DESCRIPTION:Aga Khan Program Fall 2026 An Evening With Lecture Series\n\nM
onday September 21st\n\n6 pm in MIT Room 3-133 \nFree and open to the publ
ic\n\nA Red Sea Pan-Culture from Almaqah to Allah: Pagan Temples\, Christi
an Churches\, and the Great Mosque of Sana’a\n\nValentina Grasso\n\nBio\
n\nValentina is Assistant Professor of Medieval History at Bard College. S
he previously taught at The Catholic University of America in the Departme
nt of Semitic and Egyptian Languages and Literatures and at New York Unive
rsity’s Institute for the Study of the Ancient World. She was also an af
filiate member of the European Research Council (ERC) project “The Qur
’an as a Source for Late Antiquity”\, and participated in archaeologic
al projects in Iraqi Kurdistan\, Sicily\, Ethiopia\, and Jordan. Her doctor
al dissertation at the University of Cambridge was published as a monograp
 h\, Pre-Islamic Arabia: Societies\, Politics\, Cults\, and Identities duri
ng Late Antiquity (Cambridge University Press\, 2023). Her work on the Red
Sea\, Central Asia and Sicily in the ancient and medieval period has been
featured in The Journal of Near Eastern Studies\, The Journal of Late Ant
iquity\, Millennium\, The Journal of Ancient Near Eastern History and The
Journal of Medieval Religious Cultures among others. She is currently edit
ing Moving (Indian) Images in the First Millennium: papers from “Indian
Ocean Figures that Sailed Away” an ISAW workshop series\, spring 2022(Br
epols) and finishing her second monograph on a Red Sea pan-culture encompa
ssing aesthetic and religious practices.\n\nAbstract\n\nThe emergence of I
slam in South Arabia called for new communal gathering spaces. Instead of
seeking fresh quarries\, the masons salvaged columns from the ruined Churc
h of Abraha—a sixth-century cathedral constructed specifically to rival
Mecca—and integrated them into the structure of what would later become
the Great Mosque of Sana’a. Excavations at Beta Samati in Ethiopia confi
rm a similar palimpsest two centuries earlier\, during the spread of Chris
tianity in the Horn of Africa. There\, Christian basilicas adapted pagan p
 redecessors\, thereby re-adapting ancient carving techniques\, plans\, and
motifs traceable to South Arabia. This presentation is structured in two
parts. The first examines the historical context of late antique South Ara
bia: early contacts with the Horn of Africa\, the emergence of a unified p
olitical entity under Himyar\, the Aksumite conquest at the time of the so
-called Massacre of Najran\, and\, eventually\, Caliphal rule. The second
part turns to the region’s visual culture and religious architecture\, r
anging from pagan temples and synagogues to churches and mosques. Drawing
on my forthcoming monograph on cross-cultural interaction across the Red S
ea\, I argue for the existence of a Red Sea pan-culture encompassing both
aesthetic and religious practices\, demonstrating that the rise of Islam d
id not abruptly terminate South Arabia’s ancient aesthetic traditions. I
n the Great Mosque of Sana’a\, for instance\, the reuse of pre-Islamic s
tructural and decorative elements and masonry techniques points to a desir
e to amalgamate rather than erase the past. Moreover\, the plans of some e
arly mosques bear a striking resemblance to ancient South Arabian pagan te
mples\, such as the temple of Sirwah\, dedicated to Almaqah.

