In dialogue with architects such as Pierre Charles L’Enfant and Andrew Ellicott\, George Washington ushered into creation an urban space meant to display the nation’s ideals. From its inception\, however\, the District of Columbia was a contested space in which politicians debated the architectural choices giving shape to th e city. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n About the Lecturer\n\n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\ n\nJeffrey Young is a Principal Lecturer in the Department of History at G eorgia State University. He spent his undergraduate years at Yale Universi ty and earned his Ph.D. from Emory University in 1996. He is the author of several books about slavery in the American South and has published artic les in The Journal of Southern History and The Georgia Historical Quarte rly. This unthinking “veneration for the sup posed superlative wisdom of their fathers\,” he protested\, “chains th em to their present state of barbarism and wretchedness.” Strong words\, but was American patriotism any different? In his first inaugural address \, Jefferson described the United States as the “world’s best hope\, ” a light to the nations – a belief that enabled him to dodge the ques tion of slavery.
