DESCRIPTION:Learn about Flat Rock History \nTour St. John in the Wildernes
s this Summer and Fall \nFLAT ROCK\, N.C. – Exploring local history cont
inues in one of oldest churches in Western North Carolina. The Episcopal C
hurch of St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock offers guided tours of th
e 175-year-old church and churchyard. \nHeld on the third Saturdays of the
month through December\, tours start inside the Church at 11 a.m. and las
t about an hour. Additional tours are offered on the first Saturday of the
month in August and September. There are no rain dates and participants a
re encouraged to wear comfortable shoes. \nThe church docent tours are fre
e but advance reservations must be made online through the church’s webs
ite\, www.stjohnflatrock.org/tours. Space is limited for each tour. \n“W
e are so fortunate to be able to share the story of this beautiful holy pl
ace with visitors. Our history has its roots in both the mountain communit
y of Flat Rock and in coastal South Carolina\, the home of our founders an
d early congregants\,” said lead docent Polly Morrice. \nThe historicall
y significant churchyard contains graves of notable historic figures and l
ocal citizens as well as those of unnamed 19th-century enslaved persons. \
nAfter the tour ends\, participants may choose to explore the recently ope
ned Trails of St. John\, located behind the Parish Hall complex\, directly
across Rutledge Drive from the church. \n“Our aim as docents is to conv
ey what has shaped us\, both the painful and the good\, ranging from Civil
War bushwhackers to Carl Sandburg’s memorial service\,” Morrice refle
cted. “We do stress that St. John is not a museum\, but a vibrant\, welc
oming church. We welcome all who would like to make more history with us.
” \nThe church is located at 1895 Greenville Highway. For more informati
on call the church office at 828-693-9783 or visit www.stjohnflatrock.org.
  \nSt. John in the Wilderness History \nIn 1827\, Charles Baring\, a membe
r of the Baring banking family of England\, built a home in Flat Rock. He
and his wife\, Susan\, wanted a summer place to escape the oppressive heat
\, humidity\, and malaria of the South Carolina Lowcountry where they live
 d. \nAt the behest of Susan\, a devout Anglican\, Charles built a chapel o
n the property of Mountain Lodge\, their newly constructed home. The small
wooden structure soon burned down in a woods fire. In 1833\, work began o
n a second church built of handmade brick. \nIn August 1836\, the Barings
deeded their chapel to the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina\, and 20 me
mbers of the Flat Rock summer colony of Lowcountry planters and merchants
formed an Episcopal parish. In the 1890s\, St. John in the Wilderness beca
me part of the Diocese of Western North Carolina\; it is the oldest parish
in that diocese. \nWith almost all its congregation traveling home to the
Lowcountry at summer’s end\, the church operated mainly during that sea
son for its first 120 years. The Flat Rock summer community grew so rapidl
y during the 1830s and 1840s\, however\, that the parish membership outgre
w the small chapel. In the early 1850s\, the church vestry\, or governing
body\, made the decision to rebuild the church\, doubling its size. The En
glish chapel-style structure that stands today is\, with only a few minor
modifications\, the church that was completed in 1852.

DESCRIPTION:Nine weavers from throughout Western North Carolina collaborat
ed on a tapestry honoring the Blue Ridge Mountains. Susan Gaire came to ot
her female weavers in Western North Carolina with an idea: Collaborate on
a single image\, with each artist weaving her own personality into their p
anel of the tapestry. This piece was designed in early 2025\, and weaving
took place between October 2025 and March 2026. Weavers were given a gener
al color palette\, size guidelines\, and the placement of the three ridgel
ines that run continuously across the piece\, but otherwise had full creat
ive freedom to decide materials\, technique and embellishment. The result
is a nine-panel artwork that tells nine chapters of the same story. This
one-of-a-kind\, 7-foot-wide tapestry\, inspired by the Blue Ridge Mountain
 s. \nAlong with Gaire\, participating weavers are Jacqueline Fay\, Jenny Z
 ia\, Kathy DeOrnellas\, Anne Berg\, Kathy Dennison\, Madelaine Hairrell\,
Stephanie Lyon\, and Betty Hilton-Nash. \nLearn more about this exquisite

