 e-issue of 'systems/layers'\, the final Rachel's album\, garnered a "Best
New Reissue" on Pitchfork and was called "a truly synthesized mesh of cham
ber music and electronics that sounded like little else…a godfather reco
rd to the nascent (post-classical) genre…" A core ensemble of viola\, ce
llo\, piano\, guitar/bass\, drums\, and percussion was surrounded by many
other orchestral instruments\, tape manipulation\, cinematic sound design\
, found sounds and electronic elements in their studio albums. Rachel's to

ormed a group called The Young Scamels with Jason Noble and Greg King of R

the past year. As a guest artist he has recorded viola with Rodan\, Shipp

DESCRIPTION:Peter Mulvey has been a songwriter\, road-dog\, raconteur and
almost-poet since before he can remember. Raised working-class Catholic on
the Northwest side of Milwaukee\, he took a semester in Ireland\, and imm
ediately began cutting classes to busk on Grafton Street in Dublin and hit
chhike through the country\, finding whatever gigs he could. Back statesid
e\, he spent a couple years gigging in the Midwest before lighting out for

since. \nCaroline Cotter will open\nCaroline’s sunlit songs honor the c

and more information\nWhat Time Is It\, Mr. Fox? will return to the Old Sl
oop Friday\, September 18\, to open the 17th season for the popular Old Sl
oop Presents performing arts series. Miranda Aisling will open the show. \
nNamed after a Victorian children’s game\, What Time Is It\, Mr. Fox? is
a five-person band from Gloucester that plays a genre blending combinatio
n of soul\, folk\, and cabaret. Their original songs marry rich lyrical im
agery with a cinematic sensibility\, exploring themes of love\, spirituali
ty\, sexuality\, and identity. The group’s performances range from intim
ate coffeehouses and living room concerts to music halls and theatrical pr
oductions accompanied by circus performers and animation. What Time Is It\
, Mr. Fox? performed at the first Old Sloop concert in 2009\, and it is al
ways a special occasion when they return. \nMiranda Aisling began teaching
herself guitar while not practicing piano when she was seven years old. A
isling’s original folk songs\, now performed on both piano and guitar\,
combine a frank vulnerability with social commentary. A classically traine
d pianist who threw aside Bach for the Indigo Girls\, Aisling brings the f
eeling of a folk festival with her approachable performances and stories b
oth spoken and sung. She began writing songs at the age of thirteen under
the influence of the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\, which she has attended m
ost years since she was born. \nThe performance will take place at 7:30pm

DESCRIPTION:First Church Friday Folk Coffeehouse presents its first concer
t of the 2026-2027 season featuring Tunes and Tales by Ken and Kenny at Fi
rst Church and Parish Dedham 670 High Street\, Dedham on Friday\, Septembe
r 18\, 2026 at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. There will be refreshments for p
urchase.  Tickets are $20 and are available online at Folk Coffeehouse |
dedhamuu and at the door.  Doors open at 7:00 pm.\nKenny Raskin and Ken C
larkson\, make their debut at First Church. Both Ken and Kenny have had th
eir own musical careers as singer/songwriters\, but revel in the camarader
ie of playing together. Their style is Americana\, with a touch of swing a
s well. While their careers have been different\, their love of acoustic m
usic and singing harmony has brought them together and found them playing
everywhere from living rooms to music festivals. Kenny was 8 years old whe
n his father’s friend Harry gave him a ukulele. He played that ukulele u
ntil he was 11 years old. Then he discovered girls and promptly bought a g
uitar. That ukulele\, however\, was the gateway into a fifty-year plus lov
e affair with playing music on multiple instruments\, including banjo\, ma
ndolin and bass.  In 2018\, Kenny released his debut CD\, MY GREATEST HIT
S! and in 2022 followed it with his second CD\, Peace of Mind. He is also
known internationally as an accomplished actor and theatre clown\, having
appeared on Broadway and with Cirque du Soleil\, as well as on television
and variety stages in the US\, France\, England\, Chile\, Germany and Chin
a.\nKen Clarkson picked up the banjo at age 10 and never put it down\, exc
ept on occasion to paddle wild rivers as a park ranger in the arctic of Al
aska\, to climb trees on the sides of volcanoes in Hawaii\, to protect end
angered birds\, or to lead youth deep into the coastal redwoods of Califor
nia. Along the way he also picked up guitars\, mandolins\, ukeleles\, dobr
os\, and the occasional didgeridoo.  His happy place is somewhere in the
woods teaching wilderness skills to kids\, surfing at dawn\, or playing hi
s banjo to his pet chickens. He is the Auxiliary Program Director at Birch
es School in Lincoln\, MA. Ken is the songwriter\, instrumentalist\, and m
ischief maker behind the group The Radiolarians and also lead banjo\, dobr
o and vocalist for the Boston area  band The Familiar Strangers.\nFirst C
hurch and Parish Dedham Unitarian Universalist was first gathered in 1638
and is located in Dedham Center at 670 High Street. Its lively music progr
am includes choir at Sunday services and the Parish Players theater troupe
\, in addition to our Friday Folk Coffeehouse events.

