DESCRIPTION:The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents Lewis Hine in Maryl
and\, on display from August 24 through December 18. The exhibition will b
 e accompanied by Lisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso. \nFrom 1908 to 19
24\, documentary photographer Lewis Hine (American\, 1874–1940) traveled
throughout the United States\, using his camera to document child labor o
n behalf of the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). He photographed chi
ldren working in coal mines\, cotton mills\, farms\, tenements\, and city
streets. The NCLC used Hine’s photographs and eyewitness reports to supp
ort its campaigns for labor regulation and reform. His images appeared in
 pamphlets\, posters\, traveling exhibitions\, and lantern-slide presentati
ons across the country. Ultimately\, these searing photographs helped shap
e labor legislation in the United States and established a model for docum
entary photography. \nIn July 1909\, Hine visited Maryland\, photographing
child workers at Bottomley berry farms in Anne Arundel County and at the
 J. S. Farrand Packing Company in Baltimore. Drawn from UMBC’s Photograph
y Collections\, this exhibition explores the places and people behind thes
e photographs. A selection of Hine’s most iconic and enduring images sit
uates his Maryland work within the broader context of his documentary proj
ect. The exhibition also examines how Hine’s photographs functioned as t
ools of visual persuasion\, working in tandem with captions\, pamphlets\,
slogans\, and posters to shape public opinion — and ultimately legislati
on — regarding the changing role of children in the workforce and in Ame
rican society. \nThis exhibition commemorates MD250 and the U.S. Semiquinc
entennial\, exploring themes foundational to the nation’s history\, incl
uding immigration and migration\, the power of documentary photographs\, a
nd social justice. \n\nPublic Programs \nCuratorial tour and opening recep
 tion\nThursday September 17\, 5 p.m. \nPanel Discussion: Food and Labor in
  Maryland\nThursday October 22\, 6 p.m.\, followed by a reception\nThis ev
ent is co-organized with Department of American Studies and the Orser Cent
er for Public Humanities at UMBC. \nClosing reception\nThursday December 3
\, 6 p.m. \nAll public program are free and open to the public. \n\nLisa O
ppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso \nLewis Hine in Maryland is accompanied b
y an installation of two works from artist Lisa Oppenheim’s Spine series
\, in which she appropriates images by Lewis Hine from the Library of Cong
ress. Enlarged to life size\, the photographs depict the backs of adolesce
nt textile workers whose bodies were curved and misshapen by their labor.
Oppenheim has bifurcated each image along the vertical axis of the spine\,
emphasizing the physical impact of repetitive work on the body. Lisa Oppe
nheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso places Oppenheim’s works in dialogue with
a selection of photographs from UMBC’s Lewis Hine Collection\, displayed
with their versos — or backs — visible to viewers. \nIn 2023\, with s
upport from a National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistanc
e Grant\, Special Collections staff undertook a major initiative to rehous
e the Lewis Hine photographs and digitize their versos. The backs of the p
hotographs bear captions\, annotations\, and inscriptions by Hine and othe
rs employed by the NCLC\, testifying to their use in the organization’s
publications and promotional campaigns. Together\, these materials reveal
the many forms of labor documented in Hine’s work and the ways that labo
r is imprinted upon — and remains legible within — the bodies of his s
ubjects. \n \nLisa Oppenheim was born in 1975 in New York\, New York. She
received a BA in art and semiotics from Brown University in 1998 and an MF
A in film and video from Bard College in 2001. She attended the Whitney Mu
seum of American Art Independent Study Program for studio art in 2003. Opp
enheim’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at MUDAM\, The Co
ntemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg (2025)\; Huis Marseille\, Amsterdam (2
024)\, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (2017)\, and the Museum of Contem
porary Art Cleveland (2016). In 2014\, Oppenheim was the recipient of the
AIMIA|AGO Photography Prize from the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Shpilm
an International Photography Prize from the Israel Museum. Her work is hel
d in the permanent collections of The J. Paul Getty Museum\, Los Angeles\,

DESCRIPTION:As in her Tony Award-winning Metamorphoses\, Mary Zimmerman tr
ansforms Greek mythology – here the story of Jason and the Argonauts –
into a mesmerizing piece of theatre. Encountering an array of daunting ch
allenges in their “first voyage of the world\,” Jason and his crew ill
ustrate the essence of all such journeys to follow – their unpredictabil
ity\, their inspiring and overwhelming breadth of emotion\, and their less
ons in the inevitability of failure and loss. Bursts of humor and fantasti
cal creatures enrich a story whose characters reveal remarkable complexity
. Medea is profoundly sympathetic even as the seeds are sown for the monst
rous life ahead of her\, and the brute strength of Hercules leaves him no
less vulnerable to the vicissitudes of love. Zimmerman brings to Argonauti
ka her trademark ability to encompass the full range of human experience i

DESCRIPTION:On View: September 4 - December 5 (closed October 23 & Novembe
 r 21 - 28)\nGallery Hours: Tuesday - Saturday\, 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.\n\nThis e
xhibition brings together artists who are curious about the lives unfoldin
g all around us: not just those of humans\, but the many beings\, material
s\, and systems with whom we share the world. The phrase “more-than-huma
n” reminds us that we are part of a vast web of animals\, plants\, micro
bes\, machines\, weather\, chemicals and infrastructure. These artists ima
gine what it might mean to meet those presences halfway and to consider in
ner worlds we can’t fully know. They approach “nature” not as someth
ing distant or pure\, but as it exists now: shaped by technology\, politic
s\, industry\, and everyday life. As a result\, familiar boundaries betwee
n nature and culture\, human and machine\, organic and manufactured begin
to dissolve. Leaning into this complexity\, the artists ask us to reconsid
er what kinship might mean today\, and how we might live more thoughtfully
within a world where even our oddest neighbors are part of the family. Gu
est curated by Lynn Tomlinson and Danielle d’Amico\, Department of Elect
 ronic Media & Film.\n\nReception September 3 following the 6:30 p.m. artis
t talk with landscape architects Sophie Maguire and Meg Baldwin.\n\nPanel

