DESCRIPTION:Bring your characters to life on the page.\nWhen writing a nov
el\, we must know our primary characters inside and out. We need to unders
tand their desires\, motivations\, and frustrations\, their histories and
their futures. This workshop will focus on the development of authentic ch
aracters. Participants will examine character as both autonomous and resid
ing within the context of the other novelistic elements\, and we will exam
ine the challenge of creating and integrating these various elements into
a cohesive and credible whole. Participants will explore the main characte
r(s) in their novels-in-progress. \n\nLearn at your own pace: This worksh
op will take place over Wet Ink\, which is an asynchronous creative writi
ng platform. The instructor will post a lesson and assignment at the begin
ning of each week\, and participants can log in and read the lessons/post
assignments/comment on other classmates’ work at their convenience. Shor
tly before the start date\, participants will receive an invite from Wet I
nk to create their login info and access the class. Please check your spam
if you don’t see it. \n\nIn this workshop you’ll learn:\n\nYour chara
 cter’s past and future\nYour character’s motivations\nHow the plot wil
l bring about your character’s arc\nHow to reveal your character on the
 page\n\nTime requirements\n\n3-5 hrs/week\n\nMaterials\n\nAll reading mate

DESCRIPTION:Discover how creative constraints can unlock surprising new po
ssibilities in your writing.\nIn this four-week generative workshop\, we w
ill explore how playing with time\, form\, and omission can change stories
and move them beyond the familiar. Through close reading\, discussion\, a
nd in-class exercises\, participants will experiment with techniques to pl
ay with their stories. By the end of the workshop\, participants will have
several new drafts as well as a toolkit of exercises and strategies for f
uture work. Participants should come prepared to write and to read a small
selection of flash fiction between sessions\; no advance preparation is r
equired for the first class. \n\nLearn at your own pace: This workshop wi

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Michael Thorpe\, Assistant Research Scientis
t\, the University of Maryland\, NASA Goddard\, CRESST\, Planetary Environ
ments Lab\n\nAbstract: Sediments and sedimentary rocks record a comple
x history from their generation to deposition\, a framework broadly termed
source to sink. On Earth\, sediment composition is initially governed by
provenance but is progressively modified during transport through the rout
ing system by chemical and physical weathering\, sorting\, mixing\, and ea
rly- to late-stage diagenesis. These processes are also fundamentally coup
led to environmental conditions such as temperature and precipitation\, un
derscoring the power of sediments and sedimentary rocks as archives of pas
t surface climates and the regulation of atmospheric CO₂ through the geo
logical carbon cycle. Building on lessons learned from mafic terrains on E
arth\, we can extend this source to sink framework to Mars\, which preserv
es an exceptionally rich sedimentary record. The Mars Science Laboratory C
 uriosity rover\, for example\, has explored more than 400 m of basin-fill
 stratigraphy\, revealing sedimentological\, geochemical\, and mineralogica
l evidence for ancient fluvio-deltaic and lacustrine environments shaped b
y complex interactions between surface and groundwater systems. Looking ah
ead\, a source to sink perspective grounded in comparative planetology pro
vides a critical framework for interpreting planetary sedimentary records\
, guiding the scientific value of returned samples\, and informing site se
lection and environmental context for future missions and eventually astro
naut exploration.\n\nBiography: Dr. Michael Thorpe is an Assistant Res
earch Scientist at the University of Maryland and NASA’s Goddard Space F
light Center under the CRESST II contract. Mike graduated from Towson Univ
ersity with a B.S. in geology and continued his studies completing a M.S.
and Ph.D. at Stony Brook University. His work focuses on understanding the
history of sediments from source to sink\, both in environments on Earth
and Mars. Mike uses geochemistry and mineralogy as his tools to unravel ho
w water and wind have shaped the surface of sedimentary environments in ou
r solar system. He explores sedimentary environments around the globe and
also loves to work with the samples back in the lab. Mike also works with
the Mars Science Laboratory team and explores the mineralogy of Gale crate
r with the CheMin instrument on board the Curiosity rover. Additionally\,
Mike helps as a member of the Mars Sample Return Science Group and the Int
ernation Mars Exploration Working Group\, leading the Analogue and Geology
teams. Outside of his passion for research\, he loves to talk about Mars
and science with the community\, engaging in outreach events as “Geologi
st Mike.” In addition to his professional interest\, Mike thoroughly enj
oys time with the family\, hiking the local trails with his pup\, Kona\, c
ooking dinners for family and friends\, and playing or watching all sports
