ow chronicles Cleaver’s personal journey from the child of a U.S. Foreig

a leader in the Black Panther Party and the international Black Power mov
ement\; and as she went from living “inside exile” (accompanying her f
ugitive husband to Algeria and France while she herself still possessed re

ising two children\, becoming a law professor at Yale and Emory Universiti

DESCRIPTION:You Are Not Alone: BUGS!\, curated by Charlotte Woolf\, is a g
 roup exhibition featuring Atlanta-based painters\, sculptors\, photographe
rs\, and multidisciplinary artists. The exhibition reflects the interdisci
plinary nature of the Fine Arts Department at Georgia State University Per
imeter College\, incorporating related programming in theater\, music\, an
d film centered around the theme of insects. \nThe title of the exhibition
\, You Are Not Alone: BUGS!\, is drawn from the popular meme honoring the
ecosystem’s smallest yet irreplaceable members. The exhibition features
artists working across mediums whose practices engage insects and their vi
tal role within ecological systems. Through themes of pollination\, decomp
osition\, labor\, and interdependence\, the show explores how insects shap
e the environments around us\, inviting both artists and viewers to reflec
t on the often-unseen networks sustained by these powerful creatures.

DESCRIPTION:REEL Art: installation Access Point – Work in Progress\nby A
dam Larsen in Collaboration with Sue Schroeder\nAccess Point is a feature
length immersive documentary work in progress that follows individuals wit
h disabilities as they navigate vast and varied natural landscapes. Throug
h intimate interviews and vivid on-the ground footage\, the film explores
often-overlooked barriers to outdoor accessibility—alongside powerful st
ories of resilience\, community\, and empowerment that emerge along the wa
y.\nThe development of the documentary began with a diverse group of parti
cipantsconnected to Bay Area disability organizations\, including Ala Cost
a Centers\, BORP Adaptive Sports and Recreation\, The Center for Independe
nt Living\, The Disability Cultural Center at UC Berkeley\, Friends of L
’Arche San Francisco Bay Area\, Creative Growth\, and NIAD Art Center. T
hese partnerships have provided invaluable insight\, ensuring the film aut
hentically reflects the lived experiences of people across a range of disa
bilities. By featuring participants who are Deaf\, hard of hearing\, blind
\, or who have mobility or cognitive disabilities\, Access Point highlight
s the many ways disability intersects with the natural world. It becomes n
ot just a story of overcoming obstacles\, but also one of the universal hu
man desire to engage with the outdoors—underscoring the transformative p
ower of nature for all. Partnerships and participation in Access Point\nar
e currently expanding\, broadening its reach beyond the Bay Area to commun
ities across the United States.\nAs participants explore outdoor spaces—
from hiking trails and national parks to beaches\, forests\, and rivers—
Access Point reveals the barriers people face\, including limited accessib
ility\, lack of resources\, and social or cultural exclusion. Each partici
pant brings a unique relationship to nature: some are seasoned explorers w
hose access has been constrained\, while others are encountering these lan
dscapes for the first time.\nThrough their experiences\, the film captures
the joy\, reflection\, and sense of empowerment that nature can inspire w
hen inequities in access are addressed. At its core\, Access Point is a st
ory about inclusion\, equity\, and the right to experience the outdoors. I
t asserts that access to nature is a fundamental right not a privilege—
and examines how inaccessible outdoor spaces intersect with broader societ
al inequities. By connecting the disability community with the environment
al movement\,the film emphasizes that inclusive outdoor spaces are essenti
al to a just and equitable society. It encourages a rethinking of how publ
ic spaces are designed and used\, fostering collaboration between environm
ental and disability advocates and sparking a broader conversation about a
ccess\, equity\, and belonging.\nUltimately\, Access Point invites viewers
to reflect on their own relationships to the natural world and to envisio
n a future where outdoor spaces are welcoming to everyone. Through compell
ing storytelling and the beauty of natural landscapes\, the documentary ad
vocates for a world in which nature is a shared space—accessible\, engag
 ing\, and inspiring for all.

