 s between plants as small as a trout lily and as large as a white oak.  P
 rerequisite:  Beginning Botany \nAlexandra Holland has a passion for gett
 ing people excited about the natural world through classes\, hikes\, and p
 hotography.  She graduated from Duke University and earned her master’s
  degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin.  While in Texas
 \, Alexandra managed the UTEX Culture Collection of Algae at UT Austin and
  volunteered with education programs at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower C
 enter.  Upon moving to Asheville\, she began volunteering with the NC Arb
 oretum’s youth education programs.  In 2008 she was in the first class 
 of students to be certified as Blue Ridge Naturalists.   Alexandra teach

DESCRIPTION:Grandfather Mountain is an amazing diversity hotspot for breed
 ing birds in the southern Appalachians with more than 120 species detected
  during the nesting season. From warblers to hawks to hummingbirds\, migra
 tion is a wondrous period of the year for birders and nature enthusiasts a
 like. Taught by Steve Dowlan\, a retired natural resource specialist for t
 he U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management\, this course provide
 s the opportunity to visit several locations on the mountain to learn abou
 t the diversity of migrants\, the timing and mechanics of migration\, and 
 hopefully see dozens of species using Grandfather as a staging area on the
 ir long flights to Central and South America. Our classroom program will t
 ake a deeper dive into the science of migration and some of the technology
  unlocking the secrets of bird movement. Registration opens online on July
  20 at 10 a.m.

 The Southern Appalachian Mountain region hosts an interesting combination 
 of cold-blooded reptiles\, based largely on various factors such as the di
 verse mountain elevations and the unique forest and other habitat types. S
 pecies here range from the endangered and threatened Bog Turtle and Timber
  Rattlesnake to more common species such as the Black Rat Snake and Northe
 rn Fence Lizard. Participants in this class will learn about the various r
 eptile species in western North Carolina\, their life cycles and habitats\
 , and threats and conservation efforts in place to protect them. In additi
 on\, some live mountain reptiles will be joining us as special guests. \nC
 arlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain N
 aturalists\, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educa
 tional programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staf
 f of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 yea

DESCRIPTION:Darning is a form of visible mending using only a needle and t
 hread. It can be simple or incredibly ornate\, going beyond repair to crea
 te something totally one of a kind!\nAttendees should bring an article of 
 clothing or other textile (tote bag\, pillowcase\, etc.) with a hole that 
 needs to be mended. Ideal for this project would be a lightweight fabric p
 iece (not denim). The workshop will begin with a demonstration of basic da
 rning. Attendees can then try the technique out for themselves! Embroidery
  hoops\, thread/floss\, and needles will be provided but supplies are limi
 ted. Please bring your own if possible! This is a skill that requires some
  manual dexterity but no previous sewing skills.\nIan Grout (he/him) is a 
 queer vegan activist located in Canton\, NC. He spends his days selling fa
 ncy eyeglasses\, but his real passion is in fostering community. Along wit
 h his husband\, Ian hosts a twice-monthly queer vegan brunch in Haywood Co
 unty\, and can be found the first Wednesday of every month offering free c
 ommunity notary services at Firestorm.
