od you eat. I've learned that information is power." \n \n \n
 			\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
 		\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
A third participant\, Chef Nettie\, viewed the class through a generat
ional lens\, seeing it as an opportunity to help younger children in her c
ommunity build a healthier relationship with food before habits take hold.
   								\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n "
It's very educational\, and I believe it's something we need in our commun
ity\, especially to teach our children how to eat healthier so they can gr
ow up healthier and stay healthy throughout their lives\," Chef Nettie sai
 d. "The entire program and educational experience are excellent and very m
 uch needed today." \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
 					\n \n \n \n \n \n Community partners echoed tha
t sense of urgency. Dr. Maricela Cáceres\, Program Manager for Cities for
Better Health Houston\, described THK/LCA as a unique and much-needed res
ource in the local nutrition education landscape. \n \n \n
 			\n \n \n \n \n \n \n "We're incredibly excited a
bout this program! "Its comprehensive 6 weeks adult education model fills
a unique gap that standard nutrition programs don't address"\, Dr. Cácere
s said. "The Cities for Better Health Houston Faith Health Leadership coho
rt found a very valuable resource in The Happy Kitchen / La Cocina Alegre\
, and we're grateful to the Seventh-day Adventist Church for connecting us
with Sustainable Food Center. We look forward to continuing to promote th
e program and helping expand its reach across Houston” \n \n
 	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n That community-led a
pproach gives the program its lasting impact\, building a growing network
of facilitators and community advocates who can carry THK/LCA forward in t
heir own neighborhoods while expanding access to nutrition education acros
 s Houston.  								\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Help

DESCRIPTION:Moki Cherry's artistic practice went beyond artmaking\, it was
a means of bringing people together. She welcomed people into her home as
  a gathering place for music\, food\, craft\, and community. \nIn that sam
e spirit\, we're partnering with Austin artist Tanya Zal\, who has reimagi
ned a hearth as a communal sculpture in her work Earth Oven at MASS Galler
 y. Zal will host an afternoon rooted in making and sharing food as a radic
al\, tender\, feminist act where the table is a site of care. \nWe invite
fellow makers\, creatives\, and community organizers to join facilitated d
iscussions around the joys of creating collaborative environments\, with r
efreshments and earth oven-baked nourishment from guest chef Lynn Metcalf.
  \n  \n \nAbout Earth Oven\nEarth Oven is a communal\, functional sculptu
re project led by Tanya Zal that lives permanently at MASS Gallery\, a col
lectively run nonprofit gallery and project space based in East Austin ded
icated to amplifying the voices of LGBTQ+ artists\, artists of color\, and
local creatives. Grounded in the practice of hand building and created in
collaboration with the help of many in fall 2025. The piece was made usin
g natural building techniques and locally sourced materials—limestone\,
soil\, sand\, and straw. The surface is decorated with recycled ceramic pi
eces made during a Clay ReWork-Shop\, where artists reimagined broken bisq
ue and glaze ware into tiles and mosaics. The oven functions as a regular
gathering space for sharing food and community.\n \nAbout Tanya Zal\nTany
a Zal (she/her) is an Austin-based artist interested in practicing deeper
care with ourselves\, others\, and the things around us. Her sculptural pr
ojects are a playful celebration of the creative process\, an anchor to jo
y\, and an invitation toward curiosity. Originally from upstate New York\,
where she completed her BFA in 2010\, Tanya has spent the last decade wor
king in non-profit arts\, community organizing\, and reproductive justice
spaces. She is a current Curatorial Advisor at Future Front Texas and part
of the leadership team at MASS Gallery.\n \n Photography by Penny Halcyo
