DESCRIPTION:The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents Lewis Hine in Maryl
and\, on display from August 24 through December 18. The exhibition will b
 e accompanied by Lisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso. \nFrom 1908 to 19
24\, documentary photographer Lewis Hine (American\, 1874–1940) traveled
throughout the United States\, using his camera to document child labor o
n behalf of the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). He photographed chi
ldren working in coal mines\, cotton mills\, farms\, tenements\, and city
streets. The NCLC used Hine’s photographs and eyewitness reports to supp
ort its campaigns for labor regulation and reform. His images appeared in
 pamphlets\, posters\, traveling exhibitions\, and lantern-slide presentati
ons across the country. Ultimately\, these searing photographs helped shap
e labor legislation in the United States and established a model for docum
entary photography. \nIn July 1909\, Hine visited Maryland\, photographing
child workers at Bottomley berry farms in Anne Arundel County and at the
 J. S. Farrand Packing Company in Baltimore. Drawn from UMBC’s Photograph
y Collections\, this exhibition explores the places and people behind thes
e photographs. A selection of Hine’s most iconic and enduring images sit
uates his Maryland work within the broader context of his documentary proj
ect. The exhibition also examines how Hine’s photographs functioned as t
ools of visual persuasion\, working in tandem with captions\, pamphlets\,
slogans\, and posters to shape public opinion — and ultimately legislati
on — regarding the changing role of children in the workforce and in Ame
rican society. \nThis exhibition commemorates MD250 and the U.S. Semiquinc
entennial\, exploring themes foundational to the nation’s history\, incl
uding immigration and migration\, the power of documentary photographs\, a
nd social justice. \n\nPublic Programs \nCuratorial tour and opening recep
 tion\nThursday September 17\, 5 p.m. \nPanel Discussion: Food and Labor in
  Maryland\nThursday October 22\, 6 p.m.\, followed by a reception\nThis ev
ent is co-organized with Department of American Studies and the Orser Cent
er for Public Humanities at UMBC. \nClosing reception\nThursday December 3
\, 6 p.m. \nAll public program are free and open to the public. \n\nLisa O
ppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso \nLewis Hine in Maryland is accompanied b
y an installation of two works from artist Lisa Oppenheim’s Spine series
\, in which she appropriates images by Lewis Hine from the Library of Cong
ress. Enlarged to life size\, the photographs depict the backs of adolesce
nt textile workers whose bodies were curved and misshapen by their labor.
Oppenheim has bifurcated each image along the vertical axis of the spine\,
emphasizing the physical impact of repetitive work on the body. Lisa Oppe
nheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso places Oppenheim’s works in dialogue with
a selection of photographs from UMBC’s Lewis Hine Collection\, displayed
with their versos — or backs — visible to viewers. \nIn 2023\, with s
upport from a National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistanc
e Grant\, Special Collections staff undertook a major initiative to rehous
e the Lewis Hine photographs and digitize their versos. The backs of the p
hotographs bear captions\, annotations\, and inscriptions by Hine and othe
rs employed by the NCLC\, testifying to their use in the organization’s
publications and promotional campaigns. Together\, these materials reveal
the many forms of labor documented in Hine’s work and the ways that labo
r is imprinted upon — and remains legible within — the bodies of his s
ubjects. \n \nLisa Oppenheim was born in 1975 in New York\, New York. She
received a BA in art and semiotics from Brown University in 1998 and an MF
A in film and video from Bard College in 2001. She attended the Whitney Mu
seum of American Art Independent Study Program for studio art in 2003. Opp
enheim’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at MUDAM\, The Co
ntemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg (2025)\; Huis Marseille\, Amsterdam (2
024)\, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (2017)\, and the Museum of Contem
porary Art Cleveland (2016). In 2014\, Oppenheim was the recipient of the
AIMIA|AGO Photography Prize from the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Shpilm
an International Photography Prize from the Israel Museum. Her work is hel
d in the permanent collections of The J. Paul Getty Museum\, Los Angeles\,

 n Francisco\, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York\, Santa Barbara Muse

e reminders of the mystery\, danger\, and beauty of being alive. \nIn “C
aiman\,” a father buys a baby alligator in hopes of keeping his family s
afe. In “Soldier of Fortune\,” a teenage boy dog-sits for his neighbor
s after tragedy strikes\, and his innocent snooping uncovers the family’
s most guarded secret. And in the luminous “Half of What Atlee Rouse Kno
ws About Horses\,” an elderly man’s heart is laid bare with the raw an
d breathtaking power of wild horses. \nJohnston’s humor\, empathy\, and
mastery of prose ring out through each story\, bringing every finely-drawn
character to radiant life. Individually\, the stories are by turns suspen
seful\, poignant and exhilarating. Taken together\, they reveal the abidin
g connections that lead us from sorrow and impermanence back to ourselves
and\, ultimately\, to each other. \n\nIf you need an accommodation for thi

ill all requests\, but advance notice is necessary to arrange for some acc
essibility services. \n\nEnjoying our free events? Help us offer more pro

as well as director of the MA in Teaching Writing Program. He has publish
ed short fiction in CARVE\, Craft Literary\, The Valparaiso Review\, and o

writing. Loss of Life is his first novel. After living for three decade
s in Alexandria\, Virginia\, following his retirement he and his wife move
d to Portland\, Maine. Learn more at markfarrington.net. \nMichelle Brafm
an is the author of Washing the Dead\, Bertrand Court\, and Swimming w
ith Ghosts\, the companion novel to Draw Near to Me. Her work has appea

 chellebrafman.com. \n\nAbout LOSS OF LIFE\nIn a Virginia hospital\, forty
-one-year-old Matthew Winton awakens from a car accident with no memory of
his life after the age of thirteen. \nOver time\, he learns that he is a
college professor who lives alone and has no family. He is also a writer\,
and he turns first to his writing\, hoping it will show him his past. But
he has written primarily fiction\, and he struggles to separate the blurr
ed lines between fiction and fact. He is helped by a policewoman who inves
tigated his accident\, and a relationship develops. Then he comes upon som
ething he’d written shortly before the crash. This writing disturbs him
greatly and leads to a series of events that end with him traveling to Mas
sachusetts\, where he spent the first thirty years of his life\, in search
of ghosts from his past. Throughout\, he’s been troubled by questions r
aised by the car accident. What was he doing out on a deserted country roa
d at two o’clock on a Sunday morning? He had no luggage in the car\, nor
anything that might have given a clue to his intentions. Even the policew
oman who investigated seems to have questions about whether the crash was
really an accident. As Matthew learns more about his past\, he fears that
