DESCRIPTION:3 performances | Sept. 4 & 5 at 8 p.m. | Sept. 6 at 2 p.m.
\n\nSet against the political upheaval of 1660 Derbyshire\, this concert p
roduction of Sullivan’s rarely performed Haddon Hall unfolds as a rehear
sal within the historic estate itself\, weaving together romance\, history
\, and intrigue. At its heart is Dorothy Vernon\, who risks everything for
love in a world shaped by shifting allegiances\, social expectations\, an
d the performance of power. Featuring Sullivan’s charming and spirited s
 core\, this semi-staged performance offers an evening of wit\, warmth\, a
nd surprising relevance—a reminder that politics has always been a kind
 of theater.\n\nTICKETS

DESCRIPTION:Pianist Matthew Palumbo presents a lecture-recital centering o
n the Piano Sonata\, Op. 26\, a masterwork by Samuel Barber. Composed in 1
947 through 1949\, the technically demanding Sonata was premiered by Vladi
mir Horowitz in Havana and quickly entered the 20th century piano repertoi
re. \nPalumbo says\, “I was raised with statements such as ‘great tech
nique fits one’s unique physical structure and is governed by sincere ar
tistry that is derived solely from the score.’ When one goes against the
music\, the body protests and injury occurs. 20th and 21st century music
creates unique problems in this light\, as much of it stacks dissonance wi
th dissonance\, or resolves dissonance with ‘lesser’ dissonance. As ma
ny students begin to understand the underlying musical implications of thi
s 20th century music\, much of the physicality has to be relearned. The go
al: to refine and keep the musical intention\, while releasing the tension
in a healthy manner. This lecture-recital seeks to demonstrate methods fo
r this type of musicianship using Barber Piano Sonata as a case example.
” \n\nAccomplished pianist and teacher Matthew J. Palumbo made his solo
debut with the Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra at age thirteen as the winne
r of the Seattle Young Artists Music Festival. He performed across the Uni
ted States and Europe in venues such as Carnegie Hall\, Benaroya Hall\, Fr
iedberg Hall\, and in 2015 was the Maryland Artist representative for the
Music Teachers National Association where he performed more locally in Str
 athmore\, Goodwin\, Griswald\, Katzen\, Peters\, Linehan\, numerous others
\, and appeared on concert series such as First and Franklin\, Cathedral C
oncert Series\, Sound and Serenity\, An Die Musik\, Prince George’s Arti
st Series\, and others.  \nMr. Palumbo is in demand as a teacher\, adjudi
cator\, and master clinician throughout the Baltimore-Washington region. M
 ost recently\, he has been a judge for the E. R. Davis\, Hartman\, Doris C
hase\, and Gottlieb competitions\, and is currently the chairperson for th
e MTAGB Collegiate Scholarship competition in coordination with Steinway &
Sons. He is a board member of the Maryland State Music Teachers Associati
on\, an associate professor at the Community College of Baltimore County\,
and was co-director and faculty at the Leon Fleisher Academy in 2022. His
students have received numerous awards and have been accepted with highes
 t scholarships to Peabody\, University of Maryland\, Towson\, Howard\, Sus
quehanna\, and others\, and have performed in venues such as Weill Hall an
d the Kennedy Center. \n\nAdmission is free\, and tickets are not required
. \n\nLinehan Concert Hall\, located in the Performing Arts and Humanities

DESCRIPTION:Based on the film that starred Jack Lemmon\, Tony Curtis\, and
Marilyn Monroe\, this Broadway hit gives a classic story new life with mu
sic and lyrics from the creators of Hairspray\, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wi
ttman. The super-smart book and lyrics by Tony Award-winning playwright M
atthew Lopez (Inheritance) and Late Night star Amber Ruffin update the vib
e to suit 21st-century audiences\, telling the hilarious story of two 1930
s jazz musicians who go on the run from the mob disguised as women as part
of an all-female band headed to California. Just like in the movie\, Joe
and Jerry become Josephine and Daphne\, become “friendly” with the ban
d's star singer Sugar Kane\, and find themselves transformed by the exper
ience – and in ways a 1950s film could never make explicit. This tap-hea
 vy\, dance-intensive\, Prohibition-era spectacle retains a comic heart of
pure gold as co-author Lopez reminds us\, “we don’t think men in dres

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reading and conversation with poets Sylvia Jones
and Jane Lewty\, sharing work from their new books.\n\n \n\nAbout Dope Ca
listhenics:\nSylvia Jones's sophomore collection examines the pressure exe
 rted on working-class Black life by spectacle\, debt\, inheritance\, and t
he market's endless demand for performance. The poems move through Baltimo
 re\, television\, retail language\, protest remnants\, and borrowed speech
\, tracking how public feeling hardens into product and how survival becom
es a style others learn to consume. Class aspiration and class entrapment\
, the theater of mobility\, and the material afterlife of slogans once the
moment of display has passed all loom large as Jones asks what kind of co
nsciousness repetition makes\, and what remains when the shift ends and th
e bill arrives? Dope Calisthenics is a book about the psychic drills requi
red to live inside scarcity while being told to call it possibility instea
 d.\n\n \n\nAbout Vespers:\n\nOften called “evening prayer\,” vespers i
s held around sunset. Its purpose: to give thanks for the day and offer a
sacrifice of praise to God. In Jane Lewty’s Vespers\, she superimposes t
he tropes of the Christian ritual onto a very different type of sacrifice
—that of making art. Through nightly devotion\, the speaker of these poe
ms maps ritual until it degrades: the speaker as an obedient robot\, a scr
 ibe-concubine\, a centaur wearing skates\, a poet seeking virtuosity and d
exterity. Vespers asks: What if writing prompts are a bad idea? What if on
e could become addicted to the incremental process? Is it possible to walk
away from an addiction without suffering and trauma?\n\n\nAbout the Poets
:\n\nSylvia Jones is the author of Television Fathers (Meekling Press\, 20
 24) and Dope Calisthenics\, forthcoming from Relegation Books in fall 2026
. Her poems have appeared in Annulet\, DIAGRAM\, Smartish Pace\, Shenandoa
h\, Common Place Poetics\, Long News: Poetry & Poetics\, The American Poet
ry Review\, The Hopkins Review\, and elsewhere. She teaches creative writi
ng at George Washington University and lives in Baltimore\, Maryland.\n\nR
ead "Government Shutdown Day 15" and four other poems.\n\n \n\nJane Lewty
is the author of three poetry collections: Vespers (Iowa University Press\
, 2026)\, Bravura Cool (1913 Press)\, and In One Form To Find Another (Cle
veland State University Poetry Center). She lives in Baltimore and teaches
at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).\n\nRead "an eros" and "clois

wn to Music is a unique fusion of sound and sight—an immersive experienc
e where live music and visual art come together in real time. As musical p
erformers play an evocative repertoire\, artists surround the musicians\,
sketching the performers in the moment. Audience members are invited to ob
serve the creative process from both sides—hearing the music unfold whil
e witnessing its visual interpretation take shape before their eyes. Part
concert\, part live art session\, Drawn to Music celebrates the spontaneou
