DESCRIPTION:MICHIGAN TECH ART SERIES EVENT\n\nNeoliberal Loops is a body o
f work created by Emma C. Johnson that explores neoliberalism\, postfemini
sm\, economic precarity\, and how our understanding of these phenomena are
mediated through visual culture. Her work is concerned with mundane and i
diosyncratic details that are telling of a larger picture of the world. Sh
 e works primarily in painting\, printmaking\, photography\, video\, sound\
, and text. Whatever medium the idea demands is what determines the materi
ality of the finished work. \n\nThe Neoliberal Loops project features thre
e related works on the theme of financial crisis. This includes music/soun
 d and digital video\, photography\, text on a moving LED lights screen\, a
nd letterpress on paper. This exhibition is an opportunity to reflect on c
apitalism\, representation\, and feminism\, and grapple with this material
in a visceral way. Emma invites viewers to reflect on neoliberalism\, whi
ch often seems as natural as the air we breathe. This opens up a dialog ab
out how representations of neoliberalism shapes our understanding of it an
d how we might approach our understanding of it and other possibilities fo
 r living differently. This project brings Emma's writing\, art\, music\, a
nd theoretical background together when these areas are typically compartm
entalized.\n\nThis exhibition was also an opportunity for Emma to receive
guidance from Michigan Technological University’s Math and Music Lab (MM
 L) co-directors Robert Schnieder and Michael Maxwell. Combining math\, vis
ual and performing arts\, and the humanities opens up possibilities. Emma'
s time at MTU was a unique opportunity to combine disciplines to culminate
in an interdisciplinary project.\n\nThings to know\n\nEXHIBIT DATES | Sep

DESCRIPTION:Nicole E. Trujillo-Pagán discusses her new book\, Detroit Nev
er Left: Black Space\, White Borders\, Latino Crossings.\n\n\n\nDetroit se
emed to experience an explosive rebirth following its bankruptcy\, the lar
gest in US municipal history. It was as if the slate had been wiped clean
and the color line erased in the nation’s largest Black city. Detroit Ne
ver Left tackles important contradictions in the post-bankruptcy era. Urba
n youth do not want to be moved out or isolated in their barrio. Similarl
y\, many Detroiters feel spatial changes happen “to” instead of “for
” them. Detroit Never Left presents dispatches from the frontlines of pr
ivatization’s war on the people of Detroit. Dr. Trujillo-Pagán shows ho
w policies that purport to solve the city’s problems actually reward the
profiteers and predatory lenders who caused them in the first place.\n\n\
n\nThis event includes a signing with books for sale.\n\n\n\nThis event is

with no included fees in person at The Ark during box office hours. \nForg
ed through the extreme highs and lows that come with living\, Time Will Te
ll is the album that Devon Gilfillian has been preparing to make his entir
e life. His third studio album was recorded in Nashville’s legendary RCA
Studio A\, live to tape on varispeed\, with mostly single vocal takes. Gi
lfillian wrote and produced with a mighty team including longtime drummer
and friend Jonathan Smalt and Neal H Pogue (Tyler the Creator\, OutKast) a

about his own failure and frailty. No end is ever easy\, and what else is
there in life than to go through? To get to where we’re going\, we’ve