eal way to do this one. Nobody needs to bring a friend. You show up by you
rself\, we put you on a team of four\, and you spend the afternoon with th
 em.**\n\n**You get a phone\, a team of four\, and 75 minutes on Haywood Ro
ad.**\n\nThis is a photo challenge\, not a walking tour. Each team gets a
card with a dozen very specific\, slightly ridiculous challenges scattered
up and down Haywood Road in West Asheville — track down a certain pair
of country-and-drag icons painted on the side of a salon\, get a staff rec
ommendation at a record store\, talk your team into the strangest group ph
oto you can manage. Points for each one. Bonus points for style.\n\nTeams
are drawn at the start\, so you will be paired with people you have not me
 t. That is the entire point. It is much easier to talk to strangers when t
he four of you are trying to find a mural. Most people here will not know
anyone either — that is true of nearly every Transplants event.\n\nThen
we come back to Archetype West\, score everything out loud\, and hand out
 some entirely unserious prizes.\n\n**The Plan:**\n\n• 2:00 PM — Meet a
t Archetype Brewing West\, 265 Haywood Rd. Grab a drink\, get sorted into
teams of four\, pick up your challenge card.\n\n• 2:30 PM — Teams head
out on foot. The play zone runs along Haywood Road between Archetype and
 Firestorm Books — a little under a mile each way.\n\n• 3:45 PM — Bac
 k at Archetype. Teams turn in their photos.\n\n• 4:00 PM — Scoring\, p
rizes\, and food. Gan Shan West's kitchen opens at 4:00\, so this is the e
ating part of the afternoon.\n\n• 5:00 PM — Official wrap. Stay as lon
g as you like.\n\n**What to Know:**\n\n• Solo is the default. Teams are
assigned on arrival\, so you will never be standing around trying to join
a group. If you do bring a friend\, we will usually split you onto differe
nt teams — you will both meet more people that way.\n\n• If you are ru
nning late\, just text or comment and we will slot you into a team when yo
u get there.\n\n• Free. No ticket\, no buy-in. Food and drinks are pay-y
our-own\, and nothing on the challenge card requires spending money.\n\n
 • All you need is a phone with a working camera and shoes you can walk t
wo miles in.\n\n• Archetype has free on-site parking\, which is a real g
ift on Haywood Road on a Sunday.\n\n• Archetype does not have its own ki
tchen. You order from the neighbors around the shared courtyard — Gan Sh
an West opens at 4:00 PM\, and Pizza Mind and OWL Bakery are right there t
 oo.\n\n• There is a front patio\, a back patio\, and a rooftop\, so we w
ill have room to spread out. The brewery is dog-friendly\, though a 75-min
ute walk in the middle of the afternoon is not ideal for every dog.\n\n•
Haywood Road is being resurfaced through November. Crews work overnight r
ather than Sunday afternoons\, but you may hit a freshly paved stretch or
a crosswalk under construction — watch your step at intersections.\n\n
 • Rain plan: if it is genuinely pouring we will call it. A little drizzl
e and we go anyway.\n\n**Why This Event:**\n\nMost ways of meeting people
involve standing in a room holding a drink and hoping. This one hands you
a task and three teammates instead. You will finish the afternoon knowing
a stretch of your own city better than you did at lunch\, and you will hav
e actually talked to people — because you had to\, to find the mural.\n\
nNew to Asheville or ten years in\, knowing everyone or knowing nobody\, c
 ome play.

\n\n \n\nSister Sadie Bio:\n\nWhat started as an accidental band became a
  force. GRAMMY-nominated. IBMA-decorated. Opry-validated. But for all the\
naccolades\, they were often reduced to one line: an all-female bluegrass
band. True—but never the point. Sister Sadie has always\nbeen about the
music. The fire. The truth.\n\n\nTheir new album\, All Will Be Well\, is t
hat truth—loud\, fearless\, and free. You’ll hear echoes of bluegrass\
, but what rises is\nsomething bigger: country with claws\, Americana with
muscle\, gospel grit and raw storytelling.\n\n\nFrom the haunting “Prod
igal Daughter” to the swagger of “Do What You Want” and the aching b
eauty of “If I Don’t Have You\,”\nthese six women are not performing
roles—they’re telling you who they are.\n\n\nThis is Sister Sadie\, e
volved: bold\, bonded\, and braver than ever. They're not asking for space
 . They're taking it.\n\n\nAnd they’re just getting started.\n\n \n\nAbou

DESCRIPTION:Katie Wigglesworth\, a textile artist from California\, and Le
slie Smith\, a book artist from North Carolina\, met during a winter resid
ency at Penland School of Crafts. Their two practices\, though inherently
different\, have parallels and similarities\, and during their time at the
winter residency\, they began to notice these linkages. It was clear that
their disciplines were exploring in the same vein\, during a subsequent w
inter residency at Penland\, the two began research in the Penland archive
with the idea of composing a collaborative body of work that would be int
ertwined with the history of the craft school. The archive was packed with
yellowed correspondence on onion skin\, notebooks of weaving notation\, a
nd weaving samples. This was the perfect nourishment for a printer and a w
eaver. \nThe founder of Penland\, Lucy Morgan\, began the school to teach
Appalachian women to weave at a time when the craft had almost died out. T
he goal was for women to learn to weave\, make home goods\, and sell them\
; it was a way for them to earn a supplemental income. Once the plan was i
n motion\, Morgan often bought the woven pieces from the women before she
knew how or where she would sell them. She was so sure of the importance a
nd value of the work at Penland that she often leapt before she looked. Sm
ith and Wigglesworth were very moved and inspired by Morgan’s faith in t
he idea of Penland and the way she plunged headlong into the work\, again
and again\, without the luxury of certainty. This is the leap all artists
