DESCRIPTION:Showcasing the most important collection of Belgian symbolist
art in private hands—assembled by Charles Hack over more than four decad
es—the exhibition features over 150 major works by Belgian and other Eur
opean artists in their orbit. Shadows and Light charts a world of dualitie
s: dream and reality\, modernism and tradition\, music and silence\, myste
ry and revelation. Together\, these works offer a counterpart and counterp
oint to the sun-drenched landscapes of contemporary neo-impressionism\, as
serting a distinct and rival presence in Belgium.\n\nNew research illumina
tes the complex world of Belgian artists at the vanguard of the internatio
nal symbolist movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centurie
s—a pivotal moment in the development of modern art. Composed of ten “
movements\,” the exhibition unfolds in the galleries as a visual symphon
y with artists engaging with vital issues of modern life\, including quest
ions of faith\, social justice\, historical identity\, and psychological a
nalysis. Building on the historic tradition of Belgian and Flemish art\, t
he exhibition demonstrates how these artists’ works are innovative in st
yle and personal vision\, significantly expanding the language of art.\n\n
Belgian artists represented include: Cécile Cauterman\, William Degouve d
 e Nuncques\, Léon Frederic\, Fernand Khnopff\, Georges Le Brun\, Xavier M
 ellery\, Constantin Meunier\, George Minne\, Armand Rassenfosse\, and Léo
n Spilliaert. With forty-six works by Spilliaert\, the exhibition seeks to
introduce North American audiences to one of Belgium’s most enigmatic a
nd celebrated artists. Paintings by Gustave Moreau\, Dante Gabriel Rossett
i\, František Kupka\, and Koloman Moser\, as well as works from the McMul
len Museum’s collection\, elucidate the rich context of international sy
mbolist art\, in which Belgians played a leading role.\n\nShadows and Ligh
t is accompanied by a catalogue\, edited by Jeffery Howe\, with contributi
ons from American and Belgian scholars Anne Adriaens-Pannier\, Claude Cern
 uschi\, Edouard Derom\, Alison Hokanson\, Howe\, and Oliver Wunsch\, provi
ding contextual background to the time period and the Belgian avant-garde
and offering fresh examinations of Fernand Khnopff\, George Minne\, and L
éon Spilliaert.\n\nOrganized by the McMullen Museum\, Shadows and Light h
as been curated by Jeffery Howe and is underwritten by Boston College with
major support from the Patrons of the McMullen Museum and Mary Ann ’67
 and Vincent Q. Giffuni ’65\, P’94.

DESCRIPTION:Boston University Art Galleries presents Between the Bylines i
 n Stone Gallery\, from September 2 - December 10\, 2026.\n\n \n\nThe exhib
ition curated by Susan Bright investigates one crucial issue – that of a
bsence. It looks at who gets represented in the newspaper and how that rep
resentation takes shape. It takes as its medium one that is disappearing.
The featured artists undertake interventions into newspapers by concealing
\, obstructing\, redacting\, or disguising elements of the medium to highl
ight this representation (or lack of it). This invites the audience to con
template issues of subjectivity\, trust\, and control in press coverage.\n

Math Sequence for First Year Engineering Students at the University of Mic
higan\n\nAbstract: After the College of Engineering completed a self-study
about math preparation for their programs\, our Math Department was invit
ed to create two new courses that are expected to become the core for all
first year engineering students. The first is a linear algebra course and
the second a condensed calculus course that combines ideas from our curren
t Calc I–Calc II sequence\, emphasizes a “numerical” perspective (as
opposed to analytic)\, incorporates more modern engineering applications\
, and recognizes that over 95% of Michigan engineering students have prior
exposure to calculus from high school. After a full year of discussions a

