 art in private hands—assembled by Charles Hack over more than four decad
 es—the exhibition features over 150 major works by Belgian and other Eur
 opean artists in their orbit. Shadows and Light charts a world of dualitie
 s: dream and reality\, modernism and tradition\, music and silence\, myste
 ry and revelation. Together\, these works offer a counterpart and counterp
 oint to the sun-drenched landscapes of contemporary neo-impressionism\, as
 serting a distinct and rival presence in Belgium.\n\nNew research illumina
 tes the complex world of Belgian artists at the vanguard of the internatio
 nal symbolist movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centurie
 s—a pivotal moment in the development of modern art. Composed of ten “
 movements\,” the exhibition unfolds in the galleries as a visual symphon
 y with artists engaging with vital issues of modern life\, including quest
 ions of faith\, social justice\, historical identity\, and psychological a
 nalysis. Building on the historic tradition of Belgian and Flemish art\, t
 he exhibition demonstrates how these artists’ works are innovative in st
 yle and personal vision\, significantly expanding the language of art.\n\n
 Belgian artists represented include: Cécile Cauterman\, William Degouve d
 e Nuncques\, Léon Frederic\, Fernand Khnopff\, Georges Le Brun\, Xavier M
 ellery\, Constantin Meunier\, George Minne\, Armand Rassenfosse\, and Léo
 n Spilliaert. With forty-six works by Spilliaert\, the exhibition seeks to
  introduce North American audiences to one of Belgium’s most enigmatic a
 nd celebrated artists. Paintings by Gustave Moreau\, Dante Gabriel Rossett
 i\, František Kupka\, and Koloman Moser\, as well as works from the McMul
 len Museum’s collection\, elucidate the rich context of international sy
 mbolist art\, in which Belgians played a leading role.\n\nShadows and Ligh
 t is accompanied by a catalogue\, edited by Jeffery Howe\, with contributi
 ons from American and Belgian scholars Anne Adriaens-Pannier\, Claude Cern
 uschi\, Edouard Derom\, Alison Hokanson\, Howe\, and Oliver Wunsch\, provi
 ding contextual background to the time period and the Belgian avant-garde 
 and offering fresh examinations of Fernand Khnopff\, George Minne\, and L
 éon Spilliaert.\n\nOrganized by the McMullen Museum\, Shadows and Light h
 as been curated by Jeffery Howe and is underwritten by Boston College with
  major support from the Patrons of the McMullen Museum and Mary Ann ’67

 the first-known all-women architecture firm in Massachusetts\, founded in 
 1900 by Lois Lilley Howe\, the first woman to graduate with an architectur
 e degree from MIT. Howe\, along with architects Eleanor Manning and Mary A
 lmy\, completed more than 900 commissions throughout the course of their c
 ompany’s history. The exhibit will look at the role MIT’s architecture
  program played in supporting women in the field since the 1890s\, as well
  as Howe\, Manning & Almy’s influence on the built environment of Cambri
 dge and the firm’s ecofriendly approaches to renovation.\n\n \n\nThe Mai
 haugen Gallery (14N-130) is open Monday through Thursday\, 10am - 4pm\, ex

 n Stone Gallery\, from September 2 - December 10\, 2026.\n\n \n\nThe exhib
 ition curated by Susan Bright investigates one crucial issue – that of a
 bsence. It looks at who gets represented in the newspaper and how that rep
 resentation takes shape. It takes as its medium one that is disappearing. 
 The featured artists undertake interventions into newspapers by concealing
 \, obstructing\, redacting\, or disguising elements of the medium to highl
 ight this representation (or lack of it). This invites the audience to con
 template issues of subjectivity\, trust\, and control in press coverage.\n
 \n \n\nFeatured artists include Alexandra Bell\, Jennifer Bolande\, Daniel
 a Comani\, Toni Pepe\, Anne Eastman\, Odette England\, Laura Letinsky\, Lo
 rie Novak\, Sa’dia Rehman\, Donna Ruff\, Lorna Simpson\, Mickey Smith\,
