AI-improvisat
ion engine developed at IRCAM — she regularly performs at IRCAM's ImproT
ech festivals.\n\nKimura joined UC Irvine’s ICIT program as a Professor
of Music in 2017 and retired in June 2026\, when she was named Professor E
meritus. She continues to teach as a graduate faculty at Juilliard since 1
 998. In 2020\, she launched MUGIC® (Music/User Gesture Interface Control)
\, a compact motion sensor that transforms physical gestures into data for
controlling music\, visuals\, and beyond. MUGIC® is now used in major ve
nues—including Lincoln Center\, the Venice Biennale\, and Osaka Expo 202
5—and at leading institutions such as Harvard\, Juilliard\, and Berlin
’s University of the Arts (UdK).\n\nDuring the pandemic\, Kimura earned
an MBA from UC Irvine’s Merage School and was recognized by the U.S. Hou
se and California Legislature for her achievements in innovation and entre
 preneurship. https://www.mugicmotion.com

DESCRIPTION:The Limits of Certainty: Creative Use of Archives in Vona Groa
rke's Hereafter and Doireann Ní Ghríofa's Said the Dead\n\nCatriona Crow
e will deliver this year's Flatley Lecture. As someone who has cared for\,
curated\, digitized\, and publicized archives for over forty years in the
National Archives of Ireland\, Crowe has always been interested in the fa
ct that records often raise more questions than they answer\; there are al
so massive gaps in the Irish archival record. The works of two female auth
ors (Vona Groarke & Doireann Ní Ghríofa)\, working respectively with gen
ealogical records in search of an ancestor and mental health records in a
search for meaning in a previous secret archive\, tackle archival problems
confronting their writing with ingenuity\, imagination and crucial transp
arency as to the methodologies they are using. Crowe will be referring to
Saidiya Hartmann's use of 'critical fabulation' as a theory and a methodol
ogy to help overcome major gaps in the African-American archival record. \
n\nCatriona Crowe is co-presenter\, with Diarmaid Ferriter\, of the RTÉ h

e Galway International Arts Festival. She was formerly Head of Special Pro

nal project bringing together more than 100 artists\, 15 curators and 7 un
iversities commissioned by the Dicastery for Culture and Education and cur
ated by Nuno Crespo. Conceived as a collective project dedicated to artist
ic creation\, scientific research\, and dialogue\, the Triennial explores
the role of art in addressing the most pressing issues of our time through
  exhibitions\, commissions\, publications and public programmes. \n\nEmpat
hy and human relationships inspired this first edition of the Triennial wh
ich\, as Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça states in his introductory
speech\, can legitimately present itself as a school of empathy\, because
it deepens transversally that same perceptive and affective capacity which
we are called to exercise in the concrete relationships of academic and s
ocial life. The very international architecture of the project is already\
, in itself\, an exercise in institutional empathy\, an invitation to inha
bit a shared listening to goodness\, truth\, and beauty. \n\nTaking place
throughout 2026–2027\, with its opening in Rio de Janeiro on August 27\,
2026\, and its conclusion in Venice\, the Triennial is structured into se
ven chapters conceived as “Exercises in Empathy”. The Boston College c

 n7:30 PM Discussion with Josh Kline\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\nJosh Kline (b. 1979\
 , Philadelphia\, USA) works in installation\, video\, sculpture\, and phot
ography. His work questions how emergent technologies are being used to ch
ange human life in the 21st Century. He often utilizes the technologies\,
practices\, and forms he scrutinizes—digitization\, data collection\, im
age manipulation\, 3D-printing\, commercial and political advertising\, pr
oductivity-enhancing substances—aiming them back at themselves. Some of
his most well-known videos use early deep fake software to speculate on th
e meaning of truth in a time of post-truth propaganda. At its core\, Kline
’s practice is focused on work and class\, exploring how today’s most
urgent social and political issues—climate change\, automation\, disease
\, and the weakening of democracy—impact the people who make up the labo
r force.\n\nThis film screening is in conjunction with Art 21s Screening S