k will discuss the factors leading to this sequence of events and how we h

DESCRIPTION:Graduate students and postdocs are often asked to mentor under
graduate students\, summer interns\, rotation students\, or research assis
tants while simultaneously making progress on their own research and caree
r goals. Mentoring can be rewarding while providing an opportunity to deve
lop leadership and teaching skills. However\, mentoring can also be challe
nging\, especially when done at the wrong time or without necessary bounda
ries\, appropriate training\, and support from your principal investigator
.\n\nMentoring From the Middle is a three-part workshop series designed fo
r doctoral students and postdocs. The series provides practical strategies
for building productive mentoring relationships\, supporting learning\, a
nd addressing problems before they become unmanageable. The goal is to hel
p you find balance between being a supportive mentor and protecting your o
wn time\, research\, and professional development.\n\nUnit 1: In this webi
nar\, we will explore factors to consider in advance of mentoring a studen
t and discuss how to engage with interns through the onboarding and orient
ation process. Communication related to research projects\, boundaries\, a
nd expectation setting will be discussed within the context of psychologic

DESCRIPTION:Robots still lag far behind living organisms in efficiency\, a
daptability\, and resilience. Most are built from rigid\, motorized mechan
isms and lean on ever more computationally intensive perception\, control\
, and learning pipelines to cope with the real world. Animals\, by contras
t\, derive these capabilities directly from their material composition and
morphology. For example\, muscles provide compliant\, back-drivable actua
 tion\; event-based mechanoreceptors translate body-environment interaction
s into rich feedback\; and multiscale tissue architectures impart toughnes
s and graceful degradation. Northwestern University’s Ryan Truby\, along
with his research group\, the Robotic Matter Lab\, develops robotic mater
ials\, or material systems that empower robots to operate\, learn\, and ad
apt in real-world environments as animals do.\n \nIn this talk\, Truby wil
l show how the team establishes performance-through-processing relationshi
ps to inversely design robotic materials for new actuation and sensing cap
abilities\, while advancing digital design and additive manufacturing plat
forms that reveal new structure-property relationships in soft\, architect
ed\, and structural robotic materials. He will present the team’s work i
n architecting elastomers from structural to molecular scales as artificia
l muscles\; then introduce efforts to create iontronic materials for robot
perception using polymerizable ionic liquids. Finally\, Truby will share
the team’s recent efforts to advance the multiscale design and 3D printi
ng of robotic materials. Altogether\, these efforts advance a body-up\, ra
ther than compute-down\, paradigm for robotics in which actuation\, percep
tion\, and learning are materialized in the bodies of robots themselves.

u measure the distance between exotic smooth structures on the same 4-mani
fold? One natural measure is the complexity of an h-cobordism between them
. In this talk\, I will compare several notions of complexity for h-cobord

DESCRIPTION:Since ChatGPT arrived\, surveys suggest that 86% of students u
se GenAI in their academic work. But what do students really think about t
hese tools\, and about their own writing? In this talk\, I share findings
from a large-scale survey (n=342) of University of Illinois undergraduates
conducted in spring 2026. These students occupy a unique moment in histor
y: they learned to write before GenAI existed\, which makes them well posi
tioned to compare their own abilities to a machine’s. The results may su
rprise you. Students report high familiarity with AI but lukewarm trust. N
early half of humanities students say they never use these tools at all\,
while business and STEM students use and trust them the most. When asked t
o compare their writing to GenAI\, students overwhelmingly judged their ow
n work superior\, insisting that their ideas are better. Along the way\, s
peaker John Gallagher discusses research that shows GenAI erodes writing a
bility over time by making us less persistent. Whether you use AI every da
y\, avoid it entirely\, or simply wonder what it means for how we write an
d think\, this conversation is for you.\n\n \n\nThis talk is part of WRAP
‘s series on AI and writing\, supported by a SHASS MITHIC grant.\n\n \n\
nJohn Gallagher is a Professor of English and Faculty Affiliate at the Sch
ool of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
\, where he researches AI writing\, social media habits\, and methods that
combine qualitative and quantitative techniques. He is the author of four
books\, including AI Though the Experts’ Eyes\, available from the Univ
ersity of Pittsburgh Press in September. In addition to student use of Gen
AI\, his current projects include studies of participation inequality in o
nline communities (a select few actually participate online) with implicat
 ions for LLM training data.

