DESCRIPTION:Showcasing the most important collection of Belgian symbolist
art in private hands—assembled by Charles Hack over more than four decad
es—the exhibition features over 150 major works by Belgian and other Eur
opean artists in their orbit. Shadows and Light charts a world of dualitie
s: dream and reality\, modernism and tradition\, music and silence\, myste
ry and revelation. Together\, these works offer a counterpart and counterp
oint to the sun-drenched landscapes of contemporary neo-impressionism\, as
serting a distinct and rival presence in Belgium.\n\nNew research illumina
tes the complex world of Belgian artists at the vanguard of the internatio
nal symbolist movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centurie
s—a pivotal moment in the development of modern art. Composed of ten “
movements\,” the exhibition unfolds in the galleries as a visual symphon
y with artists engaging with vital issues of modern life\, including quest
ions of faith\, social justice\, historical identity\, and psychological a
nalysis. Building on the historic tradition of Belgian and Flemish art\, t
he exhibition demonstrates how these artists’ works are innovative in st
yle and personal vision\, significantly expanding the language of art.\n\n
Belgian artists represented include: Cécile Cauterman\, William Degouve d
 e Nuncques\, Léon Frederic\, Fernand Khnopff\, Georges Le Brun\, Xavier M
 ellery\, Constantin Meunier\, George Minne\, Armand Rassenfosse\, and Léo
n Spilliaert. With forty-six works by Spilliaert\, the exhibition seeks to
introduce North American audiences to one of Belgium’s most enigmatic a
nd celebrated artists. Paintings by Gustave Moreau\, Dante Gabriel Rossett
i\, František Kupka\, and Koloman Moser\, as well as works from the McMul
len Museum’s collection\, elucidate the rich context of international sy
mbolist art\, in which Belgians played a leading role.\n\nShadows and Ligh
t is accompanied by a catalogue\, edited by Jeffery Howe\, with contributi
ons from American and Belgian scholars Anne Adriaens-Pannier\, Claude Cern
 uschi\, Edouard Derom\, Alison Hokanson\, Howe\, and Oliver Wunsch\, provi
ding contextual background to the time period and the Belgian avant-garde
and offering fresh examinations of Fernand Khnopff\, George Minne\, and L
éon Spilliaert.\n\nOrganized by the McMullen Museum\, Shadows and Light h
as been curated by Jeffery Howe and is underwritten by Boston College with
major support from the Patrons of the McMullen Museum and Mary Ann ’67

ition curated by Susan Bright investigates one crucial issue – that of a

The featured artists undertake interventions into newspapers by concealing

DESCRIPTION:Lunch provided. Please register.\n\n \n\n\n\nDrawing from his
book Making the Liberal Media: How Conservatives Built a Movement Against
the Press (Columbia\, 2026)\, A.J. Bauer tracks the rightward shift of str
uctural media criticism in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1
950s. He contends that bias discourse—attempts to theoretically or empir
ically prove or disprove media bias—relies on an unwarranted faith in ex
posure. Bias claims assert that political disagreement is fundamentally an
epistemological problem—that if only people had “the facts” they wo
uld see the world\, and share the political interests\, of the claimant.\n
\n \n\n\n\nWhile the idea of “liberal media” bias has played a central
role in modern conservative movement strategy and identity formation\, pr
ogressive and journalistic attempts to respond have too often failed by ac
cepting the claim’s core premise. What would it look like to reject bias
discourse outright? Instead of endlessly debating the ideological and nor
mative slants of various media\, what if we saw bias for what it is—an a
cknowledgment of ideological disagreement\, and an invitation into a disti
nct practice of worldbuilding.\n\n \n\nA.J. Bauer is an assistant professo
r of journalism at the University of Alabama. He holds a PhD in American S
tudies from New York University. He is co-editor of News on the Right: Stu
dying Conservative News Cultures (Oxford\, 2019) and the author of Making
the Liberal Media: How Conservatives Built a Movement Against the Press (C

DESCRIPTION:Telling the story of a local church – how it came to be and
how it has grown and changed over time – is a worthwhile project. Church
histories provide opportunities to record memories\, gather important fac

