DESCRIPTION:The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents Lewis Hine in Maryl
and\, on display from August 24 through December 18. The exhibition will b
 e accompanied by Lisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso. \nFrom 1908 to 19
24\, documentary photographer Lewis Hine (American\, 1874–1940) traveled
throughout the United States\, using his camera to document child labor o
n behalf of the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). He photographed chi
ldren working in coal mines\, cotton mills\, farms\, tenements\, and city
streets. The NCLC used Hine’s photographs and eyewitness reports to supp
ort its campaigns for labor regulation and reform. His images appeared in
 pamphlets\, posters\, traveling exhibitions\, and lantern-slide presentati
ons across the country. Ultimately\, these searing photographs helped shap
e labor legislation in the United States and established a model for docum
entary photography. \nIn July 1909\, Hine visited Maryland\, photographing
child workers at Bottomley berry farms in Anne Arundel County and at the
 J. S. Farrand Packing Company in Baltimore. Drawn from UMBC’s Photograph
y Collections\, this exhibition explores the places and people behind thes
e photographs. A selection of Hine’s most iconic and enduring images sit
uates his Maryland work within the broader context of his documentary proj
ect. The exhibition also examines how Hine’s photographs functioned as t
ools of visual persuasion\, working in tandem with captions\, pamphlets\,
slogans\, and posters to shape public opinion — and ultimately legislati
on — regarding the changing role of children in the workforce and in Ame
rican society. \nThis exhibition commemorates MD250 and the U.S. Semiquinc
entennial\, exploring themes foundational to the nation’s history\, incl
uding immigration and migration\, the power of documentary photographs\, a
nd social justice. \n\nPublic Programs \nCuratorial tour and opening recep
 tion\nThursday September 17\, 5 p.m. \nPanel Discussion: Food and Labor in
  Maryland\nThursday October 22\, 6 p.m.\, followed by a reception\nThis ev
ent is co-organized with Department of American Studies and the Orser Cent
er for Public Humanities at UMBC. \nClosing reception\nThursday December 3
\, 6 p.m. \nAll public program are free and open to the public. \n\nLisa O
ppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso \nLewis Hine in Maryland is accompanied b
y an installation of two works from artist Lisa Oppenheim’s Spine series
\, in which she appropriates images by Lewis Hine from the Library of Cong
ress. Enlarged to life size\, the photographs depict the backs of adolesce
nt textile workers whose bodies were curved and misshapen by their labor.
Oppenheim has bifurcated each image along the vertical axis of the spine\,
emphasizing the physical impact of repetitive work on the body. Lisa Oppe
nheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso places Oppenheim’s works in dialogue with
a selection of photographs from UMBC’s Lewis Hine Collection\, displayed
with their versos — or backs — visible to viewers. \nIn 2023\, with s
upport from a National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistanc
e Grant\, Special Collections staff undertook a major initiative to rehous
e the Lewis Hine photographs and digitize their versos. The backs of the p
hotographs bear captions\, annotations\, and inscriptions by Hine and othe
rs employed by the NCLC\, testifying to their use in the organization’s
publications and promotional campaigns. Together\, these materials reveal
the many forms of labor documented in Hine’s work and the ways that labo
r is imprinted upon — and remains legible within — the bodies of his s
ubjects. \n \nLisa Oppenheim was born in 1975 in New York\, New York. She
received a BA in art and semiotics from Brown University in 1998 and an MF
A in film and video from Bard College in 2001. She attended the Whitney Mu
seum of American Art Independent Study Program for studio art in 2003. Opp
enheim’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at MUDAM\, The Co
ntemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg (2025)\; Huis Marseille\, Amsterdam (2
024)\, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (2017)\, and the Museum of Contem
porary Art Cleveland (2016). In 2014\, Oppenheim was the recipient of the
AIMIA|AGO Photography Prize from the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Shpilm
an International Photography Prize from the Israel Museum. Her work is hel
d in the permanent collections of The J. Paul Getty Museum\, Los Angeles\,