DESCRIPTION:The Somerville Road Runners have partnered with Mighty Squirre
l Brewing Co - Waltham to bring a free weekly fun run to our club and the
local community. Many SRR members who live west of the city have a harder
time getting into Somerville after work\, so we thought we'd offer someth
ing a little easier to get to. Much like the Bur-run\, this is a fun run\,
meaning not a race and no timing\, and it is open to all - no need to be
a club member to run with us!We will alternate the course we use each week
. All courses will be in between 3.5 and 4.5 miles. Sometimes we will run
on local trail systems when we have more daylight. The brewery is a great s
pot to visit - there are two bars inside offering up some very tasty beer\
, and a large outdoor patio we can use in good weather. And the patio is d
og-friendly\, so if your pooch loves to run and you love beer\, it’s a d
ate!Mighty Squirrel Waltham is located on Rt. 60 in Waverly Oaks (411 Wave
rley Oaks Rd\, Waltham\, MA). There is plenty of parking there if you want
to drive\, or you can take a bus or the commuter rail to Waverly Square i
 n Belmont and walk/run 0.8 miles to the brewery.See https://www.srr.org/s

DESCRIPTION:UNLEASHING THE DUENDE : \nA talk and embodied workshop with Al
fredo Minetti & Fernanda Ghi\n\nWhat is duende? Poet Federico García Lorc
a described it as a raw\, embodied creative force that overtakes a perform
er — not skill\, not style\, but an expressive drive that arrives only t
hrough vulnerability and risk. This 2-hour event explores that question fi
rst through ideas\, then through the body.\n\nCultural anthropologist and
pianist Alfredo Minetti opens with a short talk on why genuine artistic ri
sk has become so rare in performance today. Drawing on Lorca\, Guy Debord'
s Society of the Spectacle\, and Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death
\, he traces how consumer culture and entertainment saturation have pushed
the performing arts toward spectacle and surface polish\, sidelining the
vulnerability that makes performance feel alive. Using classical concert m
usic as a case study — including pianist Glenn Gould's defiant breaks fr
om convention — Minetti makes the case for reclaiming performance as som
ething lived and risked\, not simply produced and consumed. \n\nMinetti an
d choreographer Fernanda Ghi then engage in a conversation on these ideas\
, bringing together their perspectives as musician and dancer before movin
g into direct physical experience.\n\nGhi leads participants into that emb
odied exploration: Is duende an energy? An emotion? A force that wakes the
most authentic\, creative self? Through guided breathing\, free movement\
, and improvisation — both solo and with a partner — participants will
explore what happens when the body moves beyond learned technique and hab
it. The practice invites letting go\, releasing control\, quieting the ana
lytical mind\, and simply being present — creating the conditions for du
ende to emerge.\n\nThis is not a class in choreography or performance tech
nique. It's an embodied investigation into creativity\, presence\, and aut
hentic expression — for anyone curious why a performance can feel hollow
even when flawlessly executed\, and what it takes to bring the danger and
depth back. No dance or musical experience required.

DESCRIPTION:City Winery Boston presents The Dead Tongues live on September
23rd at 7:30pm Across the last 15 years\, Ryan Gustafson of The Dead Tong
ues has emerged as one of modern folk’s most distinct voices. As idiosyn
cratic and spectral as the songs have sometimes been\, Gustafson has alway
s tied his visions and verses to the kinds of hooks you tuck away like tal
ismans\, pulled out in case of emergency. Dust\, Unsung Passage\, Desert:
The Dead Tongues’ albums remain some of the more compelling and curious
works in their field on this side of a century. The latest edition to The
Dead Tongues’ catalog\, the song-centric and magnetic Body of Light and
the discursive and wonderfully elliptical I Am a Cloud\, is 16 complete tu
nes split across interweaving and disparate albums.\nTicket URL: https://t
