 ternative understandings of belonging.\n\nJyoti Puri is a feminist sociolo
 gist whose research and teaching primarily focuses on structural and insti
 tutional forms of regulation from the perspectives of marginalized subject
 s. Through her books and numerous essays\, she explores how states and nat
 ions govern bodies\, genders\, sexualities\, and death\; examines the tran
 snational aspects of governance shaped by colonial histories and postcolon

DESCRIPTION:Why is small-town America overwhelmingly white? While we know 
 much about the history of Jim Crow in the South and increasingly in the ur
 ban North and South\, we know little about the\nracial system that emerged
  in small towns outside the South. Focusing on towns in Indiana and Napa V
 alley\, California\, this talk considers how a culture of expulsion became
  a distinguishing feature of Jim Crow in small towns. Tensions related to 
 migration\, labor\, and morality fueled racial discourses and practices as
  expulsion quietly and legally became part of the routine of daily life in
  small-town America.\n\nStephen A. Berrey is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professo
 r and Associate Professor of American Culture and History at the Universit
 y of Michigan. He is chair of the James W. Loewen Foundation\, and Directo
 r of the Sundown Towns Project (https://justice.tougaloo.edu)\, a public e
 ngagement initiative begun by Loewen to document places that have intentio
 nally excluded some racial groups. He is the author of The Jim Crow Routin
 e: Everyday Performances of Race\, Civil Rights\, and Segregation in Missi
 ssippi (2015). With the Singing Justice Collective\, a collaboration of sc

DESCRIPTION:Interfacial function is often attributed to the few atomic lay
 ers at a boundary. For mixed-dimensional interfaces\, however\, how far th
 at influence extends depends strongly on direction. The same boundary can 
 act locally along one crystallographic direction and nonlocally along anot
 her\, reaching tens to hundreds of nanometers into adjoining materials. Wh
 ile theory has long recognized such nonlocality\, directly resolving it at
  functioning interfaces has remained challenging. I argue that the localit
 y of an interface\, the distance over which its influence reaches\, is not
  a fixed material property but a design variable revealed by resolving the
  interfacial response in momentum\, space\, and time. My group achieves th
 is using momentum-resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy\, transient a
 bsorption spectroscopy\, and time-resolved photoemission microscopy. I wil
 l discuss two case studies. In MoOCl2\, an anisotropic van der Waals cryst
 al\, the interface extends far along one in-plane direction while remainin
 g confined along the orthogonal one\, making a single boundary simultaneou
 sly local and nonlocal. In cobalt and iron oxides\, the balance is set ins
 tead by the material: regions of local bonding and defect trapping can dom
 inate in one oxide\, while strain and interfacial fields carry influence a
 cross buried interfaces in another. Together\, these examples show that th
 e role of locality at an interface can be tuned by direction\, structure\,
  and composition\, providing a route to engineer light–matter interactio
 ns for photocatalysis and quantum emitters.

DESCRIPTION:The Political Ecology Workshop (PEW) is an interdisciplinary s
 pace for scholars at all career stages with interests in political ecology
  and related critical approaches to the study of environment-society inter
 actions. PEW brings together a range of divisions across campus\, includin
 g Anthropology\, History\, Environment and Sustainability\, Political Scie
 nce\, Sociology\, and all Area Studies departments and programs. We have f
 ounded a collaborative\, multidisciplinary community with a shared investm
 ent questioning how environments and societies are co-produced and the way
 s in which power and inequality impact the dynamics and understandings of 
 this co-production. We have run PEW as an RIW for two years and all the wo
 rkshops have been possible from our committed participants from diverse fi
 elds. This year\, we intend to develop our membership further by inviting 
 scholars from broader fields and promoting PEW on listservs across campus.
 \nPEW supports graduate student development\, including for earlier-stage 
 students seeking interdisciplinary conversations as they develop environme
 nt-society research projects and later-stage students seeking to incorpora
 te political ecology into their work. PEW emphasizes dedicated time for gr
 aduate students to receive feedback on their work and facilitates faculty-
 student mentorship. It allows students to access a range of critical envir
 onmental studies perspectives they might not have encountered through cour
 sework or departmental activities\, and to grow from the feedback and insi
 ght of faculty and peers who share this commitment to interdisciplinary sc
 holarship and professional development.

DESCRIPTION:This is a story about a lesser-known aspect of our Roman inher
 itance. The founders looked to the Romans as an ideal for their own republ
 ican aspirations: institutions that tempered the excesses of the *populus*
 \; statesmen like Cicero who projected an unflinching defense of the Repub
 lic\; and stories that described their own experiment of strangers fleeing
  from their homes to carve out a new community from the wilderness. But th
 e United States also inherited another aspect of Rome that grew out of the
 se rugged\, founding stories. It was not the enlightened\, republican body
  but the gladiatorial body that emerged as a rival conception of what an A
 merican looks like. The gladiatorial body\, which received prominence in o
 utlawed\, bare-knuckle boxing\, as well as the theater\, was physically im
 posing\, violent\, anti-intellectual\, and brash. This talk takes us insid
 e the worlds of the gladiator and bare-knuckle boxer to understand their a
 llure as images of the citizen body.\n\nJoin us in Room 125 of the Kelsey 
 Museum’s Newberry Hall to hear from Dr. Dean Hammer\, the John W. Wetzel
  Professor of Classics and Professor of Government at Franklin and Marshal
 l College. Light refreshments will be available.\n\nThis lecture is being 
 presented in connection with the Kelsey Museum’s temporary exhibition\, 
 “‘There Are in America\, No Kings\, Princes\, or Nobles’: Caesar\, C

