DESCRIPTION:Robots are among the most challenging automated systems to bui
ld because they must operate in the complex and unpredictable physical wor
ld. Unlike software-only AI tools\, robots require mechanical design\, com
 ponent fabrication\, electrical systems\, sensing\, control\, safety\, and
programming to work together as a single integrated system. A robot that
can navigate a room\, pick up an object\, or respond to a person depends n
ot only on algorithms\, but also on sensors\, motors\, materials\, control
systems\, and careful engineering tradeoffs.\n\n\n\nWhat does it actually
take to build a robot from scratch? How do designers decide what componen
ts it should have\, how it should move\, and what kind of intelligence it
needs? And when a robot fails\, how do engineers determine whether the pro
blem lies in its hardware\, software\, or overall design? Join library sta
ff for a conversation with Ann Arbor Public School students about how robo
ts are designed\, built\, and tested\, and why making them work reliably i
n the real world remains such a difficult challenge.\n\n\n\nPanelists incl
ude:\n\n\n\nZara Burzo is a senior at Skyline Highschool in Ann Arbor. She
has been a member of FIRST robotics team 3322 for four years\, serving as
CNC Lead and on the fabrication and the design teams. During her time on
the team\, 3322 has qualified for the FIRST World Championship twice and a
dvanced to the Michigan State Championship each year. She has co-authored
two research papers exploring artificial intelligence and its real-world i
mplications. As a student in Skyline’s Design\, Technology\, and Environ
mental Planning magnet program\, she has taken advanced coursework in comp
uter science and engineering. She has been coding from a young age\, and b
egan teaching programming classes while in middle school.\n\n\n\nRaphael F
ournier is entering his fourth year on Skyline’s robotics team and his s
econd year as team captain. He is a FIRST Leadership Award Semi-Finalist a
nd varsity track hurdler and distance runner. Raphael has personal interes
ts in computer science\, industrial design\, and electrical systems design
. He is currently developing an open-source program for rapid prototyping
and mechanism design for his FIRST robotics team\, aiming to make system d
esign easier\, faster\, and more accessible to roboticists of all skillset
s.\n\n\n\nRada Mihalcea is the Janice M. Jenkins Professor of Computer Sci
ence and Engineering at the University of Michigan and the Director of the
Michigan Artificial Intelligence Lab. Her research interests are in natur
al language processing\, with a focus on multimodal processing and computa
tional social sciences. She is an ACM Fellow\, an ACL Fellow\, a AAAI Fell
ow\, a member of the American Academy for Arts and Sciences\, and a former
President of the Association for Computational Linguistics. She is the re
cipient of a Sarah Goddard Power award (2019) for her contributions to div
ersity in science\, and the recipient of a Presidential Early Career Award
for Scientists and Engineers awarded by President Obama (2009).\n\n\n\nTh
is event is in partnership with the Michigan AI Lab.\n\n\n\nThis event is
for Teens and Adults.\n\n\n\nHeld in the 4th Floor Program Room.
