DESCRIPTION:Walking on Eggshells\nLet’s just say it: things are stressfu
l right now. That’s exactly why I chose this as the first class of the f
all season.\nThis process — painting papers\, tearing them\, cutting the
m\, shaping them into something new — has always helped me let go. To s
ay how I feel without commentary or conflict from anyone else. There’s n
o one to disagree with paper and paint.\nWe paint. We play. We draw. We te
ar. And then\, if by some kind of magic\, we watch it all come together in
to a composition we never expected.\nMuch like life.\nIn this 3-hour sessi
on\, you’ll start by painting your own background papers — no plan req
uired\, just color and mood. Then we tear\, layer\, and collage them into
a striking abstract piece on canvas. No drawing skills\, no design backgro
und\, no “right” outcome — just whatever wants to come through.\n\nW
ant structure?\nI’ll give you 8 beginner-friendly layout guides (like th
e Horizon Line or the Textural Grid)\, so you’re never starting from a b
lank page. Want to ignore all of that and follow your gut instead? Also
great. Either way\, you leave with a piece that’s really yours.\nWhat’
 s Included: Everything. Canvas board\, custom paints\, magazines\, tissue
papers\, real cracked eggshells for texture\, and a stash of unexpected m
aterials from my own studio — no supply list\, nothing to bring but your
self.\n\nHow the Class Works\n\n Paint — We start by making our own cu
stom background and texture papers\, working with color and brushstrokes t
o get our mood onto the page. No planning required.\n Collage — Once y
our papers are dry\, we layer them with magazine snippets\, tissue\, crack
ed eggshells\, and a few surprise textural elements into a modern abstract
  composition.\n Seal — You’ll learn a simple\, archival-safe gluing
and sealing technique so your finished piece is preserved on canvas for ye
 ars to come.\n\nThis is a relaxed\, judgment-free room — quiet enough to
actually think\, supportive enough that nobody’s watching what you make

DESCRIPTION:Texture – Lets You Get All Touchy-Feelie!\nTexture is its ow
n visual language — and once you can speak it\, flat art starts to feel
like it’s missing something.\n\nYou don’t need to be “good at art”
to make texture wall art that stops people mid-scroll. Whether it’s a d
esign carved into paste that dries hard\, or layers of paper and paint bui
lding rough edges next to smooth ones\, this class teaches you the how.\n
\nI’ve been obsessed with texture for years. This class exists so you ca
n experience it for yourself and come to your own conclusions.\n\nNot ever
y piece needs to rely on color to say something. Add texture\, and you get
art that reads from across the room and rewards someone standing close
enough to touch it.\nWhat You’ll Walk Away With\nA hands-on Texture Rec
ipe Masterboard — your personal reference guide for every large-scale t
extured piece you make from now on. You’ll mix your own ultra-flexible D
IY chalk paste (about 70% cheaper than store-bought mediums)\, then test\,
layer\, and build with 12 distinct techniques to create tactile and v
 isual depth.\n\nNote: you’ll leave with a sample board of techniques\, n
ot a finished framed piece — think of it as your cheat sheet for every p
roject after this one.\nThe 12 Techniques\nWe’ll start with the paste re
cipe itself\, then move through tools\, additions\, and removal methods
 — the building blocks of texture. You’ll also get a live demo of the m
ost popular commercial texture products\, so you’ll know exactly when DI
Y beats store-bought\, and when it’s worth just buying the tube.\n\nCome
ready to get your hands dirty (wear clothes you don’t mind getting mess
 y) and spend a few hours with others who also find blank walls boring. By
the end\, you’ll have played through all 12 techniques and have a board
you’ll actually reach for the next time you’re staring at a canvas won
 dering where to start.\n\n \n\nInstructor: Harmony Thiessen\n\nCost: $45\

