We host an open house every month during the semester on a Friday evening at 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. The even t is free and open to the public. Join us to hear an exciting astronomy ta lk\, watch the stars drift overhead in our state-of-the-art planetarium du ring our sky show\, and\, weather permitting\, view the real stars and pla nets through our telescopes!\n\nSeptember's Open House features Professor Hodari-Sadiki Hubbard-James for a presentation entitled\, "Are We Alone? A stronomy and Astrobiology in the ISLANDS Lab". The ISLANDS Lab (Interstell ar Search for Life Around Nearby Dwarf Stars) at Agnes Scott has spent thr ee years exploring that question from three directions. We survey hundreds of nearby stars smaller and cooler than the Sun\, seeking the calm\, stab le ones where a planet could retain its atmosphere. We grow plants in the lab under simulated starlight to test how photosynthesis functions when th e star is NOT the Sun. We are also re-examining the 1977 Wow! Signal\, whi ch remains the most powerful unexplained candidate for an extraterrestrial radio transmission ever detected.