DESCRIPTION:The Mission Changes\, But the Mindset Does NotLeaving military
service can create a difficult question: What comes next? For many vetera
ns\, the challenge is not a lack of experience. It is recognizing how much
of what they learned in uniform still matters outside of it. During a con
versation at Advancing The Line\, Marine veteran Elizabeth Stephens shared
a journey that has taken her from military aviation to cybersecurity\, Mi
crosoft\, entrepreneurship\, community leadership\, and public service. Th
e industries changed. The responsibilities changed. The environments chang
ed. But many of the skills that allowed her to move forward did not. Her s
tory points to a bigger idea for veterans navigating life after service: Y
ou may leave the military\, but you do not have to leave the mindset that
helped you lead\, adapt\, and perform when things became difficult. Vetera
ns May Not Need to “Translate” EverythingVeterans are often told that
they need to translate their military experience into something the civili
an world can understand. Elizabeth challenges that idea. When people look
at military experience and then look at a career in technology or corporat
e leadership\, the two can appear completely different. Flying military ai
rcraft does not look like managing technology infrastructure. A combat mis
sion does not look like a corporate meeting. A military unit does not oper
ate like a technology company. But underneath those environments are many
of the same leadership demands. You have a mission. You have limited resou
rces. Things can go wrong. People depend on your decisions. And sometimes
you have to act before you have every answer. Elizabeth explained that she
did not have to erase everything she learned in the Marine Corps to succe
ed in the corporate world. Instead\, she recognized that many of the quali
ties that helped her operate in the military could also help her operate i
n business. That changes the veteran transition conversation. Instead of o
nly asking\, “How do I translate who I was?” Another question becomes:
“Where can I apply what I already know how to do?” The Ability to Ope
rate in Chaos Has ValueOne of the strongest ideas from the conversation wa
s risk. Veterans can sometimes appear highly comfortable with risk. They m
ay make decisions quickly\, move into uncertain situations\, and continue
operating while others are still trying to understand what happened. But E
lizabeth offered another way to look at it. It may not always be about acc
epting more risk. It can be about becoming very good at managing risk. Thr
ough training and experience\, service members repeatedly practice evaluat
ing situations\, considering what could go wrong\, adjusting their plans\,
and continuing toward the mission. That process can become almost automat
ic. In civilian life\, that same ability can matter in leadership\, entrep
 reneurship\, cybersecurity\, technology\, operations\, and countless other
environments. The surroundings may be different\, but uncertainty still e
xists. Organizations still face problems. Plans still fail. Leaders still
have to make decisions without perfect information. Elizabeth described th
e ability to operate during chaos and make decisions without panicking as
one of the important strengths veterans can carry forward. Risk Management
Can Look Like Courage From the OutsideDuring the discussion\, Zachary Bro
ughton reflected on his own willingness to take major risks while building
Advancing The Line. From his perspective\, he had been highly accepting o
f risk. Elizabeth challenged that view. Her point was that veterans often
process risks before taking action. They think through different outcomes\
, prepare for problems\, and build ways around possible failure. By the ti
me they act\, much of that risk has already been considered. What looks li
ke fearless decision making from the outside may actually be the result of
preparation. That is an important distinction. Strong leadership is not n
ecessarily about ignoring risk. It can be about understanding enough of th
e risk that you are still able to move when others freeze. From the Cockpi
t to the Corporate WorldElizabeth’s own career provides an example of ho
w that mindset can move between completely different environments. After l
eaving the Marine Corps\, she entered the technology world without having
every technical skill already mastered. She learned. She adapted. She work
ed around people who knew things she did not know. Eventually\, that journ
ey took her to Microsoft and major responsibilities involving technology i
nfrastructure and security. Her experience highlights something veterans c
an sometimes overlook. You do not necessarily need to know everything abou
t the next industry before entering it. Military service repeatedly requir