. Whether your church is forty years old or four hundred\, its story deser
ves to be told!  \nEvery church has a history\, but that does not mean th
ere is only one way to write the history of a church. This roundtable disc
ussion features authors of recent church histories to share their experien
ces – and offer some sage advice – on how they wrote about topics as v

your own church’s history\, or just to hear some great ways Congregation

DESCRIPTION:At Native Sun\, we believe being part of the cannabis communit
y means being part of the larger community\, too. This August\, our team c
ame together with Coast Cannabis for a team beach cleanup at M Street Beac
h in South Boston\, helping give back to one of the neighborhood’s most-
loved outdoor spaces. M Street Beach is part of South Boston’s beautiful
waterfront and is enjoyed by residents\, visitors\, and beachgoers throug
hout the year. For our teams\, it was a great opportunity to step away fro
m the dispensary and spend some time giving back to the community we’re
proud to be part of. Giving Back to SouthieAs a local dispensary in Boston
\, we’re proud to call South Boston home. Our connection to the neighbor
hood goes beyond serving customers — we want to be an active part of the
community and contribute to the places that make Boston special. This Aug
ust\, the Native Sun and Coast Cannabis teams grabbed bags\, gloves\, and
cleanup supplies and headed down to M Street Beach. Together\, we walked a
long the shoreline and surrounding areas\, picking up litter and helping k
eep the beach clean for everyone who enjoys Southie’s waterfront. For us
\, community involvement is about more than one event. It’s about showin
g up\, working together\, and finding meaningful ways to make a positive i
mpact in the neighborhoods where we live and work. A South Boston Cannabis
Community CollaborationThe cleanup was also a great opportunity for two l
ocal cannabis businesses to come together outside of the dispensary.Native
Sun and Coast Cannabis are both part of Massachusetts’ growing cannabis
community\, but collaborations like this remind us that local cannabis bu
sinesses can contribute to the broader community in many different ways. S
outh Boston has a strong neighborhood identity\, and its waterfront is a m
ajor part of what makes the area special. From M Street Beach to Carson Be
ach and Pleasure Bay\, the South Boston shoreline provides a place for the
community to gather\, relax\, and enjoy the outdoors. We were proud to sp
end part of our August helping take care of it. From the Dispensary to the
BeachAt Native Sun\, our goal has always been to create a welcoming\, jud
gment-free experience for cannabis consumers. Whether someone is visiting
a South Boston dispensary for the first time or is a longtime cannabis cus
tomer\, we want everyone to feel comfortable asking questions\, discoverin
g products\, and finding something that works for them. That same communit
y-first approach extends beyond our dispensary doors. Throughout the year\
, Native Sun works with local businesses\, artists\, vendors\, organizatio
ns\, and community groups to create opportunities for people to connect. F
rom local markets and pop-ups to community events and neighborhood cleanup
s\, we’re always looking for new ways to be involved. The M Street Beach
cleanup with Coast Cannabis was another example of what can happen when l
ocal businesses come together with a shared goal. Looking for the Best Edi
bles in Boston?Community is at the heart of what we do\, but of course\, N
ative Sun is also here to help Boston-area cannabis consumers find product
s they love.If you’re searching for the best edibles in Boston\, stop by
Native Sun and explore our selection of Coast Cannabis gummies and other
edible products from Massachusetts cannabis brands. Our product selection
changes regularly\, giving shoppers the opportunity to discover new flavor
s\, brands\, and products. Not sure where to start? Our team is always hap
py to help you explore your options and find something that fits your pref
 erences and experience level.Whether you’re a Southie local\, a Boston r
esident\, or visiting the area\, we want your experience at Native Sun to
 be approachable\, comfortable\, and judgment-free. More Than CannabisThe A
ugust beach cleanup with Coast Cannabis was a simple reminder of something
we believe strongly at Native Sun: being a local business means showing u
p for your community. We’re grateful to everyone from both teams who too
k the time to get outside\, work together\, and help take care of M Street
Beach. We look forward to continuing to partner with other local business
es and organizations throughout Boston and Massachusetts. From community c
leanups to local markets\, brand collaborations\, and neighborhood events\
, there are always new ways to connect under the sun. Find Upcoming Events
at Native SunThe M Street Beach cleanup was just one of the ways Native S
un stays connected with the South Boston community. Throughout the year\,
we host and participate in local events\, pop-ups\, markets\, collaboratio
ns\, and community activities around Boston and beyond. Looking for South
Boston events\, things to do in Southie\, or upcoming events at your local
Boston dispensary? Check out the upcoming events at Native Sun. Our event
s calendar is regularly updated with new opportunities to connect with loc
 al businesses\, cannabis brands\, artists\, vendors\, and members of the c
ommunity. Whether you’re stopping by our South Boston dispensary\, looki