DESCRIPTION:Showcasing the most important collection of Belgian symbolist
art in private hands—assembled by Charles Hack over more than four decad
es—the exhibition features over 150 major works by Belgian and other Eur
opean artists in their orbit. Shadows and Light charts a world of dualitie
s: dream and reality\, modernism and tradition\, music and silence\, myste
ry and revelation. Together\, these works offer a counterpart and counterp
oint to the sun-drenched landscapes of contemporary neo-impressionism\, as
serting a distinct and rival presence in Belgium.\n\nNew research illumina
tes the complex world of Belgian artists at the vanguard of the internatio
nal symbolist movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centurie
s—a pivotal moment in the development of modern art. Composed of ten “
movements\,” the exhibition unfolds in the galleries as a visual symphon
y with artists engaging with vital issues of modern life\, including quest
ions of faith\, social justice\, historical identity\, and psychological a
nalysis. Building on the historic tradition of Belgian and Flemish art\, t
he exhibition demonstrates how these artists’ works are innovative in st
yle and personal vision\, significantly expanding the language of art.\n\n
Belgian artists represented include: Cécile Cauterman\, William Degouve d
 e Nuncques\, Léon Frederic\, Fernand Khnopff\, Georges Le Brun\, Xavier M
 ellery\, Constantin Meunier\, George Minne\, Armand Rassenfosse\, and Léo
n Spilliaert. With forty-six works by Spilliaert\, the exhibition seeks to
introduce North American audiences to one of Belgium’s most enigmatic a
nd celebrated artists. Paintings by Gustave Moreau\, Dante Gabriel Rossett
i\, František Kupka\, and Koloman Moser\, as well as works from the McMul
len Museum’s collection\, elucidate the rich context of international sy
mbolist art\, in which Belgians played a leading role.\n\nShadows and Ligh
t is accompanied by a catalogue\, edited by Jeffery Howe\, with contributi
ons from American and Belgian scholars Anne Adriaens-Pannier\, Claude Cern
 uschi\, Edouard Derom\, Alison Hokanson\, Howe\, and Oliver Wunsch\, provi
ding contextual background to the time period and the Belgian avant-garde
and offering fresh examinations of Fernand Khnopff\, George Minne\, and L
éon Spilliaert.\n\nOrganized by the McMullen Museum\, Shadows and Light h
as been curated by Jeffery Howe and is underwritten by Boston College with
major support from the Patrons of the McMullen Museum and Mary Ann ’67

DESCRIPTION:At Native Sun\, we believe being part of the cannabis communit
y means being part of the larger community\, too. This August\, our team c
ame together with Coast Cannabis for a team beach cleanup at M Street Beac
h in South Boston\, helping give back to one of the neighborhood’s most-
loved outdoor spaces. M Street Beach is part of South Boston’s beautiful
waterfront and is enjoyed by residents\, visitors\, and beachgoers throug
hout the year. For our teams\, it was a great opportunity to step away fro
m the dispensary and spend some time giving back to the community we’re
proud to be part of. Giving Back to SouthieAs a local dispensary in Boston
\, we’re proud to call South Boston home. Our connection to the neighbor
hood goes beyond serving customers — we want to be an active part of the
community and contribute to the places that make Boston special. This Aug
ust\, the Native Sun and Coast Cannabis teams grabbed bags\, gloves\, and
cleanup supplies and headed down to M Street Beach. Together\, we walked a
long the shoreline and surrounding areas\, picking up litter and helping k
eep the beach clean for everyone who enjoys Southie’s waterfront. For us
\, community involvement is about more than one event. It’s about showin
g up\, working together\, and finding meaningful ways to make a positive i
mpact in the neighborhoods where we live and work. A South Boston Cannabis
Community CollaborationThe cleanup was also a great opportunity for two l
ocal cannabis businesses to come together outside of the dispensary.Native
Sun and Coast Cannabis are both part of Massachusetts’ growing cannabis
community\, but collaborations like this remind us that local cannabis bu
sinesses can contribute to the broader community in many different ways. S
outh Boston has a strong neighborhood identity\, and its waterfront is a m
ajor part of what makes the area special. From M Street Beach to Carson Be
ach and Pleasure Bay\, the South Boston shoreline provides a place for the
community to gather\, relax\, and enjoy the outdoors. We were proud to sp
end part of our August helping take care of it. From the Dispensary to the
BeachAt Native Sun\, our goal has always been to create a welcoming\, jud
gment-free experience for cannabis consumers. Whether someone is visiting
a South Boston dispensary for the first time or is a longtime cannabis cus
tomer\, we want everyone to feel comfortable asking questions\, discoverin
g products\, and finding something that works for them. That same communit