es people to enter unfamiliar situations\, learn quickly\, understand the
mission\, work with the people around them\, and figure out how to move fo
rward. Those abilities do not disappear when the uniform comes off. When T
echnology Moves Faster\, Judgment Matters MoreThe conversation also moved
into cybersecurity\, drones\, artificial intelligence\, and how technology
is changing modern conflict. Elizabeth raised concerns about allowing tec
hnology to move from supporting human decisions toward making serious deci
sions without meaningful human judgment. Her argument centered on somethin
g simple: Technology can process information quickly\, but speed alone doe
s not replace judgment. AI systems can identify patterns and produce likel
y outputs based on information they have processed. That is different from
a person understanding the full human meaning and consequences of a decis
ion. For Elizabeth\, the human role remains important\, especially when de
cisions involve serious consequences. This idea reaches beyond the militar
 y. Companies are adopting AI. Cyber threats continue to change. Automation
is entering more parts of everyday work. The question is no longer simply
whether organizations can use these technologies. The bigger question is:
How do we use powerful technology while keeping responsible human judgmen
t involved? The Next Front Line May Look Very DifferentAnother major theme
was the changing meaning of service. A veteran’s next contribution does
not necessarily happen on a battlefield. It may happen inside a company.
It may happen in cybersecurity. It may happen while building a business. I
t may happen through technology. It may happen inside a community. Elizabe
th described cybersecurity and emerging technology as areas where military
experience and the veteran mindset can continue to matter. The tools have
changed. The environment has changed. But society still needs people who
 can understand risk\, protect systems\, organize teams\, solve problems\,
and continue moving when circumstances become uncertain. For some veterans
\, that could become the next mission. Strength Does Not Remove the Need f
or CommunityMilitary experience can teach independence. It can teach peopl
e to keep moving when circumstances become uncomfortable. But that strengt
h can also create a challenge during transition. Veterans may feel like th
ey are supposed to figure everything out alone. Elizabeth emphasized the i
mportance of veterans coming together\, helping one another reframe their
experiences\, and reminding each other of the value they still carry. That
is part of what communities like Advancing The Line are trying to provide
. Not simply networking. Not simply career translation. Community. A place
where veterans can meet people who understand where they came from while
also helping them determine where they are going next. Service Can Continu
e Without the UniformPerhaps the biggest idea running through the entire c
onversation is that service does not necessarily end when military service
ends. Its form can change. Elizabeth’s path moved through aviation\, te
 chnology\, cybersecurity\, entrepreneurship\, community work\, and eventua
lly a decision to seek public office\, which she described as another way
she was choosing to pursue service and issues she cared about. The convers
ation does not suggest that every veteran needs to follow the same path. Q
uite the opposite. The next mission will look different for everyone. For
one veteran\, it might be building a company. For another\, it could be cy
bersecurity. For someone else\, it could be mentoring other veterans\, lea
ding a team\, serving a community\, or simply building a strong life after
military service. What matters is recognizing that the experience accumul
ated during service does not suddenly lose its value. The Mission Changes.
The Mindset Can Continue.Veterans have already spent years learning how t
o operate when circumstances are uncertain. They have made decisions with
incomplete information. They have worked within teams where everyone depen
ded on one another. They have adapted when plans changed. They have learne
d to understand risk. And they have learned that sometimes the mission sti
ll has to move forward when conditions are far from perfect. Those qualiti
es can have a place far beyond military service. The cockpit can become th
e boardroom. The battlefield can become cybersecurity. The military unit c
an become a company or community. The mission itself can become something
completely new. The important part is recognizing that starting a new chap
ter does not always mean starting over. Sometimes it means taking everythi
ng you already learned and finding the next place where it can make a diff
erence. The uniform may come off. The mission may change. But the ability
to lead\, adapt\, serve\, and move forward can remain.