available at the door. \nAbout Family Dance Hour (6:00–7:00 PM) \nGeared
roughly for ages 4–10 and their families\, this hour is designed as a w
arm\, welcoming launchpad for the main event. It gives younger dancers a c
hance to burn off energy\, learn the core figures\, and build confidence w
ith accessible instruction. \nWe encourage families to stay for the regula
r dance that follows! Younger children can put their new skills into pract
ice during the early sets of the main evening\, dance in tandem with a par
ent\, or simply relax and enjoy the live music. Whether your family stays
for one set of the main dance or the whole night\, you are welcome to make
the evening your own. \nChildren & Families at Our Contra Dance \nWe love
having children and families as part of our contra dance community! Nurtu
ring young enthusiasm for live music\, movement\, and tradition is at the
heart of what we do\, and kids are always welcome to join in the fun. \nTo
keep our events enjoyable and safe for everyone\, we ask for your help wi
th a few basic safety guidelines when children are not on the dance floor:
\n\nParticipate in the dances: Children’s readiness to manage dance st
ructure varies\, so we rely on parental judgement rather than fixed age li
mits. Young dancers thrive in the main sets when they can comfortably foll
ow caller instructions\, sustain focus for a full dance\, and maintain spa
tial awareness around fast-moving adults. Dancing in tandem alongside an a
dult is also an option.\nKeep the floor clear during sets: Because contra
dancing involves fast-moving lines\, unexpected turns\, and backing up wi
thout looking\, active dancers cannot easily dodge someone darting across
the room. Please ensure children refrain from running around the hall or p
laying between the lines while a dance is in progress to prevent trips and
collisions.\nSupervise off-floor play: For their safety\, children shoul
d remain with an adult or in designated non-dancing areas away from the mo
 vement of the floor.

DESCRIPTION:Seeing Irish musical phenomenon Celtic Thunder in person offer
s more than you might expect from a typical concert. The settings and show
manship are akin to a Broadway theatrical production\, with a wealth of mu
sical talent at the center of it. The five singers who make up Celtic Thun
der are all enormously gifted vocalists\, and their blend of Irish folk fl
avors with pop is a carefully concocted brew. But you get something extra
when you see them live in concert. The elaborate stage visuals that accomp
any Celtic Thunder’s performances are an essential part of the proceedin
gs\, leading the group to capture many past productions on CD and DVD. The
combination of musicality and theatricality has made the group an interna
tional sensation since their start in the late 2000s. Every tour is a uniq
ue production unto itself: from 2008’s The Show to 2012’s Voyage\, 201
 3’s Mythology\, and now their 2018 tour\, X. Celtic Thunder Background T
he foresight of producer Sharon Browne first brought Celtic Thunder togeth
er. Browne’s vision combines the talents of five young\, world-class Iri
sh vocalists for a project that is as much about live performance as recor
dings\, and creating a sound that keeps traditional Irish music at its cor
e\, while opening itself up to other influences—including contemporary p
op/rock\, spirituals\, and holiday music. Ryan Kelly\, Damian McGinty\, Pa
ul Byron\, George Donaldson\, and Keith Harkin made up the original quinte
t that formed in Ireland in 2007. On early albums like ‘Celtic Thunder:
The Show’ and ‘Celtic Thunder: Act Two\,’ they established an approa
ch that appealed to a broad cross section of music fans\, and they perform
ed concerts that brought elaborate visuals and bold theatricality into the
mix. Today only Kelly and McGinty remain from the original lineup\, but C
eltic Thunder continues to be an international sensation\, and the group
’s peerless vocals and unbridled showmanship remain on point.

DESCRIPTION:Cherokee Social\nIndie Pop from Denver Colorado with local sup
port from Fleuke \nARTIST BIO: \n“There’s nothing like sipping a Capr
i Sun in present Nostalgia” old waves meet new ways. Feed your impulse.
\nCherokee Social is an Indie Pop duo that sounds like a 5 piece. The lead
singer Julian Navarro started out on drums as early as 3 years old and qu
ickly graduated to bass\, vocals\, guitar\, and pro tools as he grew up in
the Baltimore music scene. Almost being signed 3 separate times throughou
t his career he finally started taking off when he moved to Denver and reb
randed his project from Faceless Ones to Cherokee Social. Shortly after th
is rebrand he picked up guitarist Alex Creighton who brought energetic gui
tar solos and added staged energy to the band. After a few months of playi
ng together they sold out their first headlining show in Denver in January
2024. This trend continued as they started playing with acts like Macy Gr
ay and Fitz and the Tantrums. In summer 2025 they embarked on a 6 week wes
t coast tour where they explored the most beautiful places in California a
nd Washington\, making content\, making fans\, and eventually using the ex
perience to inspire their first EP “The Garden”.  A collection of rev
erb heavy\, meaning packed\, hard hitting indie bangers. The months follow
ing this release have been spent preparing to release a handful of EPs and
singles throughout 2026. These releases will come with a tidal wave of co
ntent and shows around the country which will stand to prove if Cherokee S
ocial can become a household name in modern indie music. \nSOCIAL MEDIA: @

