These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios re lated to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle proce ss allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexiti es with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collec tive building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can alw ays pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. I also propose an interaction event study to investigate the dyna mic effects and find evidence that these effects show zero pretrends and h ave positive dynamic effects. I embed these estimates in an Eaton-Kortum m odel with island geography and show that complementarity generates a super additivity premium\, implying coordinated port investments dominate sequen tial upgrades. After earning her Bachelor’s and Mas ter’s degrees from Seoul National University and her Ph.D. from New York University\, she served on the faculty at the Hong Kong University of Sci ence and Technology (HKUST) from 2014 to 2022\, where she observed another defining wave of pro-democracy activism before joining U-M.\n\nDavid Doli nger / Former Peace Corps Volunteer\nDavid L. Dolinger is a scientist and global health professional currently working in India. He has played key r oles in the development and commercialization of diagnostic solutions with a focus on their practical implementation and use in low- and middle-inco me countries. His work sits at the intersection of laboratory science\, re gulatory rigor\, and a long-standing commitment to social justice and pati ent-centered care. Over the years he has also taken on advisory and collab orative roles with diagnostic manufacturers and global health partners foc used on expanding access to high-quality testing in low- and middle-income countries. \n\nHowever\, this passion and drive would not have fermented to the level if it had not been for his life-forming experiences as a Peac e corps volunteer in the Republic of Korea. At the young age of 22\, he tr avelled for the first time outside of the United States\, landing in south Jeolla province in the small county of Yeongam. He worked in the local he alth center focusing on tuberculosis control. It was there that he started to understand how diagnostic tests are the foundation of good health care . It was his experiences in and participation in the May 18 Democratizatio n Movement\, in Gwangju that grounded him and has driven him through his l ife to utilize his talents and understanding of diagnostics to focus on th ose that are marginalized and ignored.\n\nNa Kyung-taek / Former Photojour nalist\nNa Kyung-taek\, former head of the Yonhap News Bureau for Gwangju and Jeonnam\, began his career in journalism in 1967. His unwavering j ournalistic integrity earned him both the Courageous Journalist Award and the Korea Journalist Award.\n\nFollowing his retirement\, Mr. Na continued to serve the public through university lectures and welfare foundation wo rk. He has remained dedicated to sharing the historical significance of Ma y 18 globally\, authoring books such as *When That Day in May Comes Again and We Saw*\, and hosting photo exhibitions across South Korea and interna tionally\, including in Germany and the United States.\n\nSohl Lee / Stony Brook University\nSohl Lee is associate professor of art history at Stony Brook University (SUNY)\, specializing in modern and contemporary Asian a rt\, decolonial visual culture\, socially engaged art\, and ecological art history\, with a particular interest in oceanic and transpacific framewor ks. As an interdisciplinary performance and media historian of twentieth- and twenty-first-century South Korea\, her research centers on cultures of democracy in contemporary South Korea. Her teaching is at the intersections of Korean studies\, Asian diasporic studies\, and theatr e\, performance\, and media studies. Kim is currently working on her book manuscript entitled *Making P’an for a New World: The Kwangju Uprising\, Women\, and the Performativity of South Korean Democracy*. We study this question in the context of India's 2005 Specia l Economic Zones Act. Using large language models\, we reconstruct each zo ne's regulatory history over the last two decades. We assemble a novel dat aset of exact zone boundaries and link it to India's 600\,000 villages cen sus data and geocoded addresses for 2.9 million firms. We compare location s near zones that start operations with those near zones that have not yet started. We find that operational zones generate substantial local activi ty. Sales rise by 35 percent for firms inside the zone and 6 percent for n earby firms\, and these gains persist even after the tax holiday expires. In host villages\, non-farm employment rises by 28 percent and the non-far m employment share by 4.3 percentage points over a ten-year period. Employ ment growth in host villages is concentrated in upstream industries supply ing goods and services to firms inside the zones. Consistent with these de mand linkages\, new-firm entry near the zone shifts toward industries more exposed to demand from SEZ firms. These patterns are consistent with spil lovers from zone openings reaching firms that receive no zone benefits. In this seminar\, I will discuss our lab’s efforts to under stand and engineer these behaviors across living and synthetic systems. Th e first part of the talk will focus on cellular mechanobiology\, with an e mphasis on cellular unjamming in three-dimensional environments. While unj amming transitions have been widely studied in collective cell migration a nd tissue remodeling\, their regulation in 3D remains less understood. I w ill describe our work investigating how cells transition between solid-lik e and fluid-like collective behaviors in physiologically relevant environm ents\, and how these transitions are coupled to cell-generated forces\, ma trix interactions\, and multicellular organization.