Takes Root: Works by Southern Artists From the Larry M. and Gwendolyn E.
Walker Collection" celebrates the artistic vision\, mentorship and lasting
cultural influence of acclaimed artist\, GSU professor emeritus and forme
r Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design Director Larry M. Walker (1935–
2023)\, whose personal collection of over 300 works was gifted to the univ

ved experience that shapes artistic methods and ways of seeing. Drawing fr
om the Walker Collection\, the exhibition presents works by artists whose
practices are deeply rooted in the region’s history\, culture and enviro

DESCRIPTION:Maintaining more than 1\,400 miles of roadway across Atlanta r
equires more than responding to potholes.  It requires knowing where infr
astructure is deteriorating\, understanding which improvements should come
first and making informed decisions about where transportation dollars ca
n have the greatest impact. The Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLD
OT) has partnered with Cyvl to do exactly that.  Cyvl is an AI-powered i
ntelligence platform that uses LiDAR sensors\, advanced imagery\, and art
ificial intelligence (AI) to collect detailed information about the cond
ition of transportation infrastructure. The technology is helping teams p
rioritize maintenance and make data-backed infrastructure investments.
Traditionally\, assessing a large roadway network can require extensive m
anual surveys and months of work. Cyvl’s technology allows ATLDOT to sc
an and analyze the City’s 1\,450-mile road network in days.  As vehicl
es equipped with Cyvl’s technology travel Atlanta’s streets\, informat
ion about the roadway is captured. AI then analyzes that information to
identify pavement conditions. The result is objective data showing what
infrastructure exists\, where it is located\, and what condition it is in
 . \n \n \n \n Better Pavement Across Downtown Atlanta
 				\n \n \n \n Cyvl first worked with ATLDOT in 2024 to
conduct a roadway assessment that established a baseline for pavement cond
itions. A follow-up assessment helped guide the City’s 2025 Downtown Pav
ement Program and identify where improvements were needed.\n\nBetween 2024
and 2026\, 85% of downtown roads were repaired and potholes decreased by
60%. By 2026\, 97% of downtown streets were classified as “great\,” up
  from 47% before the program began. \n \n \n \n
 																			\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
 	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
 	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
 			\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
 					\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
 Taking the Approach Citywide \n \n \n \n Building on t
he results of the Downtown Pavement Program\, Atlanta has expanded its par
tnership with Cyvl citywide. The expanded program covers roadways\, sidewa
lks\, curb ramps\, and street signs.“The Downtown Pavement Program resul
ts show what data-driven infrastructure management can do\,” ATLDOT Comm
issioner Solomon Caviness said. “By using reliable\, continuously update
 d information\, we reduced potholes\, improved pavement conditions\, and m
ade smarter investments. Expanding this approach citywide will help us str
etch every infrastructure dollar\, prioritize where the need is the greate
st\, and stay ahead of issues in every neighborhood.” \n \n
 		\n \n Building a Better Transportation Network \n \n \n
\n Atlanta’s downtown improvements received added attention
as the city prepared to welcome visitors for the 2026 FIFA World Cup\, but
the value of the work extends well beyond a major event. \n\nThe larger g
oal is creating a more proactive way to manage Atlanta’s infrastructure.
Instead of simply identifying a street that needs work today\, continuous
ly updated data can help ATLDOT understand how conditions are changing acr
oss the city and plan accordingly. \n\nFor residents\, the technology its
elf may largely operate behind the scenes. Its impact is much easier to se
e – fewer potholes and improved pavement. As ATLDOT expands this approac
h across the city\, data is becoming another tool for building and maintai
ning transportation infrastructure that better serves every Atlanta neighb
 orhood.

try \n \nHolden was born and raised in Houston. He developed a love of foo
d at a young age by cooking with his mom and grandmother\, Adelle and Barb
. Growing up in Texas\, he would grow to love the art of wood-fired cookin
 g. Whether it was low-and-slow smoked briskets at traditional Texas barbec
ue joints\, carne asada cooked in an old oil-barrel grill on the side of t
he road\, or peach cobbler baked in a Dutch oven over the embers of a dyin
g campfire during his Boy Scouts days\, fire and food seemed a natural con
nection in his mind. \nIn 2020\, Holden moved to Atlanta and began working
at Bold Monk Brewing and White Oak Kitchen and Cocktails\, his first true
experiences in fine dining. The next year\, he met chef Nick Leahy at Nic
k’s Westside and\, after working as a line cook\, was promoted to sous c
hef and eventually chef de cuisine. During his time at Nick’s\, Holden c
ame to appreciate the value of using seasonal and local ingredients while
also learning many of the classic European cooking techniques for which Le
ahy is known. \nAfter Nick’s Westside closed in December 2023\, Holden c
ontinued working with Leahy as they began opening Vice Restaurant Group. I
 n July 2025\, the group’s flagship restaurant\, Vice Steak Bar\, opened\
, where Holden is the executive chef. \nOutside of his work at Vice\, Hold
en plans to open his first pop-up\, Chenna\, with his longtime friend and
former line-cooking mate Jake Farquarson. Chenna will feature a tapas-styl
e menu with a focus on wood-fired cooking and baking. The two plan to hold
their first pop-up at the end of 2026. \nBesides cooking\, Holden enjoys
golfing\, traveling and spending time with his girlfriend\, Cori. \n\nAbou
t Taylor Mead  \n \nTaylor has always had a passion for food and nature t
hat easily translated to a love for cooking. She is self-taught and inspir
ed by several cooks\, including Alice Waters\, Edna Lewis\, Julia Child an
d her homesteading great-grandmother. In her mission to educate and empowe
r others to cook for themselves\, she started a small business\, Better Of
f Fed\, where she sells spice blends. Her cooking focuses on local ingredi
ents to highlight the beauty of each season. With an interest in food sove
reignty\, she keeps a small flock of backyard chickens\, a seasonal vegeta
ble garden and a few fruiting perennials. She believes in the power and jo
y of nourishing ourselves\, our communities and our planet with good food
 and sustainable agricultural practices.

