DESCRIPTION:The place now known as Baltimore\, like the rest of what is no
w known as the United States\, has always been home to Native peoples. Bal
timore is part of the ancestral homelands of the Piscataway and the Susque
hannock\, and a diverse host of American Indian folks from other nations h
ave passed through or lived here at different times — and still do! In t
he mid-twentieth century\, thousands of Lumbee Indians and members of othe
r tribal nations migrated to Baltimore City\, seeking jobs and a better qu
ality of life. They settled in Upper Fells Point and Washington Hill and c
reated a vibrant\, intertribal American Indian community\, which they affe
ctionately referred to as “the reservation\,” in its heyday. In the de
cades since the community has gradually moved away from the area. Recent g
enerations never experienced “the reservation” as such. Today\, most B
altimoreans are surprised to learn that it ever existed. Join historian an
d artist Ashley Minner Jones to learn about places and spaces important to
American Indian history and heritage in the city\, with a focus on East B
altimore’s Historic American Indian “Reservation” in the 20th centur
 y.

e height of fall migration with celebrity birder\, Kojo Baidoo.   Winner
of the World Series of Birding in 2022 and has been featured in NPR when
his Princeton team (Tiger Shrikes) spotted 205 species of birds in a 24-ho
ur period! \nKojo has had a passion for nature and the environment for as
long as he can remember. After reading a book about birds of prey in the f
irst grade and seeking out as many more field guides as he could find in t
he library\, he developed a fascination with birds and never looked back.
Over the years\, he has come to appreciate each and every species he sees\
, and his list of favorite birds grows with every minute he spends outside
. \nKojo attended Princeton University in New Jersey\, earning a degree in
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. During his college years\, he was able
to travel for research internships and semesters abroad\, building bird li
sts in countries such as Mozambique\, South Africa\, and Panama. He comple
ted a senior thesis on the social behavior of black vultures at Hawk Mount
ain Sanctuary in Pennsylvania\, and also served as president and social me
dia chair of the Princeton Birding Society\, where he competed in (and won
!) the World Series of Birding with his college classmates. After graduati
ng in spring 2024\, Kojo spent the fall working in Cape May as an Interpre
tive Naturalist\, and then spent 2025 working as a Hubbard Fellow for The
Nature Conservancy in Nebraska. \nMore than anything\, Kojo loves sharing
his passion for birds with others\, both in-person and online (@kojobirder
on Instagram). He is now back in Baltimore\, and is looking forward to re
connecting with the birding community here! \nMeeting place: We’ll begin

DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event has reached max capacity. We encourage you to
explore our Calendar of Events for other volunteer opportunities this fal
l! \n  \nNewly planted trees need support to survive. Let’s help young
trees grow into healthy forests! \nGVC volunteers have planted 40\,000+ na
tive trees across the Gunpowder Watershed. However\, our work isn’t done
after the trees are planted in the ground. Young trees are vulnerable to
deer browsing and competition with surrounding vegetation. \nTree maintena
nce is a hands-on way for volunteers to improve the health of our local fo
rests and waterways. These events are also a great way to earn community s
ervice hours! \nTree maintenance involves: \n\nRemoving invasive plants\nC
hecking planted trees to see if the shelter needs to be removed\nMaking su
re the tree is growing upright\n\n_______ \nEVENT INFO \nDate: September 1
 9th from 9:00 am – 11:00 am. \nLocation: Faith Lutheran Church (8 Sherwo
od Road\, Cockeysville\, MD 21030) \nParking:  Please park in the parking
lot. We will walk behind the church to the planting section. \n  \nWhat
to bring:  Please wear long pants\, long sleeves\, and socks with closed-
toed shoes to help avoid any ticks. Tick and bug spray will be available a
t the sign-in table. Please bring a water bottle\; water will be available
for refills if needed. \nWe recommend using GPS and the address provided

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Green Mount Cemetery to discover the tangled histor
y of John Wilkes Booth\, Baltimore\, and the plots to kidnap and assassina
te Abraham Lincoln. We’ll trace Booth’s childhood on Exeter Street and
how he followed his Shakespearean-trained father’s footsteps into the t
heater world. We’ll get to know Booth–the womanizer\, the white suprem
acist\, and the presidential assassin. We’ll also revisit major events o
f the Civil War\, including the Pratt Street Riots and the surrender at Ap
pomattox\, and how they influenced the conspirators’ actions leading up
to the day Booth murdered Lincoln. \nAs we walk\, you’ll hear about the
events of the fateful day and the fates of the Booth’s co-conspirators.
And of course\, we’ll see the unmarked burial site of Booth and the grav
es of two of his co-conspirators. We hope you’ll walk to the grounds of
Green Mount Cemetery with us to discover this poignant history in a whole
new light. \nAccessibility: Although there are some paved pathways\, we wi
ll be walking over mostly uneven grassy terrain and cobblestones.
