DESCRIPTION:Project Name:  Elkhorn Yurt  \nProject Dates:  September
18-20  \nThis is the fourth year that ITA and Idaho Parks and Recreatio
n have partnered to help clear and open trails in the Idaho City Yurt trai
l system!  After big windstorms over the winter\, there are more down tr
ees than typical\, so lots of fun crosscut work is expected! This area is
known for its scenic views and wide variety of recreational activities al
l year long. We'll spend a weekend working mostly on clearing logs and b
rushing with potential for some tread repair and replacing trail signs. I
n the evening\, volunteers have been invited to stay at the Elkhorn Yurt
and take advantage of its kitchen\, fire pit\, and outhouse.  The Yurt
sleeps six\, with lots of tent spots around too. Join us for some glamp
ing\, saw work\, and camaraderie!   \nMore info on the yurts at the ID
PR Yurt Website.    \nProject information is subject to change. Crew l
eaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader
may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs\, reach out to
your crew leader\, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation
.org if you have questions.  \nTrails: Trails TBD based on need after t
he snow melts\, but all accessed from the yurt.    \nItinerary: This
is a weekend project. Crews can stay at the yurt starting Friday afternoon
. Trail work all Saturday. Sunday–leave the yurt clean before heading
out for another trail workday. Head home Sunday afternoon.    \nFood Pr
ovided by ITA:  No    \nGear Packing List: Gear Checklist for Car Cam
ping\, Bring Your Own Food    \nCrew Leader: Ray Arguello   \nEstima
ted Drive Time from Closest Town: About 40 minutes from Idaho City  \nRe
fundable deposit: $25  \nWhy do I need to pay a deposit? We've had trou
ble with people backing out of trips at the last minute which can really
affect the productivity of the overall project. By charging a refundable
fee\, volunteers are less likely to cancel their reservation. Refunds wil
l not be given to volunteers that do not show up or cancel their reservati
on. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or unforeseen circumstance
 s. Volunteers can choose to donate the deposit to ITA. All donations are
tax-deductible and will go towards maintaining trails throughout Idaho.
If you require assistance in paying for this fee\, please contact us at
trails@idahotrailsassociation.org and we will waive the cost.   \nDi
fficulty Rating  \nHike: 2/5 Moderate – Yurt trails are typically an e
asy grade\, with some short climbs up to the yurts. Exact mileage may vary
but hiking 2-5 miles a day with tools and day packs.   \nProject Work:
3/5 Moderately Strenuous – Several windstorms over the winter mean no
shortage of downed trees to saw out this year. Repeated log out and so
 me brushing/tread repair.  \nVolunteer Spots Available: 0 of \nIf there a

DESCRIPTION:Caldwell’s story didn’t always include our beloved Indian
Creek. In fact\, these waters were flowing for decades beneath layers of r
oad and buildings. The city’s initial Indian Creek Festival began in 200
3 as a celebration of when the creek’s first section was uncovered. What
was once a small gathering in a parking lot has now become a two-day fest
ival that spans blocks in our beautifully revived downtown. \nThis is one
of our favorite events of the year\, so we packed the weekend with family-
friendly activities. Some highlights include a Fireman’s breakfast\, old
ies car show\, first responder tug-of-war\, and the crowd favorite: Cardbo

DESCRIPTION:Computing PhD Colloquium\n\nTitle: An Autonomous Nuclear React
or – Who Is Provably in Change?\n\nPresented by: Greg Shannon\, Ph.D.\,
Computer Science\, Purdue University - Laboratory Fellow and Chief Cyberse
 curity Scientist\n\nAbstract\n\nWith the fast-paced advances in small-weig
ht to foundational agentic AI systems\, a fundamental challenge of computi
ng science is how do we encode “the three laws of robotics” in such sy
 stems. Um\, I don’t know… Yet\, at Idaho National Laboratory we’re
working to provably ensure that a human operator can override an autonomou
s controller in a nuclear reactor. \n\nThis talk will lay out how this re
search is about more than the provably correctness of a subsystem. It’s
about finding hard research problems that people care about and will have
distinctive impact. Join us in our conversation about artificial intellig
ence\, human agency\, proofs\, nuclear energy\, and exciting research chal
lenges.\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\nDr. Greg Shannon is a Laboratory Fellow and the
Chief Cybersecurity Scientist for INL’s National and Homeland Security D
irectorate. Protecting the nation’s critical infrastructure systems from
an increasing array of cyber-physical threats requires a strategic approa
ch to advancing scientific methods\, cultivating research initiatives\, me
ntoring researchers\, and advancing national and international solutions.
Greg joined the laboratory from Carnegie Mellon University having served a
decade as the chief scientist for the CERT Division (originally the Compu
ter Emergency Readiness Team) within the university’s Software Engineeri
ng Institute. While in that role\, Greg served as the assistant director f
or cybersecurity strategy at the White House Office of Science and Technol

rce Scientific Advisory Board\, a founding board member of the Women in Cy
bersecurity (WiCyS.org) LLC\, the Department of Homeland Security\, Los Al