DESCRIPTION:As in her Tony Award-winning Metamorphoses\, Mary Zimmerman tr
ansforms Greek mythology – here the story of Jason and the Argonauts –
into a mesmerizing piece of theatre. Encountering an array of daunting ch
allenges in their “first voyage of the world\,” Jason and his crew ill
ustrate the essence of all such journeys to follow – their unpredictabil
ity\, their inspiring and overwhelming breadth of emotion\, and their less
ons in the inevitability of failure and loss. Bursts of humor and fantasti
cal creatures enrich a story whose characters reveal remarkable complexity
. Medea is profoundly sympathetic even as the seeds are sown for the monst
rous life ahead of her\, and the brute strength of Hercules leaves him no
less vulnerable to the vicissitudes of love. Zimmerman brings to Argonauti
ka her trademark ability to encompass the full range of human experience i

DESCRIPTION:Recognized as the “mother of African American journalism\,
” Frances Ellen Watkins Harper wrote influential 19th-century abolitioni
st pieces that shaped debate on race\, gender\, intersectionality and citi
zenship. Through her literary work and correspondence in the Black press\,
she built a political voice for African Americans—especially women. Her
journalism bolstered her far-reaching impact as an activist and traveling
orator\; indeed\, few states were left untouched by her courageous voice.

DESCRIPTION:On View: September 4 - December 5 (closed October 23 & Novembe
 r 21 - 28)\nGallery Hours: Tuesday - Saturday\, 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.\n\nThis e
xhibition brings together artists who are curious about the lives unfoldin
g all around us: not just those of humans\, but the many beings\, material
s\, and systems with whom we share the world. The phrase “more-than-huma
n” reminds us that we are part of a vast web of animals\, plants\, micro
bes\, machines\, weather\, chemicals and infrastructure. These artists ima
gine what it might mean to meet those presences halfway and to consider in
ner worlds we can’t fully know. They approach “nature” not as someth
ing distant or pure\, but as it exists now: shaped by technology\, politic
s\, industry\, and everyday life. As a result\, familiar boundaries betwee
n nature and culture\, human and machine\, organic and manufactured begin
to dissolve. Leaning into this complexity\, the artists ask us to reconsid
er what kinship might mean today\, and how we might live more thoughtfully
within a world where even our oddest neighbors are part of the family. Gu
est curated by Lynn Tomlinson and Danielle d’Amico\, Department of Elect
 ronic Media & Film.\n\nReception September 3 following the 6:30 p.m. artis

DESCRIPTION:On View: August 26 - September 26\nGallery Hours: Tuesday - Sa
 turday 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.\n\nIn the Age of Immediacy\, information flashes a
t warp speed\, demanding our attention but providing little in return. Abs
orbing our world is often a thoughtless endeavor. Whether through a camera
\, mirror\, or device\, we are in a constant state of surveilling and bein
g surveilled. Yet we understand that we cannot doom scroll our way to fulf
illment. What is attention without intention? How can we\, instead\, be pr
esent in ourselves? How can we not just look\, but see? The classic child
 ’s game of I Spy demands we stop\, look closely\, and find. Likewise\, t
he exhibition invites us to linger\, to look again\, to notice what seemed
invisible only moments before. The artists create immersive worlds full o
f color\, sound\, texture\, and repetition. They encourage the eye to wand
er through both the micro and the macro. They build worlds full of whimsy
and mystery. The work in Eye Spy observes itself as much as it is observed
. What emerges is joyous clarity and peaceful interiority. There is no doo
m\, there is only discovery.\n\nClosing reception September 17 following t

