Kuhn Library Gallery presents Lewis Hine in Maryl and\, on display from August 24 through December 18. The exhibition will b e accompanied by Lisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso. \nFrom 1908 to 19 24\, documentary photographer Lewis Hine (American\, 1874–1940) traveled throughout the United States\, using his camera to document child labor o n behalf of the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). He photographed chi ldren working in coal mines\, cotton mills\, farms\, tenements\, and city streets. The NCLC used Hine’s photographs and eyewitness reports to supp ort its campaigns for labor regulation and reform. His images appeared in pamphlets\, posters\, traveling exhibitions\, and lantern-slide presentati ons across the country. Ultimately\, these searing photographs helped shap e labor legislation in the United States and established a model for docum entary photography. \nIn July 1909\, Hine visited Maryland\, photographing child workers at Bottomley berry farms in Anne Arundel County and at the J. S. Farrand Packing Company in Baltimore. Drawn from UMBC’s Photograph y Collections\, this exhibition explores the places and people behind thes e photographs. A selection of Hine’s most iconic and enduring images sit uates his Maryland work within the broader context of his documentary proj ect. Enlarged to life size\, the photographs depict the backs of adolesce nt textile workers whose bodies were curved and misshapen by their labor. Oppenheim has bifurcated each image along the vertical axis of the spine\, emphasizing the physical impact of repetitive work on the body. Lisa Oppe nheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso places Oppenheim’s works in dialogue with a selection of photographs from UMBC’s Lewis Hine Collection\, displayed with their versos — or backs — visible to viewers. \nIn 2023\, with s upport from a National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistanc e Grant\, Special Collections staff undertook a major initiative to rehous e the Lewis Hine photographs and digitize their versos. The backs of the p hotographs bear captions\, annotations\, and inscriptions by Hine and othe rs employed by the NCLC\, testifying to their use in the organization’s publications and promotional campaigns. Together\, these materials reveal the many forms of labor documented in Hine’s work and the ways that labo r is imprinted upon — and remains legible within — the bodies of his s ubjects. \n \nLisa Oppenheim was born in 1975 in New York\, New York. She received a BA in art and semiotics from Brown University in 1998 and an MF A in film and video from Bard College in 2001. She attended the Whitney Mu seum of American Art Independent Study Program for studio art in 2003. Through presenting a selection of lived experien ces\, the exhibition explores how American and Soviet Jews\, who began as distant strangers on opposite sides of the Cold War divide\, came to see e ach other as family.  \nAt the event\, explore the gallery and gain insig ht into aspects of the exhibition that both directly and indirectly incorp orate art and artists. Learn about the ways that art functions to support and integrate the history of Soviet Jewish emigration presented. Hear how the curator’s background in the arts has shaped some of the curatorial d ecisions. \nAbout Across-Life Worlds \nIn the late twentieth century\, mor e than a million Soviet Jews left the Soviet Union—the largest ethnic em igration from the USSR\, and the largest Jewish migration since the “Gre at Migration.” In the late 1980s and early 1990s Maryland became a major destination for this Soviet Jewish exodus. Across Life-Worlds follows the stories of these disparate branches of the Jewish family\, tracing their converging fates during the Cold War and coming to a focus on their reunif ication in the U.S. The exhibition curators\, themselves children of Sovie t Jewish emigration\, capture family stories in interviews\, photos\, home videos\, and objects that reflect the years before their departure and af ter their arrival—a period that also marks the collapse of the Soviet Un ion in 1991.  \nAbout the Featured Curator \nVlad Smolkin was born in Kyi v\, Ukraine\, and emigrated to the United States in 1989 with his parents and sister\, co-curator Victoria Smolkin. He is an artist\, curator\, and founding director of CPM Gallery in Baltimore\, where he presents an inter national roster of contemporary artists\, publishes limited edition prints \, and partners with a range of curators\, writers\, and scholars. Across his work\, he creates spaces for collaboration and critical reflection\, a sking how individuals might see and act within the systems that organize t heir lives. Smolkin received his MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2012 and has exhibited nationally and internationally. His artistic an d curatorial work has been featured in Frieze\, Artforum\, Forbes\, The Wa shington Post\, Artnet\, Hyperallergic\, BmoreArt\, among others. He has s erved as a visiting artist\, critic\, and lecturer at institutions includi ng Moore College of Art and Design\, Johns Hopkins University\, the Maryla nd Institute College of Art\, Massey University in New Zealand\, Art Insti tute of Boston\, and Wesleyan University\, and has taught in the graduate Art History Department at Georgetown University. \nComplimentary kosher no n-alcoholic beverages will be served.  \nPlease note that capacity for th is program is very limited and advance registration is strongly encouraged .
