 ’s like to live in the new Russia left in its wake. Through interviews s
 panning 1991 to 2012\, Alexievich takes us behind the propaganda and contr
 ived media accounts\, giving us a panoramic portrait of contemporary Russi
 a and Russians who still carry memories of oppression\, terror\, famine\, 
 massacres—but also of pride in their country\, hope for the future\, and
  a belief that everyone was working and fighting together to bring about a

  slow looking and shared discovery. \nSlow looking has become something of
  a popular phenomenon in the world of art appreciation. This practice invi
 tes us to step back from the flickering images of our fast-paced world and
  spend a generous amount of time observing a single work of art\, uncoveri
 ng details that typically go unnoticed. This practice lends itself particu
 larly well to the icons in our collection\, which were originally created 
 for deep\, prayerful contemplation. \nAttendees will break into small grou
 ps and will be guided through the slow-looking experience by members of th
 e Icon Museum staff. Afterwards\, participants will gather back together t
 o share their observations over drinks and light refreshments.

  the Sacred Image is an international symposium hosted at the Icon Museum
  and Study Center that brings together leading scholars from around the wo

 ublished or extensively studied. The conference papers will serve as the c
 ore of a new museum catalogue\, which will offer a new perspective on the 
 history of Orthodox icons in a manner accessible and engaging for art hist
 orians\, museumgoers\, and icon lovers alike. \nThe symposium will be held
  in conjunction with a collaborative exhibition\, featuring masterpieces

 f Living Prayer in Christianity\, a contemplative documentary that explore
 s the inner practices\, sacred iconography\, and daily monastic rhythms of
  Orthodox Christian tradition. Director Jean-Claude Lubtchansky explores t
 he essence of Christianity with the support of icons\, which serve as wind
 ows to the sacred\, making the invisible visible. Their development is clo
 sely linked to theology\, liturgy\, and monastic practice. \nThe film high
 lights three main locations where icons continue to serve as forms of pray
 er within Christianity: Saint Catherine’s Monastery at the foot of Mount
  Sinai\, the Greek monastic peninsula of Mount Athos\, and various sites i
 n Russia. \nThe narration is based on sacred traditional Orthodox sources.
  \nJean-Claude Lubtchansky was a French documentary filmmaker who\, over h
 is long career\, made important contributions to educational television in
  France\, making films on such figures as Galileo and Leonardo da Vinci. H
 is deep interest in esotericism and spirituality led him to make a trilogy
  of documentaries on G. I. Gurdjieff entitled The Seekers of Truth (2005) 
 and a series of films on Shintoism\, Buddhism\, Hinduism and the present f
 ilm on Christianity.