DESCRIPTION:Founded in the wake of war\, the East Nimba Nature Reserve she
lters some of West Africa’s most endangered species. With exclusive\, on
 -the-ground access\, OVERBURDEN follows rangers\, scientists\, and forest
defenders\, including ranger Moses Darpey\, biologist Grace Kotee Zansi\,
chief park warden Catherine Kuku Dolo\, and community leaders Saye Thompso
n and Dada Konkah\, who tend the land\, protecting endangered species and
sustaining livelihoods as a billion-dollar company falls short of promised
support. They are joined by Shadrach Kerwillain\, a Liberian conservation
biologist and Mnqobi Mamba\, a bat scientist from Eswatini\, who navigate
the tangled frontier where mining meets conservation and where memory\, s
cience\, and power collide.\n\nThe film captures their intimate encounters
with the mountain’s extraordinary inhabitants\, from the only true vivi
parous toad found nowhere else on Earth to resilient cave-dwelling bats an
d adaptive chimpanzees. Grace works to reconcile clashing farmers and chim
panzees through coexistence strategies. Moses searches for the rare Nimba
toad on high peaks\, while Mnqobi revisits a cave to see if the bats he he
lped relocate as part of the company’s biodiversity offset program are s
till there.\n\nSeminar on Environmental and Agricultural History (SEAH)\,
is proud to screen the movie OVERBURDEN\, which tells a powerful story of
resilience and transformation in a landscape shaped by industry yet alive
with possibility. Through vivid cinematography and deeply rooted storytell
ing\, the film follows communities and nature enduring and adapting in the
face of relentless global forces. OVERBURDEN celebrates the power of mutu
al aid\, showing how people and ecosystems persist\, rebuild\, and thrive
against overwhelming odds.\n\nThe movie will be opened by Greg Mitmann (Cr
eative Producer)\, who is an award-winning author\, filmmaker\, and teache
r\, whose books\, essays\, and films explore the historical intersections
between science\, medicine\, and the environment. Since 2012\, he has purs
ued research and built partnerships in Liberia that led to the making of t
wo films\, In the Shadow of Ebola (2015) and The Land Beneath Our Feet (20
16)\, and a book\, Empire of Rubber: Firestone’s Scramble for Land and P
ower in Liberia (2021). His current research project\, Fragments of the Fo
rest\, of which Overburden is a part\, investigates the convergences betwe
en resource extraction\, biodiversity conservation\, and emerging infectio
us disease threats in the Upper Guinean Forest of West Africa. His researc
h is funded by the European Research Council.\n\nJoin us on September 24th

DESCRIPTION:Katya Scheinberg\n\nProfessor\nGeorgia Tech\n\nAbstract: In ma
ny applications of mathematical optimization\, one may wish to optimize an
objective function without access to its derivatives (gradients). These s
ituations call for derivative-free optimization (DFO) methods. Among the m
ost successful approaches in practice are model-based trust-region methods
\, such as those pioneered by M.J.D Powell. These methods rely on function
approximations via low degree polynomials and carefully adapt the local g
eometry of interpolation points to balance exploration and exploitation. W
hile relatively complex to implement\, these methods are now available in
standard scientific computing platforms\, including MATLAB and SciPy. Howe
ver\, theoretical analysis of their computational complexity lagged behind
practice. In particular\, it is important to bound the number of function
evaluations required to achieve a desired level of accuracy. Using a mix
of handy concepts from approximation\, sample set geometry\, Lagrangian in
terpolation and linear algebra we systematically derive complexity bounds
for classical model-based trust-region methods and their modern variations
. We establish\, for the first time\, that these methods can have the same
worst case complexity than any other known DFO method.\n\nBio: Katya Sche
inberg is a Coca-Cola Foundation Chair and Professor at the H. Milton Stew
art School of Industrial and Systems Engineering Georgia Institute of Tech
nology. Prior to joining Georgia Tech she held positions at Cornell and Le
high Universities and at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. She attended Mos
cow University for her undergraduate studies and received her PhD degree f
 rom Columbia University.