era brings Rossini’s epic masterpiece to the stage\, discover the remark
able story behind one of history’s most enduring heroes. Why did a mediev

How do hero myths continue to shape nations\, cultures\, and political id
eals?Join Esther Nelson\, former General and Artistic Director of Boston
Lyric Opera\, for an engaging exploration of William Tell\, placing the le
gendary Swiss archer within the broader tradition of heroic legends that h
ave inspired societies across centuries. From the medieval origins of the
Tell legend to Friedrich Schiller’s celebrated drama and Rossini’s mon
umental opera\, discover how each generation has reimagined Tell to reflec
t its own hopes\, fears\, and political aspirations.History and legend wil
l then give way to music\, with live performances by Boston Lyric Opera a

e conversation with Esther and invite questions from the audience. The pres
entation will be followed by a Q&A with the audience\, and a reception wi
th light refreshments.\n \nLEARN MORERSVP  \nEsther Nelson is an opera an
d arts leader with more than four decades of experience in the music and m

ading producers of both classic and contemporary opera\, pioneering innova
tive site-specific productions that brought opera into communities across
Greater Boston. \nPreviously\, she led The Glimmerglass Festival and Nevad
a Opera and held senior artistic and executive positions with opera compan
ies throughout the United States. A Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des
Lettres\, she was born  and educated in Europe before settling in the Un
ited States. Nelson is also a lifelong student of medieval history and bri
ngs a distinctive European perspective to opera and its cultural history.
\n  \nMorgan Beckford is Director of Community & Learning at Boston Lyric
Opera.  A soprano\, arts administrator\, and teaching artist originally
from Memphis\, Tennessee\, she brings a multidisciplinary background in op
 era\, musical theater\, jazz\, and arts education to her work.As a perform
er\, Morgan has appeared with Boston’s New Gallery Concert Series\, the
Cape Cod Chorale\, and the Choral Art Society of the South. She has also p

DESCRIPTION:Talking With Voters Across Differences \nHow can we stay open
when a voter says something that makes our hackles rise? How can we listen
without feeling we have to agree? And find “toeholds” that can help a
stuck conversation move somewhere new? \nIt’s tempting to jump in with
facts\, arguments\, or the “perfect” response (which doesn’t exist)
that will change their mind. But what if our job isn’t to change their m
ind? What becomes possible when we let go of that burden—and get curious
instead? And what if a respectful conversation across our differences can
count as success\, too? \nJoin Elizabeth Chur\, author of The Joy of Talk
ing Politics with Strangers and Bay Area Coalition co-founder Susan Bolle
for an exploration of how to engage when the stakes are high and the diff
erences are real. \nThrough stories from the field and practical strategie
s\, we’ll explore how patience\, awareness\, and empathy can help us nav
igate emotionally charged conversations without getting pulled into a powe
r struggle. We’ll leave time to wrestle with your questions and real-lif
e voter dilemmas—and to try out different approaches together. \nWe knoc
k doors and phone bank because elections matter. But how we meet one anoth
er matters\, too. At a time of profound division\, meeting a fellow citize
n with openness and respect can be a quietly radical act—and a way of pr
acticing the democracy we’re working so hard to protect. \nGo to https:/

DESCRIPTION:Luna was a New York band formed in 1991 by singer/guitarist De
an Wareham after the breakup of Galaxie 500. The band made seven studio al
bums before disbanding in 2005. After a ten-year break\, they reunited and
toured in 2015\, and in 2017 released a new LP — A Sentimental Educatio
n and an EP of instrumentals — A Place of Greater Safety. \nOther recent
reissues include a deluxe 2xLP version of their classic Penthouse album (
on Rhino) and another 2xLP set Lunafied that collects all the covers the b
and record-ed in the 1990s. \nNow scattered around the country (Los Angele
s\, New York and Austin) the band re-tains the same lineup that operated f
rom 1999 to 2005: Dean Wareham on vo-cals/guitar\, his wife Britta Phillip
s on bass\, Sean Eden on guitar\, and Lee Wall on drums.