y-first approach extends beyond our dispensary doors. Throughout the year\
, Native Sun works with local businesses\, artists\, vendors\, organizatio
ns\, and community groups to create opportunities for people to connect. F
rom local markets and pop-ups to community events and neighborhood cleanup
s\, we’re always looking for new ways to be involved. The M Street Beach
cleanup with Coast Cannabis was another example of what can happen when l
ocal businesses come together with a shared goal. Looking for the Best Edi
bles in Boston?Community is at the heart of what we do\, but of course\, N
ative Sun is also here to help Boston-area cannabis consumers find product
s they love.If you’re searching for the best edibles in Boston\, stop by
Native Sun and explore our selection of Coast Cannabis gummies and other
edible products from Massachusetts cannabis brands. Our product selection
changes regularly\, giving shoppers the opportunity to discover new flavor
s\, brands\, and products. Not sure where to start? Our team is always hap
py to help you explore your options and find something that fits your pref
 erences and experience level.Whether you’re a Southie local\, a Boston r
esident\, or visiting the area\, we want your experience at Native Sun to
 be approachable\, comfortable\, and judgment-free. More Than CannabisThe A
ugust beach cleanup with Coast Cannabis was a simple reminder of something
we believe strongly at Native Sun: being a local business means showing u
p for your community. We’re grateful to everyone from both teams who too
k the time to get outside\, work together\, and help take care of M Street
Beach. We look forward to continuing to partner with other local business
es and organizations throughout Boston and Massachusetts. From community c
leanups to local markets\, brand collaborations\, and neighborhood events\
, there are always new ways to connect under the sun. Find Upcoming Events
at Native SunThe M Street Beach cleanup was just one of the ways Native S
un stays connected with the South Boston community. Throughout the year\,
we host and participate in local events\, pop-ups\, markets\, collaboratio
ns\, and community activities around Boston and beyond. Looking for South
Boston events\, things to do in Southie\, or upcoming events at your local
Boston dispensary? Check out the upcoming events at Native Sun. Our event
s calendar is regularly updated with new opportunities to connect with loc
 al businesses\, cannabis brands\, artists\, vendors\, and members of the c
ommunity. Whether you’re stopping by our South Boston dispensary\, looki

DESCRIPTION:Breaking Barriers: Harnessing the Potential of the Atom\n\nLec
ture by IAEA DDG Najat Mokhtar\n\nAbstract\n\nSeventy years ago\, in his l
andmark Atoms for Peace address\, President Eisenhower articulated a revol
utionary vision: that nuclear science should transcend its military origin
s to become a force for human progress—to advance health\, strengthen fo
od security\, and foster global prosperity. Seven decades later\, that vis
ion remains as compelling as ever. Yet despite the extraordinary contribut
ions of nuclear science to modern society\, public perception continues to
be shaped by misconceptions that often obscure its profound humanitarian
and technological impact.\n\nToday\, nuclear science underpins innovations
across a wide range of disciplines. In medicine\, radiation-based diagnos
tics and radiotherapy have become indispensable tools in the prevention\,
diagnosis\, and treatment of disease\, improving and saving millions of li
ves each year. In agriculture\, nuclear techniques enhance food security b
y controlling destructive pests\, improving soil and water management\, an
d accelerating the development of climate-resilient crop varieties. Isotop
e hydrology enables the sustainable assessment and management of groundwat
er resources\, safeguarding access to clean water for communities around t
he world. Nuclear technologies also play a critical role in environmental
stewardship\, ranging from tracing pollutants in oceans and ecosystems to
monitoring greenhouse gas emissions and supporting the transition to clean
er energy systems. At the frontier of energy research\, advances in fusion
science are bringing the long-standing goal of safe\, abundant\, carbon-f
ree power closer to reality.\n\nDr. Mokhtar will also examine the challeng
es that continue to limit the full realization of nuclear science’s pote
ntial. Public skepticism\, policy and regulatory barriers\, and persistent
gaps in scientific literacy can all impede the adoption of technologies c
apable of addressing some of humanity’s most pressing challenges. Drawin
g on her experience at the intersection of science\, policy\, and internat
ional engagement\, she will discuss how education\, effective science comm
unication\, international cooperation\, and scientific diplomacy can help
build public trust\, inform evidence-based decision-making\, and ensure th
at the benefits of nuclear science are accessible to societies around the
 world.

