DESCRIPTION:From R.F. Kuang\, the acclaimed #1 New York Times bestsellin
g author of Katabasis and Yellowface\, comes a wryly humorous and profo
undly moving coming-of-age novel that grapples with grief\, language\, and
culture shock—all set against the backdrop of an unforgettable summer i
n Taipei. College freshman Lily Chen is off to spend the summer in Taipei
at an intensive language program like so many Chinese American students be
fore her\, hoping to connect with the culture she inherited but never full
y understood. But a promising start quickly unravels. Her classes are grue
ling\, her roommate is driving her insane\, and a reckless trip to the hot
springs with a guy she barely knows soon has her classmates viciously gos
siping. She feels adrift\, a foreigner in a country she thought would feel
like home. Then shocking news arrives: Lily’s grandfather has passed aw
ay. The loss forces her to grapple with now-unanswerable questions about h
er family history. As Lily grieves\, she’s drawn into a journey of self-
 discovery—piecing together memories\, stories\, and silences over a seri
es of hilarious and devastating attempts at connection. Taipei Story ask
s: What if the diaspora fantasy of homecoming never comes true? What if le
arning a language can’t bring you any closer to the people you’re tryi
ng to reach? What if you search for your family’s history\, but your fam
ily doesn’t want to share? What if you wait too long to ask the right qu
estions? As Lily struggles for answers\, her summer becomes a poignant sea
rch for understanding—of herself\, her family\, and the meaning of home.

DESCRIPTION:Boston in 12 Massacres Part III\n\nA four part\, darkly humoro
us examination of how f***ed up Boston’s history can be\, and how we use
d to just end each other’s lives all the time. Presented on September 15
th\, Part Three tells the stories of the nation’s most prolific female s
erial killer\, Jane Toppan\, the disaster of the Boston Molasses Flood\, a
nd the horrific Cocoanut Grove Fire in 1942. Local Storyteller and social
 media historian Daniel Berger-Jones recounts a scintillating\, shocking\,
and irreverent narrative of the facts and then discusses them with a panel
of local comedians\, personalities\, and performers. Audience members wil
l have the opportunity to compete against the panel for $2 scratch lotto t
icket prizes\, or to sit passively and drink while being horrified and amu
sed in an evening of history\, ridicule\, ribald toasts\, drinking games\,
singing\, and romping good times. All of this while discussing morbid vio
 lence\, so if you’re easily offended\, or a small and sensitive child\,
this show is not for you. This performance runs approximately 75 minutes.

DESCRIPTION:Since ChatGPT arrived\, surveys suggest that 86% of students u
se GenAI in their academic work. But what do students really think about t
hese tools\, and about their own writing? In this talk\, I share findings
from a large-scale survey (n=342) of University of Illinois undergraduates
conducted in spring 2026. These students occupy a unique moment in histor
y: they learned to write before GenAI existed\, which makes them well posi
tioned to compare their own abilities to a machine’s. The results may su
rprise you. Students report high familiarity with AI but lukewarm trust. N
early half of humanities students say they never use these tools at all\,
while business and STEM students use and trust them the most. When asked t
o compare their writing to GenAI\, students overwhelmingly judged their ow
n work superior\, insisting that their ideas are better. Along the way\, s
peaker John Gallagher discusses research that shows GenAI erodes writing a
bility over time by making us less persistent. Whether you use AI every da
y\, avoid it entirely\, or simply wonder what it means for how we write an
d think\, this conversation is for you.\n\n \n\nThis talk is part of WRAP
‘s series on AI and writing\, supported by a SHASS MITHIC grant.\n\n \n\
nJohn Gallagher is a Professor of English and Faculty Affiliate at the Sch
ool of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
\, where he researches AI writing\, social media habits\, and methods that
combine qualitative and quantitative techniques. He is the author of four
books\, including AI Though the Experts’ Eyes\, available from the Univ
ersity of Pittsburgh Press in September. In addition to student use of Gen
AI\, his current projects include studies of participation inequality in o
nline communities (a select few actually participate online) with implicat
 ions for LLM training data.

value: 0.00})\;\n })\;\n\n\nMahmoud Khalil is a Palestinian born in a ref
ugee camp in Syria. He fled Assad’s Syria at the age of 18 and holds Alg
erian citizenship. He studied computer science at the Lebanese American Un
iversity while working with Syrian refugees in Lebanon\, then served as pr
ograms manager at the British Embassy in Beirut. He moved to the United St
ates in 2022 to attend Columbia University’s School of International and
Public Affairs\, where he became a prominent figure during the student pr
otests against the war on Gaza. Mahmoud lives in New York\, where he conti
nues to fight against the threat of deportation. No Land to Stand On is
his first book.\n\nNo Land to Stand On is a revelatory and powerful testam
ent of protest\, courage\, and imprisonment in America’s deportation reg
ime.\n\n“Are you Mahmoud Khalil?” The question marked the start of a p
olitically charged odyssey that took the Palestinian graduate student and
legal resident from his pregnant wife and home in New York City\, transpor
ted him across the country\, and locked him up in a Louisiana detention ca
mp under threat of deportation. His “crime”: exercising his right to f
ree speech at Columbia University\, where he emerged as a leading voice ag
ainst the slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza. No Land to Stand On is his in
delible account\, the story of a man confronting the reality that he had b
ecome target number one for a lawless regime shredding basic rights.\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:As a follow-up to our September conversation about “feedback
loops\,” this seminar will focus on the particular demands of providing
feedback on writing. When responding to student writing\, it can be diff
icult to provide comprehensive feedback on an essay without overwhelming o
r discouraging your students\, or becoming overwhelmed yourself with the w
orkload. During this discussion\, you will have an opportunity to get cle
arer about the writing norms in your discipline and your current practices
. After reflecting on what’s working with your current feedback loops an
d where you experience pressure points\, we will examine a number of appro
aches to providing targeted feedback. With an eye to maintaining a reason
able and effective workload\, we’ll also review strategies to help stude
nts respond effectively to their own and their classmates’ writing\, wit
 h a focus on the research essay and other long-form writing.\n\nRegister H
