DESCRIPTION:Project Name: Hells Canyon – Sheep Creek  \nProject Dates:
September 13-17  \nThis unique project will take volunteers on an adv
enture from mountain top to canyon bottom! Starting at Windy Saddle Trailh
ead high in the Seven Devils\, the crew will descend an incredible 630
0 feet in elevation all the way to the Snake River in Hells Canyon. From
here\, a jet boat will take us to Pittsburg Landing\, and we'll shut
tle all back to vehicles and head home.   \nThe trail follows the East F
ork of Sheep Creek at its origins just under the saddle\, taking a detour
along the canyon walls and into the Lightning Creek draining\, before
joining back up with Sheep Creek and following it all the way to the Sn
ake River. Volunteers will backpack and work down\, bumping camp along
as they go. There are some great camps along the route\, and this trai
l is used by hunters\, backpackers\, and people day hiking from the
top down or bottom up! This is a great opportunity to experience all
the Hells Canyon Wilderness has to offer\, top to bottom!   \nCheck
out this ITA Trail Spotlight for Sheep Creek!  \nProject information is
subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to r
espond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. S
ee our FAQs\, reach out to your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at tr
ails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Sheep
Creek Trail #53  \nItinerary: This is a five-day project. Car shuttl
e logistics are still to be determined\, and crew leaders will spec
ify meeting time and location in their pre-trip emails. Meeting Sunda
y\, starting work. Bumping camp along\, getting to the Snake River by Wed
nesday afternoon for a Thursday pickup and drop to Pittsburg.   \nFood P
rovided by ITA: No   \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Backpackin
g Projects  \nCrew Leader: Matt McDonagh    \nEstimated Drive Time from
Closest Town: About 1.5 hours from Riggins  \nTrail Map: Click for tra
il map and elevation profile   \nRefundable deposit: $50   \nWhy do I
need to pay a deposit? We've had trouble with people backing out of tri
ps at the last minute which can really affect the productivity of the ov
erall project. By charging a refundable fee\, volunteers are less likely t
o cancel their reservations. Refunds will not be given to volunteers that
do not show up or cancel their reservation. Exceptions will be made for m
edical reasons or unforeseen circumstances. Volunteers can choose to donat
e the deposit to ITA. All donations are tax-deductible and will go toward
s maintaining trails throughout Idaho. If you require assistance in p
aying for this fee\, please contact us at trails@idahotrailsassociation.o
rg and we will waive the cost.   \nDifficulty Rating  \nYou should ha
ve experience with backpacking and be in good hiking condition with broken
-in and tested gear. This is a remote backcountry project\, so injuries
such as sprains and blisters or even extreme fatigue from not being prope
rly conditioned can quickly become a big safety issue. If you are unsure
about the proper gear or about preparing for a trip\, please reach out to
 trails@idahotrailsassociation.org.   \nHike: 5/5 Very Strenuous –
About 14 miles total\; Sheep Creek drops 6300 feet\, with some steep
sections. Generally working downhill but depending on work may have to d
ouble back for short sections of uphill. Carrying all personal gear and
splitting trail tools and group gear. See the linked map for the elevati
on profile.  \nProject Work: 4/5 Strenuous – Lots of trees and brush
expected for repeated saw work. Some heavy lifting or digging. Carrying a
ll personal gear\, bumping camp while we work.   \nVolunteer Spots Av