DESCRIPTION:Three-time Grammy Award winner\, Lucinda Williams has been car
ving her own path for more than three decades now. Born in Lake Charles\,
Louisiana\, Williams had been imbued with a “culturally rich\, economica
lly poor” worldview. Several years of playing the hardscrabble clubs gav
e her a solid enough footing to record a self-titled album that would beco
me a touchstone for the embryonic Americana movement – helping launch a
thousand musical ships along the way. \nWhile not a huge commercial succes
s at the time Lucinda Williams (aka\, the Rough Trade album) retained a cu
lt reputation\, and finally got the reception it deserved upon its reissue
in 2014. Jim Farber of New York’s Daily News hailed the reissue by sayi
ng “Listening again proves it to be that rarest of beasts: a perfect wor
 k. There’s not a chord\, lyric\, beat or inflection that doesn’t pull
at the heart or make it soar.” \nFor much of the next decade\, Williams
moved around the country\, stopping in Austin\, Los Angeles\, Nashville\,
and turning out work that won immense respect within the industry (winning
a Grammy for Mary Chapin Carpenter’s version of “Passionate Kisses”
) and a gradually growing cult audience. While her recorded output was spa
rse for a time\, the work that emerged was invariably hailed for its indel
ible impressionism — like 1998’s Car Wheels on a Gravel Road\, which n
otched her first Grammy as a performer. \nThe past decade brought further
development\, both musically and personally\, evidenced on albums like Wes
t (2007)\, which All Music Guide called “flawless…destined to become a
classic” and Blessed (2011)\, which the Los Angeles Times dubbed “a d
ynamic\, human\, album\, one that’s easy to fall in love with.” Those
albums retained much of Williams’ trademark melancholy and southern Goth
ic starkness\, but also exuded more rays of light and hope. This all lead
to the 2014 release of Williams’ first double studio album Down Where Th
e Spirit Meets The Bone\, followed by the 2016 release of her second doubl
e album\, the The Ghosts of Highway 20. Both albums received overwhelming
praise from the media and fans. 2020’s Good Soul Better Angels was a soc
iopolitical masterpiece\, garnering two Grammy nominations as well as feat
ures in The New York Times\, Rolling Stone\, Los Angeles Times and so much
more\, Lucinda made a return appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Col
bert and was the subject of a feature segment on NPR’s All Things Consid
ered. \nIn October of 2021\, Lucinda Williams was inducted into the Austin
City Limits Hall Of Fame. \nIn April 2023\, Williams released her long-aw
aited memoir\, Don’t Tell Anybody The Secrets I Told You (Crown\, a divi
sion of Penguin Random House LLC)\, to wide critical acclaim. The memoir d
ebuted at #5 on the New York Times Bestsellers and Williams was featured o
n the cover of the New York Times Sunday Styles. Williams was featured at
Vanity Fair\, NPR All Things Considered\, The Associated Press\, Esquire\,
The Nation\, and many more\, including a sit down on Late Night with Seth
Meyers. \nIn June 2023\, Williams release the critically acclaimed album
 Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart (Highway 20 Records/Thirty Tigers)\, whic
h received high praise from the press as she was featured on CBS Sunday Mo
rning and the subject of major stories in Rolling Stone\, Billboard\, Past
e\, The FADER\, SPIN and more. The Associated Press referred to the album
as “another important chapter to one of the most important musical journ
 eys of the last half-century.”
