A longtime collaborator of both Don and Moki C herry\, Ruíz arranged for the pair to travel their Organic Music Society workshop to Mexico City in 1977. In 2021\, Naima and Ruíz began performin g together—carrying forth a multi-generational legacy of music. For the Cherry family\, music is more than art\; it is a shared language of the ho usehold\, connecting every room\, every collaboration\, every generation. \nIn the conversation that follows\, Naima reflects on her grandparent's g enre-defying practices and how their philosophies continue to shape her ow n work across sound\, image\, and improvisation. Her practice interweaves sonic and visual forms led by interests in repetition\, improvisation\, and relationships between language\, image\, symbol and sound. Naima’s main instrument is the piano\, as well as per cussion\, vibraphone\, and electric organ. Improvisation is at the core of the artist’s musical process\, combined with an inherently organic appr oach to playing - calling on concepts of “Organic Music” proposed inde pendently by two major influences to the artist: the composer Julius Eastm an (1940-90)\, and her grandfather the jazz musician Don Cherry (1936-95). Naima is also an archivist and coordinator for the Estate of Moki Cherry and Cherry Archives. She has studied piano in the tradition of her grandfa ther Don Cherry with her uncles Eagle-Eye and David Ornette Cherry\, and w ith Ana Ruíz. \nAna Ruíz and Naima first connected in 2021\, when Naima went to study piano with her in Mexico. They have played together in ensem bles and as a duo performing improvisations and Don Cherry compositions on two pianos - at locations such as Casa del Lago (Mexico City)\, Munchmuse et (Oslo) and Barbican Centre (London). \nAna Ruíz (b. 1952) is a compose r\, pianist and pioneer of jazz and improvisation in Mexico. She started A trás del Cosmos\, the first free jazz ensemble in Mexico\, with her husba nd Henry West in 1972\, and in 1977 they invited Moki and Don Cherry to Me xico City to teach their Organic Music workshops and tour together over a 6-month period. Ana Ruiz became a student and collaborator of Don Cherry a nd to this day continues to teach and play his music with her students and contemporaries in Mexico. Ruíz has worked as a music educator\, and comp oser for film and dance productions\, and she is the musical director of A na Ruíz y su Orquesta Kóryma. Her essay "Free Jazz\, improvisación y ex perimentalismo en México" features in the book Sonidos de México publish ed by Sexto Piso in 2024. She welcomed people into her home as a gathering place for music\, food\, craft\, and community. \nIn that sam e spirit\, we're partnering with Austin artist Tanya Zal\, who has reimagi ned a hearth as a communal sculpture in her work Earth Oven at MASS Galler y. Zal will host an afternoon rooted in making and sharing food as a radic al\, tender\, feminist act where the table is a site of care. \nWe invite fellow makers\, creatives\, and community organizers to join facilitated d iscussions around the joys of creating collaborative environments\, with r efreshments and earth oven-baked nourishment from guest chef Lynn Metcalf. \n  \n \nAbout Earth Oven\nEarth Oven is a communal\, functional sculptu re project led by Tanya Zal that lives permanently at MASS Gallery\, a col lectively run nonprofit gallery and project space based in East Austin ded icated to amplifying the voices of LGBTQ+ artists\, artists of color\, and local creatives. Grounded in the practice of hand building and created in collaboration with the help of many in fall 2025. The piece was made usin g natural building techniques and locally sourced materials—limestone\, soil\, sand\, and straw. The surface is decorated with recycled ceramic pi eces made during a Clay ReWork-Shop\, where artists reimagined broken bisq ue and glaze ware into tiles and mosaics. The oven functions as a regular gathering space for sharing food and community.\n \nAbout Tanya Zal\nTany a Zal (she/her) is an Austin-based artist interested in practicing deeper care with ourselves\, others\, and the things around us. Her sculptural pr ojects are a playful celebration of the creative process\, an anchor to jo y\, and an invitation toward curiosity. Originally from upstate New York\, where she completed her BFA in 2010\, Tanya has spent the last decade wor king in non-profit arts\, community organizing\, and reproductive justice spaces.