 y an Associate Professor of History and African American and Africana Stud
 ies at the University of Kentucky. She is also the director of the Central
  Kentucky Slavery Initiative. Dr. Holden is the author of Surviving Southa
 mpton: African American Women and Resistance in Nat Turner’s Community (
 University of Illinois Press)\, winner of the 2021 James H. Broussard Firs
 t Book Prize from the Society for Historians of the Early American Republi
 c. Surviving Southampton was also shortlisted for the MAAH Stone Book Awar
 d. \nDr. Holden is engaged in a number of digital humanities projects. Sh
 e is the co-organizer of the Queering Slavery Working Group (#QSWG) with J
 essica M. Johnson (Johns Hopkins). Dr. Holden currently serves as a lead f
 aculty member for the Freedom on the Move Project\, an open-source crowdso
 urced database of advertisements for self-emancipated people (often called
  runaway ads). She is also an advisory board member for the Chronicle of A
 frican Americans in the Horse Industry\, a digital humanities project focu
 sed on collecting\, preserving\, and making accessible histories of Africa
 n American involvement in America’s many horse industries.  \nDr. Hold
 en’s writing has been published in Slavery and Abolition: A Journal of S
 lave and Post-Slave Studies\, Perspectives on History\, Process: A Blog fo
 r American History\, The Rumpus\, and Electric Marronage. She also blogs f
 or Black Perspectives\, the official blog of the African American Intellec
 tual History Society (AAIHS)\, and The Junto: A Group Blog on Early Americ
 an History. Her research and teaching interests include African-American h
 istory\, women's and gender history\, the history of the American South\, 
 and U.S. history (pre-1865). \nDr. Holden serves as a faculty adviser and
  consultant on several public history and digital humanities projects incl
 uding Freedom on the Move (a digital archive of runaway slave ads)\; Black
  Horsemen of the Kentucky Turf (an exhibit chronicling the intersecting hi

DESCRIPTION:Learning to Read from Mahāyāna Sūtras\n\nWhy read Mahāyān
 a sūtras? These seemingly fantastical\, overtly manipulative\, frankly ba
 ffling ancient texts might seem to have little to attract contemporary rea
 ders. I will argue\, however\, that they have much to teach us about the a
 ct of reading. Because they assume a sacrificial cosmology in which readin
 g is a ritual for transforming self and world\, they help us to recognize 
 and question the features of our own technologically informed cosmology of
  reading. In our time\, when reading is often reduced to information trans
 fer or an optional leisure activity\, Mahāyāna sūtras show us how word-
 born worlds enter and alter our bodyminds. In the process\, they challenge
  us to rethink\, and experience\, literature differently. Learning to read
  Mahāyāna sūtras—and learning to read from Mahāyāna sūtras—deman
 ds that we recognize the ritual aspects of literature\, Buddhist and beyon
 d.\n\nBiography\n\nNatalie Gummer is Professor of Philosophy and Religious
  Studies and holds the Edwin F. Wilde\, Jr. Distinguished Service Chair at
  Beloit College\, where she also directs the Center for Integrative Learni
 ng. Her research examines textual and ritual practices in premodern Mahāy
 āna Buddhist literary cultures\, with particular interests in performance
 \, translation\, and the contemporary ethical possibilities of Buddhist li
 terature. She received her Ph.D. from Harvard University.

 tion’s founding to celebrate\, debate\, revise\, and perform the story o
 f the United States. For We Hold These Truths\, her new exhibition opening
  at UMMA in October 2026\, artist Holly Bass looks to three of those anniv
 ersary years—1876\, 1976\, and 2026 to explore how national ideals are s
 taged in public\, preserved in private\, and passed down through generatio
 ns. \n\nIn this talk\, Bass will discuss the ideas behind We Hold These Tr
 uths\, her process of transforming UMMA’s iconic Apse into an environmen
 t\, and the role art plays in helping communities consider these varied hi
 stories. Drawing from her practice across performance\, visual art\, theat
 er\, writing\, and engagement\, Bass will offer a preview of the exhibitio
 n and explain how historic home museums inspired this new body of work.\n\
 nBass is the 2026 Roman J. Witt Artist In Residence and an award-winning a

 hy and dance and a 2021–22 Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow. She perfo
 rmed at the 2022 Venice Biennale as part of Loophole of Retreat\, Simone L
 eigh’s special project for the U.S. Pavilion. She regularly contributes 
 book reviews to the New York Times and was the first journalist to put the
  term “hip hop theater” into print in a 1999 article for American Thea
 tre magazine. Bass directed an arts program for adjudicated teens in DC’
 s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services from 2014 to 2019. From 2019
  to 2025\, she served as national director of Turnaround Arts at the Kenne
 dy Center\, a program that increases access to the arts in under-resourced
  elementary and middle schools. She studied modern dance under Viola Farbe
 r and creative writing at Sarah Lawrence College before earning her Master
 ’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. In

 one. In three out of four civil cases in state courts\, at least one side 
 has no lawyer\, and the judges and lawyers inside the system are burning o
 ut. We will never hire enough lawyers to close this gap.\n\nEnter artifici
 al intelligence. AI tools can now explain legal concepts in plain language
 \, draft documents\, and guide people through procedures that once require
