DESCRIPTION:Angela Violi has been named the Dennis Assanis Collegiate Prof
essor of Engineering.\nLecture Title: From Fire to Life: Engineering Matte
 r Across Scales\nAbstract \nThis seminar reflects on a scientific career s
haped by contingency\, persistence\, and the search for mechanisms—begin
ning with combustion and extending toward nanoparticles and biological int
erfaces. Using molecular simulation\, kinetic modeling\, and multiscale co
mputation\, the work reveals how reaction pathways\, transport\, and parti
cle growth govern combustion chemistry\, nanoparticle formation\, and inte
ractions at complex interfaces\, where the most important events are often
too small and too fast to observe directly. This mechanistic perspective
extends beyond flames toward engineered particles and health-relevant mate
rials designed for increasingly complex environments. The unifying thread
is the use of molecular insight to understand mechanisms\, guide design\,
and connect fundamental processes to applications in energy\, environment\
, and health. \nBio \nAngela Violi is the Dennis Assanis Collegiate Profes
sor at the University of Michigan\, where she is also the Arthur F. Thurna
u Professor and Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Mechanic
al Engineering. She holds appointments in Mechanical Engineering\, Chemica
l Engineering\, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science\, Applied Phys
ics\, and the Biophysics Program. Her research lies at the intersection of
  combustion\, nanoscience\, molecular simulation\, and biological systems\
, with a focus on using computational methods to understand how molecular-
scale processes determine the formation\, transformation\, and function of
particles and materials. \nVioli received her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemical
Engineering from the University of Naples “Federico II” in Italy. Bef
ore joining the University of Michigan faculty in 2006\, she held research
appointments at the University of Utah\, and at a Department of Energy AS
CI center focused on science-based simulations of accidental fires and exp
losions. \nHer work has made foundational contributions to computational n
anoscience in combustion\, including multiscale approaches to carbonaceous
nanoparticle formation and atomistic descriptions of particle inception a
nd growth. Her research has also addressed reaction mechanisms for novel f
uels\, combustion-generated nanoparticles and their environmental and heal
th effects\, and interactions between engineered nanomaterials and biologi
cal systems. \nIn 2019\, she led a U-M BlueSky Initiative that expanded he
r research into a new interdisciplinary direction\, bringing together expe
 rtise in engineering\, medicine\, microbiology\, chemistry\, and computati
onal science to explore nanoparticle design for health-relevant applicatio
ns. \nShe has delivered numerous invited\, keynote\, plenary\, and disting
uished lectures internationally and has mentored research scientists\, stu
dents\, and postdoctoral researchers across multiple engineering and scien
ce disciplines. \nHer honors include the University of Michigan College of
Engineering Research Excellence Award\, the Arthur F. Thurnau Professorsh
ip\, selection as U-M’s nominee for the Michigan Distinguished Professor
of the Year competition\, the ASME George Westinghouse Silver Medal\, the
NSF CAREER Award\, and election as a Fellow of the Combustion Institute.
 \n  \n  \nThe lecture will be followed by a reception from 4:00 – 5:00
  PM. \nRSVP by September 4