DESCRIPTION:Mastery over Novelty: MUGIC® - a lasting tool for musicianshi
p\n\nThis lecture explores a pivotal shift in the relationship between tec
hnology and the performing arts—from chasing novelty to cultivating mast
ery. Violinist\, composer\, and technologist Mari Kimura presents MUGIC®
(Music/User Gesture Interface Control)\, a groundbreaking motion sensor de
signed to deepen\, not replace\, musicianship. Unlike many fleeting tech i
nnovations\, MUGIC® is a lightweight\, wearable device that captures expr
essive gestures in real time\, converting them into control data for sound
\, visuals\, and interactive media. Designed with performers in mind\, it
 emphasizes expressivity\, accessibility\, and longevity—offering a susta
inable model for integrating technology into the arts\, education\, and th
erapeutic practices. Drawing from over a decade of development and real-wo
rld application—from interdisciplinary curricula to stages such as Linco
 ln Center\, the Venice Biennale\, and Expo 2025 Osaka—Kimura showcases h
ow mastering a robust\, intuitive tool fosters deeper expression and long-
term artistic growth.\n\n \n\nSpeaker Bio: \n\nMari Kimura is a visionary
violinist\, composer\, technologist\, and entrepreneur whose pioneering wo
rk bridges performance\, innovation\, and education. A recipient of the Gu
ggenheim Fellowship\, the Fromm Commission from Harvard\, and a residency
at IRCAM in Paris\, she was awarded the 2025 SEAMUS Award for lifetime ach
ievement in electroacoustic music. The Carnegie Corporation recognized her
as an “Immigrant: Pride of America.”\n\nInternationally acclaimed for
inventing the subharmonics technique\, enabling violinists to play an oct
ave below the instrument’s natural range\, she was hailed by The New Yor
k Times as a “virtuoso playing at the edge.” Her music\, integrating c
ontemporary composition with motion-sensor technology\, has been commissio
ned by ensembles such as the Cassatt String Quartet\, Harvard New Music En
semble and others. An active performer and improviser\, she has premiered
works by John Adams\, Luciano Berio\, and Tania León\, and collaborated w
ith artists such as Jim O’Rourke\, Henry Kaiser and Elliott Sharp. A lon
gtime collaborator on the ERC project involving SOMAX — an AI-improvisat
ion engine developed at IRCAM — she regularly performs at IRCAM's ImproT
ech festivals.\n\nKimura joined UC Irvine’s ICIT program as a Professor
of Music in 2017 and retired in June 2026\, when she was named Professor E
meritus. She continues to teach as a graduate faculty at Juilliard since 1
 998. In 2020\, she launched MUGIC® (Music/User Gesture Interface Control)
\, a compact motion sensor that transforms physical gestures into data for
controlling music\, visuals\, and beyond. MUGIC® is now used in major ve
nues—including Lincoln Center\, the Venice Biennale\, and Osaka Expo 202
5—and at leading institutions such as Harvard\, Juilliard\, and Berlin
’s University of the Arts (UdK).\n\nDuring the pandemic\, Kimura earned
an MBA from UC Irvine’s Merage School and was recognized by the U.S. Hou
se and California Legislature for her achievements in innovation and entre
 preneurship. https://www.mugicmotion.com

DESCRIPTION:City Winery Boston presents The Dead Tongues live on September
23rd at 7:30pm Across the last 15 years\, Ryan Gustafson of The Dead Tong
ues has emerged as one of modern folk’s most distinct voices. As idiosyn
cratic and spectral as the songs have sometimes been\, Gustafson has alway
s tied his visions and verses to the kinds of hooks you tuck away like tal
ismans\, pulled out in case of emergency. Dust\, Unsung Passage\, Desert:
The Dead Tongues’ albums remain some of the more compelling and curious
works in their field on this side of a century. The latest edition to The
Dead Tongues’ catalog\, the song-centric and magnetic Body of Light and
the discursive and wonderfully elliptical I Am a Cloud\, is 16 complete tu
nes split across interweaving and disparate albums.\nTicket URL: https://t