DESCRIPTION:On View: August 26 - September 26\nGallery Hours: Tuesday - Sa
 turday 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.\n\nIn the Age of Immediacy\, information flashes a
t warp speed\, demanding our attention but providing little in return. Abs
orbing our world is often a thoughtless endeavor. Whether through a camera
\, mirror\, or device\, we are in a constant state of surveilling and bein
g surveilled. Yet we understand that we cannot doom scroll our way to fulf
illment. What is attention without intention? How can we\, instead\, be pr
esent in ourselves? How can we not just look\, but see? The classic child
 ’s game of I Spy demands we stop\, look closely\, and find. Likewise\, t
he exhibition invites us to linger\, to look again\, to notice what seemed
invisible only moments before. The artists create immersive worlds full o
f color\, sound\, texture\, and repetition. They encourage the eye to wand
er through both the micro and the macro. They build worlds full of whimsy
and mystery. The work in Eye Spy observes itself as much as it is observed
. What emerges is joyous clarity and peaceful interiority. There is no doo
m\, there is only discovery.\n\nClosing reception September 17 following t
he MFA research presentatons which features five alumni/current MFA studen

 n \nRetriever Essentials is turning 10! To mark this milestone\, we’re h
osting an anniversary event to celebrate what happens when a community com
es together to care for its own. \n \nFor the past decade\, our mission ha
s been simple yet vital: to immediately relieve the burden of food insecur
ity for UMBC members and connect them to ongoing support networks. That wo
rk hasn’t happened in a vacuum. It has been powered by the heartbeat of
 hundreds of volunteers\, founders\, donors\, campus partners\, and advocat
es who stepped up to care for one another.  \n \nWhat to Expect: \n\nHono
ring Our Roots: Hear inspiring stories from some of our original founders.
\nStudent Voices: Hear from current students actively leading and benefiti
ng from our programs.\nThe Next Chapter: Get an exciting first look at how
we are expanding our services to better support our community.\nCommunity
& Connection: Connect with the very people (volunteers\, staff\, donors\,
and partners) who made the last 10 years possible.\n\nWhether you’ve vo
 lunteered\, donated\, partnered\, or simply cheered us on\, you are a part
of this story. Come as you are\, celebrate how far we’ve come\, and dre
am with us about where we’re going next! \n \nThis event is open for ful
l participation by all individuals regardless of race\, color\, religion\,
sex\, national origin\, or any other protected category under applicable
federal law\, state law\, and the university’s nondiscrimination policy.

DESCRIPTION:OM is a host of the Silent Book Club. Bring a book\, grab a bi

\nThe event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with introductions and eating/drinking.
The silent reading hour will run 7:30-8:30 p.m. Afterward\, feel free to
stick around for mingling or more reading. \nAbout Silent Book Club \nSile
nt Book Club is a global community of readers and introverts\, with 300 ch
apters around the world led by local volunteers. SBC members gather in per
son and online to read together in quiet camaraderie. \nSilent Book Club s
tarted in 2012 with a couple of friends—Guinevere de la Mare and Laura G
luhanich—reading in companionable silence at their neighborhood bar in S
an Francisco. They loved books\, and reading with friends\, but most of th
eir previous attempts at book clubs had fizzled out. \nOften with traditio
nal book clubs there’s the scramble to finish the assigned book\, and
the pressure to have something smart to say. Wouldn’t it be great to h
ave a book club where you could just enjoy books\, friends\, and wine—wi
thout any homework? At Silent Book Club\, there’s no assigned reading.

t about the craft of poetry! We’re joined by Aldo Amparán to discuss th
eir new collection\, THE HOUSE HAS TEETH. Aldo is in conversation with Emi
ly Holland\, poet and editor of Poet Lore\, America’s oldest poetry jour
nal. \nRSVP below to receive login information (our virtual events are hel
d via Zoom). FREE and open to the public\, all times Eastern. \nWe encoura
ge you to order a copy of the book from your local\, independent bookselle
r or online from the publisher » \n\nAldo Amparán is the author of Broth
er Sleep\, a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Poetry in 2023
. They have received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts
& CantoMundo. Born & raised in the border cities of El Paso\, TX\, USA\, &

he Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-Day\, Best New Poets\, Gulf Coast\,
Kenyon Review Online\, New England Review\, Ploughshares\, Poetry Magazin
e\, & elsewhere. \n\nAbout THE HOUSE HAS TEETH\nAldo Amparán returns with
a collection of surreal borderland poems about the queer and Latinx body
as a site of politicization. Haunted by the author’s personal ghosts of
violent trauma and the insidious pain of refusing to heal\, THE HOUSE HAS
TEETH (September 2026\, Alice James Books) asks whether it’s possible to
unknow—and transcend—the nightmares that creep around the edges of ou
r adult psyches. Amparán writes with tenderness and impressive vulnerabil
ity about unlearning gendered cultural expectations of cruelty and brutali
ty in order to break patterns of aggression and finally heal the shattered
self. \nInfluenced by horror films\, ghost stories\, and the fever dream
of violence on TV screens and in the media\, THE HOUSE HAS TEETH is a poet
ic haunting about how to survive childhood assault in order to embrace lov
 e. \n\nIf you need an accommodation for this event\, please contact us at
