 n\n \n\nAbout the Speaker\n\nChristian Frederickson is a violist\, compose
 r\, and sound designer based who specializes in live music performance for
  theater and dance. Originally from Port Townsend\, WA\, he also lived in 
 Louisville\, New York City\, and is now based in Boston\, where he lives w
 ith his wife and two sons and teaches at MIT.\n\n \n\nHe was a founding me
 mber and one of the principal songwriters (along with Jason Noble and Rach
 el Grimes) of the Louisville\, KY-based instrumental band Rachel's\, who r
 eleased 6 albums on Quarterstick Records between 1995 and 2003. The 2016 r
 e-issue of 'systems/layers'\, the final Rachel's album\, garnered a "Best 
 New Reissue" on Pitchfork and was called "a truly synthesized mesh of cham
 ber music and electronics that sounded like little else…a godfather reco
 rd to the nascent (post-classical) genre…" A core ensemble of viola\, ce
 llo\, piano\, guitar/bass\, drums\, and percussion was surrounded by many 
 other orchestral instruments\, tape manipulation\, cinematic sound design\
 , found sounds and electronic elements in their studio albums. Rachel's to
 ured widely in North America and Europe\, and played a concert performance
  of their album 'Music For Egon Schiele' in Seoul\, South Korea. Music by 
 Rachel's has been  used in countless films\, theater\, and dance performan
 ces\, the most well-known of which include the 2014 Oscar-winning foreign 
 film 'The Great Beauty'\, 'Hancock' directed by Peter Berg\, 'Any Given Su
 nday' directed by Oliver Stone\, and both of the Gasland films\, directed 
 by Josh Fox. Rachel's also performed on the BBC\, NPR's "Weekend Edition S
 unday"\, WNYC's "New Sounds" including a special live performance at Merki
 n Hall in New York in 2005\, as well as the national radio networks in Bel
 gium\, Italy\, and South Korea.\n\n \n\nAs a solo artist\, Frederickson ha
 s released seven albums since 2011: The Painted Bird | Bastard\, The Paint
 ed Bird | Amidst and Custodians of Beauty are scores for contemporary danc
 e created for Pavel Zustiak and Palissimo Co. Death Metal Angola was writt
 en for a documentary film by Jeremy Xido about the rock music scene in Ang
 ola. Teratogeny\, The Starving Season\, and Islands of Light are collectio
 ns of music from various film\, dance\, and theater projects. In 2010 he f
 ormed a group called The Young Scamels with Jason Noble and Greg King of R
 achel's. Their album "Tempest" was the score for a production of the Shake
 speare play at Actors Theatre of Louisville. He has also played concerts o
 f his own music in New York City\, Seattle\, Louisville\, and Nashville in
  the past year. As a guest artist he has recorded viola with Rodan\, Shipp
 ing News\, Seluah\, Rachel Grimes\, Rivulets\, Mission of Burma\, The For 
 Carnation\, Per Mission\, Samara Lubelski\, and Shannon Wright.\n\n \n\nAf
 ter to New York in 2004\, Frederickson worked primarily in theater and dan
 ce\, continuing collaborations with Anne Bogart's SITI Co. which began wit
 h the Rachel's/SITI theater collaboration 'systems/layers' and continued a
 s he wrote and performed music for Antigone\, Trojan Women\, Hanjo\,  and 
 designed sound for Steel Hammer\, a production featuring the Bang on a Can
  All-Stars performing the music of Julia Wolfe. He is a perennial guest ar
 tist at the SITI Company's annual training intensive at Skidmore College i
 n Saratoga Springs\, NY. Frederickson also has a long-standing collaborati
 on with the choreographer and director Pavel Zuštiak  and his Palissimo C
 ompany\, creating and performing music for six evening-length pieces since
  2010. He has worked at a long list of theaters in New York City\, notably
  the Brooklyn Academy of Music\, Classic Stage Company\, The Public Theate
 r\, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater\, Atlantic Stage 2\, as well as region
 al theaters\, primarily Actor's Theatre of Louisville where he has worked 
 on over 20 productions and was a regular designer at the Humana Festival o
 f New American Plays.\n\n \n\nFrederickson was trained as a classical musi
 cian\, and holds a Bachelor's degree in performance from The Peabody Conse
 rvatory of Johns Hopkins University and a Master's degree from The Juillia
 rd School. His principal viola teachers were Paul Coletti and Eugene Becke
 r. From 2000 to 2004 he was the viola instructor at the University of Loui
 sville\, also teaching chamber music and orchestral playing. He performed 
 four seasons as a member of the Louisville String Quartet\, as well as wit
 h the Kentucky Center Chamber Players\, the Louisville Bach Society\, and 
 other chamber music ensembles.\n\n \n\nAbout the Music Forum Series\nThe M

 usical pioneer L. Shankar to the Spotlight Series on September 17\, 2026.\
 nL. Shankar is a violinist\, vocalist\, and composer whose career has rede
 fined what Indian classical music can sound like on a global stage. \nBorn
  in Madras into a family of musicians—his father V. Lakshminarayana was 
 a Carnatic vocalist and violinist—Shankar began vocal training at age tw
 o and gave his first solo concert at seven. He earned a doctorate in ethno
 musicology from Wesleyan University.\nL. Shankar is known for inventing th
 e double violin—a stereophonic double-necked electric violin\; he debute
 d the instrument in 1981 on Phil Collins’ solo album (Face Value) and on
  his own album (Who’s to Know). He has released over 20 albums and dozen
 s of unique and legendary collaborations.\nNow considered a living legend\
 , a pioneer\, and a musical genius\, L. Shankar’s devotion to making gro
 undbreaking music continues – in 2024\, he released two world music albu
 ms: Full Moon and Over the Stars\, and Answers in 2025.\nFor this Spotligh
 t performance\, Shankar will perform his original Indian classical ragas a
 nd compositions along with a handful of classic Shakti pieces. He will be 
 accompanied by an all star duo of percussion\, Shakti family member Selvag
 anesh Vinayakram\, who is a two-time Grammy Award winning member of Shakti
  and also the son of original Shakti member Vikku Vinyakram. On tabla is A
 mit Kavthekar\, regarded as one of the top-ranking tabla players of his ge
 neration and a longtime student of the late great Zakir Hussain and Zakir
