DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 119th year of Etowah Fall Singing! The group t
hat gathers twice a year to sing is made up of regular\, long-time attende
es and newcomers who are encouraged to visit and join in their first shape
d-note singing. We now have a short introductory singing school that will
help beginners find their way. \nThe shaped-note system\, which was popula
r in congregations throughout the South in the nineteenth century – and
to a declining\, though still significant\, degree in the twentieth centur
y – was devised to simplify the reading of written music. This singing e
vent uses The Christian Harmony\, a shaped-note hymnal first published in
1867 by upcountry South Carolinian William Walker. \nThe Etowah Singing is
one of several in Western North Carolina. Newcomers are very welcome. Typ
ically\, singings last from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm with potluck dinner on the
grounds at noon. The introductory singing school begins at 9:15. \nEveryo
ne is welcome\, and no experience is necessary. We would be honored to hav
 e you join us!

DESCRIPTION:The Old Marshall Jail Ballad Swap is an incredible opportunity
to immerse yourself in our Appalachian Heritage. This unique event\, host
ed by Josh Copus\, Donna Ray Norton\, Sheila Kay Adams\, and Melanie Rice
celebrates the rich tradition of ballads in Southern Appalachia. Ballads a
re hauntingly beautiful stories and narrative poems passed down through or
al tradition and are told in song. This is a very casual event that we lik
e to think of as a front porch experience\, where ballad singers from acro
ss the region tell stories\, sing songs\, talk about our history\, and hav
e a great time! \nWhile ballads have been sung throughout Southern Appalac
hia\, Madison County in particular is known for its rich treasure trove of
ballads and ballad singers. When English folk song collector Cecil Sharp
visited Madison County in 1916\, he said he had found a “nest of singing
birds.” The ballad tradition in Madison County alone goes back at least
9 generations\, making it one of the oldest unbroken non-indigenous oral
traditions in the United States. \nSome of our regular Ballad Singers:  \
 n\nSheila Kay Adams \nDonna Ray Norton\nWilliam & Sarah Ritter \nBranson
  Raines\nLeila Weinstein\nSarah Songbird Burkey\nSusan Pepper\nJohn Analo
Phillips\nJudy Rhodes\nand more (you can never tell who might show up!) \
