The exhibition will b e accompanied by Lisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso. \nFrom 1908 to 19 24\, documentary photographer Lewis Hine (American\, 1874–1940) traveled throughout the United States\, using his camera to document child labor o n behalf of the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). He photographed chi ldren working in coal mines\, cotton mills\, farms\, tenements\, and city streets. The NCLC used Hine’s photographs and eyewitness reports to supp ort its campaigns for labor regulation and reform. His images appeared in pamphlets\, posters\, traveling exhibitions\, and lantern-slide presentati ons across the country. Ultimately\, these searing photographs helped shap e labor legislation in the United States and established a model for docum entary photography. \nIn July 1909\, Hine visited Maryland\, photographing child workers at Bottomley berry farms in Anne Arundel County and at the J. S. Farrand Packing Company in Baltimore. Drawn from UMBC’s Photograph y Collections\, this exhibition explores the places and people behind thes e photographs. A selection of Hine’s most iconic and enduring images sit uates his Maryland work within the broader context of his documentary proj ect. Enlarged to life size\, the photographs depict the backs of adolesce nt textile workers whose bodies were curved and misshapen by their labor. Oppenheim has bifurcated each image along the vertical axis of the spine\, emphasizing the physical impact of repetitive work on the body. Lisa Oppe nheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso places Oppenheim’s works in dialogue with a selection of photographs from UMBC’s Lewis Hine Collection\, displayed with their versos — or backs — visible to viewers. \nIn 2023\, with s upport from a National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistanc e Grant\, Special Collections staff undertook a major initiative to rehous e the Lewis Hine photographs and digitize their versos. The backs of the p hotographs bear captions\, annotations\, and inscriptions by Hine and othe rs employed by the NCLC\, testifying to their use in the organization’s publications and promotional campaigns. Together\, these materials reveal the many forms of labor documented in Hine’s work and the ways that labo r is imprinted upon — and remains legible within — the bodies of his s ubjects. \n \nLisa Oppenheim was born in 1975 in New York\, New York. She received a BA in art and semiotics from Brown University in 1998 and an MF A in film and video from Bard College in 2001. Composed in 1 947 through 1949\, the technically demanding Sonata was premiered by Vladi mir Horowitz in Havana and quickly entered the 20th century piano repertoi re. \nPalumbo says\, “I was raised with statements such as ‘great tech nique fits one’s unique physical structure and is governed by sincere ar tistry that is derived solely from the score.’ When one goes against the music\, the body protests and injury occurs. 20th and 21st century music creates unique problems in this light\, as much of it stacks dissonance wi th dissonance\, or resolves dissonance with ‘lesser’ dissonance. As ma ny students begin to understand the underlying musical implications of thi s 20th century music\, much of the physicality has to be relearned. The go al: to refine and keep the musical intention\, while releasing the tension in a healthy manner. This lecture-recital seeks to demonstrate methods fo r this type of musicianship using Barber Piano Sonata as a case example. ” \n\nAccomplished pianist and teacher Matthew J. Palumbo made his solo debut with the Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra at age thirteen as the winne r of the Seattle Young Artists Music Festival. Kuhn Library Gallery presents an Opening Receptio n for the exhibition Lewis Hine in Maryland\, on display from August 24 th rough December 18. The exhibition will be accompanied by Lisa Oppenheim/Le wis Hine: Spine/Verso. \nFrom 1908 to 1924\, documentary photographer Lewi s Hine (American\, 1874–1940) traveled throughout the United States\, us ing his camera to document child labor on behalf of the National Child Lab or Committee (NCLC). He photographed children working in coal mines\, cott on mills\, farms\, tenements\, and city streets. The NCLC used Hine’s ph otographs and eyewitness reports to support its campaigns for labor regula tion and reform. His images appeared in pamphlets\, posters\, traveling ex hibitions\, and lantern-slide presentations across the country. Ultimately \, these searing photographs helped shape labor legislation in the United States and established a model for documentary photography. \n\nLisa Oppen heim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso \nLewis Hine in Maryland is accompanied by an installation of two works from artist Lisa Oppenheim’s Spine series\, i n which she appropriates images by Lewis Hine from the Library of Congress . Enlarged to life size\, the photographs depict the backs of adolescent t extile workers whose bodies were curved and misshapen by their labor. Oppe nheim has bifurcated each image along the vertical axis of the spine\, emp hasizing the physical impact of repetitive work on the body. What does economics ha ve to say about this matter? We will cover the basic approach economic the ory takes\, some classic portfolio recommendations\, and new advances in h ow to adjust your investment allocation in light of the fact that most peo ple’s biggest economic asset is their future wage income and Social Secu rity benefits. \nJames Choi is Professor of Finance at the Yale School of Management. His primary research is in household finance and behavioral fi nance\; his work on automatic enrollment has led to changes in pension pla n design around the world. He has also published research on the effects o f social identity and how to use psychology to increase preventive health behaviors. \nProfessor Choi is a two-time recipient of the TIAA Paul A. Sa muelson Award for outstanding scholarly writing on lifelong financial secu rity. He has served as a Co-Director of the Retirement and Disability Rese arch Center at the National Bureau of Economic Research\, an Associate Edi tor at the Journal of Finance and Management Science\, and a member of the FINRA Investor Issues Committee and the American Finance Association’s Ethics and Governance Committees. In this role\, she provides legal assistance to MDVLA clients\, develops legal resource guides and pro fessional development workshops\, supports volunteer attorneys\, and parti cipates in advocacy and stakeholder initiatives on behalf of MDVLA and its constituency. A Baltimore native\, Ravenell holds degrees from Howard Uni versity\, New York University\, and Georgetown Law.