DESCRIPTION:Join the Jewish Museum of Maryland for a curator-led engagemen
t exploring the art highlighted in Across Life-Worlds: A Family History of
Soviet Jewish Emigration. Curated by Victoria Smolkin and Vlad Smolkin\,
the exhibition places the stories of several Soviet Jewish families who ca
me to Maryland in conversation with the global and national politics that
enabled their emigration. Through presenting a selection of lived experien
ces\, the exhibition explores how American and Soviet Jews\, who began as
distant strangers on opposite sides of the Cold War divide\, came to see e
ach other as family.  \nAt the event\, explore the gallery and gain insig
ht into aspects of the exhibition that both directly and indirectly incorp
orate art and artists. Learn about the ways that art functions to support
and integrate the history of Soviet Jewish emigration presented. Hear how
the curator’s background in the arts has shaped some of the curatorial d
ecisions. \nAbout Across-Life Worlds \nIn the late twentieth century\, mor
e than a million Soviet Jews left the Soviet Union—the largest ethnic em
igration from the USSR\, and the largest Jewish migration since the “Gre
at Migration.” In the late 1980s and early 1990s Maryland became a major
destination for this Soviet Jewish exodus. Across Life-Worlds follows the
stories of these disparate branches of the Jewish family\, tracing their
converging fates during the Cold War and coming to a focus on their reunif
ication in the U.S. The exhibition curators\, themselves children of Sovie
t Jewish emigration\, capture family stories in interviews\, photos\, home
videos\, and objects that reflect the years before their departure and af
ter their arrival—a period that also marks the collapse of the Soviet Un
ion in 1991.  \nAbout the Featured Curator \nVlad Smolkin was born in Kyi
v\, Ukraine\, and emigrated to the United States in 1989 with his parents
and sister\, co-curator Victoria Smolkin. He is an artist\, curator\, and
founding director of CPM Gallery in Baltimore\, where he presents an inter
national roster of contemporary artists\, publishes limited edition prints
\, and partners with a range of curators\, writers\, and scholars. Across
his work\, he creates spaces for collaboration and critical reflection\, a
sking how individuals might see and act within the systems that organize t
heir lives. Smolkin received his MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University
in 2012 and has exhibited nationally and internationally. His artistic an
d curatorial work has been featured in Frieze\, Artforum\, Forbes\, The Wa
 shington Post\, Artnet\, Hyperallergic\, BmoreArt\, among others. He has s
erved as a visiting artist\, critic\, and lecturer at institutions includi
ng Moore College of Art and Design\, Johns Hopkins University\, the Maryla
nd Institute College of Art\, Massey University in New Zealand\, Art Insti
tute of Boston\, and Wesleyan University\, and has taught in the graduate
Art History Department at Georgetown University. \nComplimentary kosher no
n-alcoholic beverages will be served.  \nPlease note that capacity for th
is program is very limited and advance registration is strongly encouraged
. Program tickets are available on a sliding scale.  \nAccessibility: The
Museum building\, including the family and all-gender single-stall bathro