DESCRIPTION:Ruochen Lu\nAssistant Professor\, Chandra Family Department of
Electrical and Computer Engineering\nThe University of Texas at Austin\n\
 nDate: September 21\, 2026\nTime: 3:00 – 4:00 PM ET\nLocation: 12-0168\n
Reception to follow.\n\n \n\nABSTRACT\n\nAcoustic waves travel about five
orders of magnitude slower than electromagnetic waves\, so at the same fre
quency an acoustic wavelength is roughly 100\,000 times shorter. That is w
hy a modern smartphone holds more than eighty acoustic filters\, and why p
iezoelectric devices are among the most volume-efficient signal processing
components on chip. This talk asks how far that advantage can be scaled i
 n piezoelectric platforms.\n\n \n\nIn thin film piezoelectrics\, e.g.\, li
thium niobate\, scaling toward millimeter-wave and sub-terahertz frequenci
es runs into two constraints that pull against each other: thinner films l
ose quality factor to surfaces and interfaces\, while higher-order overton
es lose piezoelectric coupling to charge cancellation. The first part of t
he talk covers periodically polarized piezoelectric films\, in which bonde
d interfaces a few nanometers thick are placed at acoustic stress nodes so
that the two constraints can be treated separately. On this platform we h
ave measured resonators above 200 GHz and filters up to 50 GHz. Cryogenic
measurements separate temperature-dependent phonon–phonon dissipation fr
om the temperature-independent interface loss that dominates at present\,
and show that these devices are still well short of the intrinsic limit.\n
\n \n\nAdditionally\, thin suspended films also concentrate energy\, so mo
dest drive powers are enough to produce strong nonlinearity\, including ph
ononic frequency combs generated from a single input tone. The talk closes
with ways the same platform couples acoustics to other domains: optomecha
nical infrared sensing\, acoustoelectric interaction with electrons\, and
piezoelectric resonators that replace magnetics in power conversion. Taken
together\, these devices cover nearly six decades of frequency\, from ult
rasonic transducers below 100 kHz to resonators above 100 GHz\, on one int
 egrated acoustic microsystems.

DESCRIPTION:Cherokee Social\nIndie Pop from Denver Colorado with local sup
port from Fleuke \nARTIST BIO: \n“There’s nothing like sipping a Capr
i Sun in present Nostalgia” old waves meet new ways. Feed your impulse.
\nCherokee Social is an Indie Pop duo that sounds like a 5 piece. The lead
singer Julian Navarro started out on drums as early as 3 years old and qu
ickly graduated to bass\, vocals\, guitar\, and pro tools as he grew up in
the Baltimore music scene. Almost being signed 3 separate times throughou
t his career he finally started taking off when he moved to Denver and reb
randed his project from Faceless Ones to Cherokee Social. Shortly after th
is rebrand he picked up guitarist Alex Creighton who brought energetic gui
tar solos and added staged energy to the band. After a few months of playi
ng together they sold out their first headlining show in Denver in January
2024. This trend continued as they started playing with acts like Macy Gr
ay and Fitz and the Tantrums. In summer 2025 they embarked on a 6 week wes
t coast tour where they explored the most beautiful places in California a
nd Washington\, making content\, making fans\, and eventually using the ex
perience to inspire their first EP “The Garden”.  A collection of rev
erb heavy\, meaning packed\, hard hitting indie bangers. The months follow
ing this release have been spent preparing to release a handful of EPs and
singles throughout 2026. These releases will come with a tidal wave of co
ntent and shows around the country which will stand to prove if Cherokee S
ocial can become a household name in modern indie music. \nSOCIAL MEDIA: @

DESCRIPTION:Originally active between 1973-1994\, Cabaret Voltaire feature
d Chris Watson until 1981 and Stephen Mallinder until 1994. The group were
inactive for 20 years until – with Richard H Kirk as the sole remaining
member – the 2014 performance at Berlin’s Atonal festival. An interco
nnected series of releases – Shadow of Fear\, BN9Drone and Dekadrone –
followed in 2020 and 2021 before Kirk’s untimely passing in autumn 2021
. Mallinder and Watson have stated that there will be no new recordings un
der the name Cabaret Voltaire. \nIn the current climate of social turmoil
and political manipulation\, the prescient work of Cabaret Voltaire contin
ues to be necessary. The sounds\, words\, images and films of the band sti
ll resonate loudly\, continuing to challenge the status quo. \nThe events
in 2025 and 2026 will curate this essential work and to acknowledge the ti
meless energy and to mark the continuing significance and power of what Ca
baret Voltaire achieved. Original members Chris Watson and Stephen Mallind
er are committed to stay true to the enduring vision of Cabaret Voltaire.
\nThe performance will cover the arc of their formidable output – from e
arly experiments\, and the first Rough Trade / Factory releases\, through
the band’s Doublevision video label and into the work with renowned prod
ucers such as Adrian Sherwood and Marshall Jefferson. Stephen Mallinder ex
plains\, “The live set is built from scratch but faithful to the origina
l tracks. Everything has been painstakingly reconstructed with the origina
l technology and processes to build the tracks. But as with all Cabs live
shows there is an element of unpredictable\, the new. Chance meets causali
 ty.