DESCRIPTION:Your course has an overall pass rate and an overall average gr
ade — but do all your students experience your course the same way? In t
 his half-day session\, you'll explore a course-specific data report and a
new dashboard which disaggregate course outcomes data to see how outcomes
in your course break down by student group — e.g.\, first-generation sta
 tus\, transfer status\, academic level\, and more. After a short framing t
o set up the data exploration\, you'll dive into your own data\, discuss p
atterns with colleagues\, and reflect on why different groups of students
might be experiencing your course differently — and what you might do ab
out it.\n\nThis session is an opportunity to practice reflective teaching
 — using evidence from your own course so that you can identify concrete
ways to improve students’ experiences. Departmental teams are welcome to
attend together if you'd like to examine a shared course collaboratively.
\n\nBefore you register: have a specific course in mind that you've taught
at least twice in the last five years — you'll be asked to identify it
 during registration.\n\nParticipants receive a $100 stipend.\n---\nEvent D

DESCRIPTION:Caldwell’s story didn’t always include our beloved Indian
Creek. In fact\, these waters were flowing for decades beneath layers of r
oad and buildings. The city’s initial Indian Creek Festival began in 200
3 as a celebration of when the creek’s first section was uncovered. What
was once a small gathering in a parking lot has now become a two-day fest
ival that spans blocks in our beautifully revived downtown. \nThis is one
of our favorite events of the year\, so we packed the weekend with family-
friendly activities. Some highlights include a Fireman’s breakfast\, old
ies car show\, first responder tug-of-war spanning the creek (someone’s
gettin’ wet!) and the crowd favorite: Cardboard Kayak Race. Come see wha
t these folks can do with some old boxes\, duct tape\, a little paint and
 a lot of innovation!

DESCRIPTION:Today\, the legendary band Sleep releases new single “Have S
pacesuit Will Travel” via Third Man Records\, their first new music sinc
 e 2018. In addition\, the band announces a fall North American tour\, as w
ell as releases the first issue of the Sleep Comic Book\, written by bassi
st and songwriter Al Cisneros.\n“Have Spacesuit Will Travel” begins Sl
eep’s first mission without Matt Pike on guitar. The music and art are a
live and after the decades of obstacles that Sleep has overcome\, it is ti
me to move forward and make songs and albums. Al wishes Matt the best on h
is earth bound maneuvers.\nAlongside Cisneros\, the latest incarnation of
Sleep features Dale Crover on drums and Bubba Dupree on guitar. Dale has b
een in some serious bands\, like the Melvins and Redd Kross. That Al would
seek him out makes sense\, an almost elementary choice that probably woul
dn’t raise too many eyebrows. Bubba Dupree\, from the fiercely loved ban
d Void\, hailing out of Columbia\, MD\, is a pick that is not only complet
ely mind-blowing\, but a choice no one would have seen coming. Just the th
ought of Bubba\, who was amazing from the first Void shows on\, playing gu
itar in Sleep is almost too much for the mind to comprehend.\nAl Cisneros\
, Bubba Dupree\, and Dale Crover as a trio looks really good on paper\, bu
t the only way to see if it worked was to get everyone in a room and play.
Al says the answer made itself evident immediately: “The vibe of the fi
rst jam was obvious. It was blue sunglasses-era Iommi in the quality\, and
equally awesome is Bubba is also one of the coolest people I’ve been ab
le to make music with.”\n“Have Spacesuit Will Travel” at no time tri
es to pick up where The Sciences left off. There’s a considerable amount
of new blood in the band\, so imitation\, as Bubba notes\, would greatly
limit the potential of three very unique and talented musicians. That bein
g said\, Sleep answers to an incredible recorded history\, literally decad
es in the making\, so it would not be surprising that Al\, Dale and Bubba
would find themselves composing in the spirit of that which had been estab
lished so long ago. The three of them were able to make an album that can
truly be identified as genuine Sleep music\, yet with a sharpness and agil
 ity to the recordings.