\n\nThe second part of the talk will shift toward bottom-up synthetic biology and the constructio n of synthetic cells that can sense and respond to environmental cues. I w ill present our work developing pH-sensing synthetic cells\, designed to d etect chemical changes in their surroundings and produce measurable bioche mical or physical responses. I will also discuss our efforts to engineer d esiccation-resistant synthetic cells\, motivated by the need to create rob ust cell-like systems that can survive extreme or fluctuating environmenta l conditions. Together\, these projects highlight how principles from cell mechanobiology\, membrane biophysics\, and synthetic biology can be integ rated to understand the design rules of living systems and to build progra mmable\, resilient cellular mimics. \nBio:\nAllen Liu received a B.Sc. with Honors in Biochemistry from the University of British Columbia in 20 01 and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University of California\, Berkeley in 2007\, followed by postdoctoral training at The Scripps Research Instit ute in La Jolla. He established his research group in 2012 and is currentl y Professor of Mechanical Engineering\, Biomedical Engineering\, and Bioph ysics\, as well as Associate Chair for Graduate Education in Mechanical En gineering\, at the University of Michigan.\n\nHis research focuses on cell ular mechanotransduction and bottom-up synthetic biology\, integrating app roaches from quantitative cell biology\, synthetic biology\, biophysics\, and microfluidics. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and delivered more than 100 invited presentations. The same boundary can act locally along one crystallographic direction and nonlocally along anot her\, reaching tens to hundreds of nanometers into adjoining materials. Wh ile theory has long recognized such nonlocality\, directly resolving it at functioning interfaces has remained challenging. I argue that the localit y of an interface\, the distance over which its influence reaches\, is not a fixed material property but a design variable revealed by resolving the interfacial response in momentum\, space\, and time. My group achieves th is using momentum-resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy\, transient a bsorption spectroscopy\, and time-resolved photoemission microscopy. I wil l discuss two case studies. In MoOCl2\, an anisotropic van der Waals cryst al\, the interface extends far along one in-plane direction while remainin g confined along the orthogonal one\, making a single boundary simultaneou sly local and nonlocal. In cobalt and iron oxides\, the balance is set ins tead by the material: regions of local bonding and defect trapping can dom inate in one oxide\, while strain and interfacial fields carry influence a cross buried interfaces in another. Together\, these examples show that th e role of locality at an interface can be tuned by direction\, structure\, and composition\, providing a route to engineer light–matter interactio ns for photocatalysis and quantum emitters. The founders looked to the Romans as an ideal for their own republ ican aspirations: institutions that tempered the excesses of the *populus* \; statesmen like Cicero who projected an unflinching defense of the Repub lic\; and stories that described their own experiment of strangers fleeing from their homes to carve out a new community from the wilderness. But th e United States also inherited another aspect of Rome that grew out of the se rugged\, founding stories. It was not the enlightened\, republican body but the gladiatorial body that emerged as a rival conception of what an A merican looks like. The gladiatorial body\, which received prominence in o utlawed\, bare-knuckle boxing\, as well as the theater\, was physically im posing\, violent\, anti-intellectual\, and brash. This talk takes us insid e the worlds of the gladiator and bare-knuckle boxer to understand their a llure as images of the citizen body.\n\nJoin us in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum’s Newberry Hall to hear from Dr. Dean Hammer\, the John W. Because they assume a sacrificial cosmology in which readin g is a ritual for transforming self and world\, they help us to recognize and question the features of our own technologically informed cosmology of reading. In our time\, when reading is often reduced to information trans fer or an optional leisure activity\, Mahāyāna sūtras show us how word- born worlds enter and alter our bodyminds. In the process\, they challenge us to rethink\, and experience\, literature differently. Drawing from her practice across performance\, visual art\, theat er\, writing\, and engagement\, Bass will offer a preview of the exhibitio n and explain how historic home museums inspired this new body of work.\n\ nBass is the 2026 Roman J.
