DESCRIPTION:Jim Cogswell: Hands on Fire\n\n**August 31 to October 9\, 2026
 **\n**Public Reception: Friday\, September 18\, 4:30 to 6:30 pm**\n\nJim C
ogswell’s Hands on Fire is a solo exhibition of mixed media drawings at
the Residential College Gallery at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor
. The exhibition features sixty works on paper completed between 2024 and
2026.\n\nThis body of work responds to Greek Cypriot filmmaker Michael Cac
oyannis’ cinematic adaptations of three tragedies by Euripides dealing w
ith the Trojan War and its aftermath: Electra (1962)\, The Trojan Women (1
971)\, and Iphigenia (1977). The work is in close conversation with Vinyl
Euripides (2022)\, Cogswell’s adhesive vinyl installation on three floor
s of the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in Athens\, Greece\, which also res
ponded to the cinematic trilogy. By following Cacoyannis’ adaptations\,
Cogswell builds on a cross-cultural history of restaging these tragedies t
o examine the human suffering caused by war\, imperial overreach\, and abu
se of power\; and the dehumanizing consequences of revenge as a course of
justice.\n\nWithin each drawing multiple scenes from the three narratives
are overlaid within single frames\, suggesting the unseen entanglements th
at bind these ancient stories into such a persistent vision of our human p
osition.\n\nThe grid of paintings encircling the gallery proposes a linear
narrative but delivers instead a sequence that loops and turns on itself\
, a stuck frame that stutters until bursting in flames. The grid also evok
es the net that is a central feature of the series--the web of fate and ci
rcumstance that governs each of our lives\, that determines who we are and
what is possible for us at any given moment in history.\n\nThe drawings a
re also characterized by a repeated motif of hands as consuming flames. Ha
nds have unlimited expressive and narrative potential. They testify to the
centrality of making in the development of human cognition. They are remi
nders of the constructed world and the laborers responsible for bringing i
t into being. We use hands as a form of communication to shape and express
our inner states. Hands teach us to feel and to reason\, to count and to
indicate. They give us agency\, as creators but also as destroyers. They g
ive form to our willingness to act in the world\, in greed or compassion.\
n\n---\n\n**This exhibition is made possible with funding from the Stamps
School of Art & Design and the University of Michigan Office of Research.*
*\n\nFrom the Artist\n\nI am grateful to the Modern Greek Program in the D
epartment of Classical Studies\, College of Literature\, Science\, and the
Arts at the University of Michigan\, for their ongoing support for my res

DESCRIPTION:Real experiences. Real Voices. Real Stories. Detroit’s accla
imed Sofa Stories theater project comes to Ypsilanti for the first time.\n
\nFeaturing three short films interspersed with original monologues\, Sofa
Stories amplifies the stories of young people impacted by housing insecur
ity or homelessness who may have resorted to couch-surfing as a means to s
urvive. Hear moments of joy\, resilience\, and connection\, and not just h
ardship — the person who showed up for them\, or the person working insi
de a difficult system who genuinely cared.\n\nThrough the power of theater
and film\, Every Soul Arts inspires empathy\, dialogue\, and community ac
tion. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned from the young people I wor
 k with\, it’s that they’re remarkably resilient and resourceful…and
that’s a lesson worth learning from.” — Andrew Morton\, Artistic Dir
 ector and Sofa Stories creator

DESCRIPTION:Hailing from Kennett\, Missouri\, David Nail is well-respected
up and down Music Row. Some might even call him a “tour de force” as
his songs pull no punches in evoking the demons with which he has wrestled
  through much of his life. \n\nThe GRAMMY-nominated multi-platinum singer/
 songwriter’s early releases\, I’m About To Come Alive\, The Sound Of A
Million Dreams\, I’m A Fire and Fighter\, ignited his reputation as an
innovator and creative risk-taker yet left Nail feeling restless. This led
to the departure of the only record company home he’d ever known\, MCA
Nashville\, where he’d formed friendships that endure even now. Through
dealing with his own journey of mental health and the feeling of needing t
o “rebel against what people expect you to be\,” Nail began making his
most “organic” work to date\, David Nail & The Well Ravens\, with Jas
on Hall and Andrew Petroff. That project liberated Nail and propelled him
into his next adventure. Writing solo for the next few months led to his d
ebut solo independent EP Oh\, Mother\, a reflective piece of work. Of the
title track\, Rolling Stone noted that “the song creeps in like a sunris
e — quiet\, restrained cello and keys are the only underpinning for Nail
’s powerful vocals at first. But then it slowly builds to something more
massive and majestic.” That release was followed by Bootheel 2020 and B
ootheel 2021\, projects dedicated to the singer/songwriter’s hometown in
the “bootheel” of Missouri. Nail released an EP titled Best of Me in
2023 and the title track has seen heavy press support and country radio ai
rplay. 2024 brought more touring than ever\, two great single releases “
If I Could Call” and “Why” featuring Aubrie Sellers. \n\nNail plans
on releasing the start of an excitingly different and elevated album proje
ct this year leaving behind any self-imposed restrictions. In Nail’s own
words\, “My philosophy has always been\, I just hope to have a good eno
ugh year that I can have a next year while staying as true to myself as I
 possibly can.”
