DESCRIPTION:Talk Title: Embodied intelligence: From connectomes to body mo
 dels\n\nAbstract: Brains and nervous systems evolved jointly with the bodi
 es they inhabit. To understand brains\, behavior\, and intelligence\, we m
 ust embrace the embodied nature of neural computation. In this talk\, I wi
 ll describe some ongoing collaborative work towards putting dynamic models
  of brains as controllers inside the bodies they evolved to sense and actu
 ate\, so that these virtual animals will be capable of interacting with si
 mulations of their environment. These efforts are currently closest to fru
 ition in the fruit fly. Here\, we are working with collaborators to develo
 p tools to interface simulations of connectomes---at the resolution of cel
 ls and synapses---in feedback with muscle actuators\, neural transduction 
 sensors\, and whole-animal biomechanics. As one example of what this appro
 ach can reveal\, I will present our recent work developing connectome simu
 lations of the fly ventral nerve cord (VNC) to identify a putative central
  pattern generator (CPG) circuit for walking. We used these simulations as
  a platform for computational screens that would be impossible in a biolog
 ical experiment. This allowed us to isolate a core CPG circuit of only 3 n
 eurons that is sufficient to generate leg motor rhythms. In ongoing work\,
  integrating simulations of connectomes with physically realistic body mod
 els will allow us to investigate active behavioral sequences and how speci
 fic recurrent neural circuits support robust\, embodied intelligence in an
 imals.\n\nBio: Bing Wen Brunton is a Professor of Biology and the Richard 
 & Joan Komen University Chair at the University of Washington in Seattle\,
  where she is also affiliated with the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Sc
 ience & Engineering and Dept. of Applied Mathematics. She has a Ph.D. in N
 euroscience from Princeton and a B.S. in Biology from Caltech. Bing's rese
 arch sits at the intersection of neurobiology\, computational science\, an
 d animal behavior\; she uses computational modeling to study how brains an
 d bodies work together to produce adaptive natural behavior. Her work has 
 been recognized with awards and honors\, including the Alfred P. Sloan Fou
 ndation Fellowship in Neuroscience (2016)\, a UW Innovation Award (2017)\,
  a Young Investigator Program award from the Air Force Office of Scientifi
 c Research (2018)\, and as a Weill Neurohub Investigator (2020). Outside o

DESCRIPTION:Matthew Brun\n\nORC Best Student Paper Award Winner\nMIT\n\nAb
 stract: Electric power infrastructure faces increasing risk of damage and 
 disruption due to wildfire.  Operators of power grids in wildfire-prone re
 gions must consider the potential impacts of unpredictable fires.  However
 \, traditional wildfire models do not effectively describe worst-case\, or
  even high-impact\, fire behavior.  To address this issue\, we propose a m
 ixed-integer conic program to characterize an adversarial wildfire that ta
 rgets infrastructure while respecting realistic fire spread dynamics.  We 
 design a wind-assisted fire spread set based on the Rothermel fire spread 
 model and propose principled convex relaxations of this set\, including a 
 new relaxation of the inner product over Euclidean balls.  We present test
  cases derived from the recent Park\, Eaton\, and Palisades fires in Calif
 ornia and solve models to identify the minimum time-to-outage of multiple-
 element contingencies and the maximum load shed associated with a sequence
  of element outages caused by a realistic wildfire.  We use the minimum ti
 me-to-outage values to screen contingencies and construct security-constra
 ined optimal power flow models that promote operational resilience against
  wildfire.\n\nBio: Matthew Brun is a final-year PhD student at the MIT Ope
 rations Research Center\, advised by Dr. Andy Sun.  His research improves 
 the design and operation of energy systems by solving large-scale\, noncon
 vex optimization problems.  He studies algorithms\, decompositions\, relax
 ations\, and heuristics for diverse energy applications\, including power 
 grid operations\, recycling supply chains for energy assets\, and infrastr
 ucture resilience against natural disasters.  He holds a B.A. in Operation
 s Research from Rice University and is a recipient of the INFORMS Undergra
 duate Operations Research Prize.  Beyond OR\, he plays trumpet and has per
 formed with the MIT Symphony Orchestra\, the Rice University Campanile Orc
 hestra\, and Mariachi Luna Llena.

 out on the floor. It has origins in slavery and the percussive dances of W
 est African Juba dance and Irish step dancing. It developed through minstr
 el shows and vaudeville in the late 19th century and emerged along with ja
 zz in the 20th century into the art form we know today. \nWhat background\

 ss subject?\nSela has been a tap teacher since 2000\, taking over Maureen 
 Cosgrove’s Boston Tap classes at the Dance Complex in 2014. While at Smi

  repercussions of this event and its impact on the course of the Revolutio
 n here on the North Shore. \nMichael Rutstein: After drafting and then rel
 uctantly abandoning a business plan to create a replica of Hannah\, Rutste
 in commissioned local boatbuilder Harold Burnham to build a representation
  of the 1812 Salem privateer FAME in 2003. For 23 seasons\, FAME sailed ou
 t of Pickering Wharf in Salem to critical and popular acclaim. In April 20
 26\, FAME was sold to the Liberty Fleet of Tall Ships in Boston.

 conflicts (1800–1840) shaped early American admiralty law post Revolutio
 n. \nLearn about the establishment of American Admiralty Law in Salem and 
 Boston following the American Revolution\, tracing how early 19th-century 
 maritime conflicts in these port cities shaped the development of American
  jurisprudence. The lecture will examine how disputes over cargo\, salvage
 \, and prize cases during the period tested and refined the young nation
 ’s legal system. Judge Young will also discuss the pivotal role played b
 y Judge John Davis in establishing practical precedents for handling these
  cases — precedents that would go on to influence the broader framework 
 of American admiralty law. \nAbout the Speaker: \nThe Honorable William G.
  Young has served as a Judge of the United States District Court for the D
 istrict of Massachusetts since 1985\, following eight years on the Massach

 which rhythms are audibly tapped out on the floor. It has origins in slave
 ry and the percussive dances of West African Juba dance and Irish step dan
 cing. It developed through minstrel shows and vaudeville in the late 19th 
 century and emerged along with jazz in the 20th century into the art form 
 we know today. \nWhat background\, training\, and or relationship do you h
 ave with this style/technique/class subject?\nSela has been a tap teacher 
 since 2000\, taking over Maureen Cosgrove’s Boston Tap classes at the Da
 nce Complex in 2014. While at Smith College she studied in the Five Colleg

 enres\, “house” is an electronic dance music genre that emerged in Chi
 cago in the late 70s/early 80s following the disco era. The term “house
 ” was derived from The Warehouse\, a Chicago club where the music was of
 ten played. Though the essence of the dance is purely freestyle\, popular 
 steps performed in NYC dance clubs were eventually recognized as “house 
 dance foundation.” Members of NYC’s Dance Fusion were the first to tea
 ch house dance\, which contributed greatly to house becoming a worldwide p
 henomenon. \nWhat background\, training\, and or relationship do you have 
 with this style/technique/class subject?\nA master Taekwondo-ist and profe
 ssional dancer\, Sean began dancing in the year 2000\, and was formally in
 troduced to house dance by Boston native Ricardo Foster Jr in 2007. For ye
 ars\, Sean sought opportunities to learn from and train under many house d
 ance teachers including Jardy Santiago\, members of NYC’s Dance Fusion\,
  and Edson Gonzaga who helped unlock Sean’s understanding of house music
  and develop his own personal dance style. Since 2013 Sean has been an act
 ive member of Boston’s underground club scene after meeting Boston house