DESCRIPTION:Have you been dreaming of a space that feels deeply personal\,
cozy\, and filled with old-world soul? If you’re tired of sterile\, pla
in white rooms and find yourself constantly pinning moody library walls\,
vintage botanical illustrations\, and candlelit study spaces\, this one’
 s for you.\n\nIn this three-hour workshop\, you’ll build an Archivist’
s Relic — a dimensional wood-panel piece that looks like it was pulled s
traight from an old university library. Layered textures. Deep\, saturated
color. Real gold leaf. It looks like an antique. It’s made by you\, in
one afternoon.\nPermission to be Dramatic!\nI love this aesthetic because
it gives you permission to be dramatic. There’s no such thing as “too
moody” here — we’re leaning all the way into rich color\, aged textu
re\, and a little bit of gothic romance.\n\nNo matter where you are in you
r experience with art\, you’re welcome here. Whether the last thing you
painted was a school project years ago\, or you’ve never picked up a pal
ette knife in your life\, you’ll have all the step-by-step guidance you
need. High-end design ideas\, broken down into simple\, foolproof steps. A
ll materials included — just bring your imagination.\nWhat We’ll Explo
re Together\n\n The Magic of Antiquing — Simple paper-tearing and ink-s
taining techniques that turn fresh paper into beautifully aged parchment.\
n Fun Texturing — Molding paste and stencils to build raised\, historic
patterns with real touchable depth.\n The Shine of Gold Leaf — Surpris
ingly simple steps for applying (and gently distressing) real metallic gol
d leaf.\n Storybook Layering — Composing small dimensional objects —
 a vintage-style key\, a paper tag\, a wax seal — into one balanced\, eye
 -catching piece.\n\nYou’ll walk out with a real\, finished\, dimensional
piece. Not a half-done project you’ll never touch again. Just you\, can
dlelight\, and gold leaf.\n\nIf you have something you want to bring to ad
d to your work – please do. I will do my best to help you navigate the p
 rocess.\n\n \n\nArt Medium(s): mixed media\n\nInstructor: Harmony Thiesse
 n\n\nCost: $65 - includes all materials\n\nClass size: 16\n\nAge Groups: 1
6+\n\nExperience level: This is a relaxed\, welcoming space at the Whatcom
Art Center. No previous art experience needed — come as you are\, pull
up a chair\, and let's make something that shines.\n\nMaterials to bring:
No need for masks\, gloves\, or special clothing\n\nRegistration: Register
here Harmony Thiessen Art to sign up and pay for this class. Book ASAP
 — fall classes fill quickly\, and spots are limited to keep the room pea
ceful and personal.\n\nP.S. — Know someone who’d love an afternoon lik
 e this? A home-decor lover\, a history buff\, someone who’s always got a
candle lit? Gift certificates are available for birthdays\, holidays\, or
  just because\n\nInstructor Bio:\n\nHarmony Thiessen is a multidisciplinar

There's an old\, simple truth in that: light always finds a way through th

contrast. It's a beautiful mantlepiece on its own\, a natural fit for a Th

things we usually walk right past. \n\nThis workshop is your pre-holiday
sanctuary: no pressure to sketch or paint\, just an invitation to slow dow

important note on timing: If you'd like to forage your own materials (hig
hly encouraged!)\, plan to gather in early October. Pressing and drying ta
kes about six weeks\, so anything you collect now will be perfectly ready
by our November class. Don't worry if you can't get out to gather — I'll
bring a gorgeous buffet of pre-dried natural elements too.\n\nWhat we'll
explore and create:\n\n Double the fun — You'll design and create two c

aster visual balance using organic textures and shapes.\n Tactile materia
 ls — Work with dried flowers\, pebbles\, shells\, birch bark\, twigs\, a
nd grasses.\n Artistic accents — Layer in colorful yarn\, glass tiles\,
and ceramic pieces.\n Seasonal aromas — Add dried citrus peel for a co
zy\, wintry scent.\n Hang it up — Want it on the wall instead of the sh
elf? We'll attach a twine handle so your shadow box can hang.\n The perfe
ct gift — These make beautiful\, personal Thanksgiving tokens for the pe
ople you love.\n\n \n\nArt Medium(s): Foraged Art in Wooden Boxes\n\nInst