DESCRIPTION:Join The Banner Book Club for an in-person book club meeting\,
featuring Maeve Dunigan\, Author of Read This To Look Cool!\nMaeve Duniga
n has poured a lifetime of effort into seeming effortlessly chill. The res
ults have been … mixed. Nonetheless\, Maeve still believes she’s one p
air of leather pants\, one perfect use of the word “bespoke\,” and one
jar of expensive olives away from self-actualization. She’ll never stop
trying\, no matter how bespoke things get (was that right?). \nWith sharp
wit and unflinching honesty\, Maeve shares her own misadventures―like t
he time she quietly endured a ruptured appendix at McDonald’s so she wou
ldn’t come off as dramatic―and explores the universal desire to belong
. She invites readers into her world of One Direction fanfiction authorshi
p and passive-aggressive yogurt mind games\, detailing the anxieties that
come with living in an age of constant visibility. \n“This book taught m
 e three things: One\, I’m not cool. Two\, I don’t need to be. Three\,
 Maeve is very funny. And four\, I can’t count.” – Eli Grober\, The N
ew Yorker contributor and author of This Won’t Help \n\n\n\n\nThe author
will be with us in person to share insights and reflections on her work.
The event is free with limited seating\, and hosted at Spark Public Space\
 , The Power Plant\, 4th Floor\, 612 E. Pratt Street\, Baltimore\, MD 21202
.\nRSVP here! \nBy registering with your name and email\, you’ll receive
advance notice of the book review date\, ensuring you don’t miss this e
ngaging discussion. The Banner Book Club is your chance to connect with fe
llow readers\, explore Baltimore’s literary heritage\, and engage with t
he trusted journalism that drives positive change in Maryland. \n\n\nUse c
ode BANNERBOOKCLUB for 10% off your book club purchase at this link.\n\n\
 n\nAbout the Author\nMaeve Dunigan\, originally from Baltimore\, MD\, is a
writer\, comedian\, and frequent contributor to The New Yorker. Her work
 has appeared on NPR’s Selected Shorts\, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency\
 , Reductress\, Mic\, and Mountain Gazette.\n\nAbout the Moderator\nCayla H
arris is the obituary writer for The Baltimore Banner. Before coming to Ba
ltimore\, she spent four years in Austin\, Texas\, covering state politics
for the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News. She also previous
ly covered New York politics for the Albany Times Union.

DESCRIPTION:**THIS PROGRAM IS SOLD OUT** \n\n \n\nStep into the vibrant st
reets of the 1970s Bronx and witness the exact moment a global movement be
gan. Birth of a Culture gives you a front-row seat to the origins of hip-h
op\, told through the firsthand experiences of Grandmaster Flash—one of
the founding pioneers who helped build the culture from the ground up.\n\n
\n\nWhen you read this book\, you feel the pulse of the neighborhood park
s\, hear the scratch of the vinyl\, and experience the raw energy of a com
munity turning its daily struggles into a revolutionary art form. This is
not just a collection of dates and facts. It is a deeply personal narrativ
e written by Grandmaster Flash and coauthor Robert “Scoop” Jackson tha
t brings you into the rooms and onto the streets where music changed forev
er.\n\n\nThis book cuts through the myths to deliver an authentic\, chrono
logical history—bringing you alongside Grandmaster Flash as he invents t
he groundbreaking Quik Mix Theory and helps transform a landscape of socia
l unrest into a global movement. With turntables and microphones\, the you
ng innovator sparked a cultural explosion that quickly swept the world.\n\
n \n\nMore than a timeline of musical milestones\, this Birth of a Culture
explores the profound power of community\, resilience\, and unapologetic
creativity. The challenges and triumphs detailed within these pages mirror
the social issues we still face\, proving that music remains our most vit
al tool for connection and change.\n\n \n\nWhether you are a lifelong hip-
hop fan\, a dedicated music historian\, or simply someone who loves powerf
ul stories of cultural triumph\, this book belongs on your shelf. Once you
’ve read Birth of a Culture\, you can say you know the undeniable heartb
eat of hip-hop's true origins.\n\n \n\nGrandmaster Flash will be joined in
conversation by Karsonya Wise Whitehead\, host of Today with Dr. Kaye on
 WEAA 88.9 FM.\n\n \n\nAbout the Author: \n\nGrandmaster Flash\, born Josep
h Saddler on January 1\, 1957\, is recognized as one of Hip Hop’s archit
ects and builders of the culture\, the first DJ to make the turntable a mu
sical instrument by the way of his Quik Mix Theory formula and homed devic
es. Grandmaster Flash’s technical innovations and artistic contributions
have earned him numerous accolades. His impact on the music industry exte
nds beyond his own successful career\, as his innovative formula and sound
s were translated to sound producing technologies and have inspired genera
tions of DJs\, producers and hip-hop artists to push the boundaries of cre
ativity.\n\n \n\nAbout the Moderator: \n\nKarsonya Wise Whitehead is the h
ost of Today with Dr. Kaye on WEAA 88.9 FM. She is the founding director
