 \, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major 
 milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the sylla
 bus\, students \\"develop the capacity to work independently by identifyin
 g\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves mu
 ltiple iterations.\\" Each student takes their own path\, encountering que
 stions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end
  of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a prese
 ntation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a pan
 el of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architect
 ure Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and des
 ign work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and trans
 fer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to expl
 ore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show featu
 res 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every 
 Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \n\nThe works in this year’s
  exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students invest
 igate memory\, identity\, materiality\, ecology\, technology\, labor\, soc
 ial relationships\, and the built environment through equally diverse form
 al approaches. While these subjects recur across the exhibition\, what sta
 nds out most is not a dominant thematic direction\, but a shared commitmen

 nd. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcome
 d forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, a
 nd the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for 
 a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project sup
 ported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees t
 o show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and 
 the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native langua
 ges tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an aw
 ard-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland
 . A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *T
 he Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel
 * and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-te
 rm personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and 
 loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine a
 nd Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale inv
 asion\, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “T

DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage desi
 gner\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within
  the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Len
 ingrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realis
 t and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Real
 ism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known a
 rtistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. F
 or political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformis
 t work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnes
 sed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersk
 y reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with h
 ope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalize
 d people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial work
 ers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their
  circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\
 , and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more
  than anything else. Art was an expression of freedom\, individuality\, an

DESCRIPTION:The Institute for the Humanities’ presentation of Cosmo Whyt
 e’s* Ballad for Rodney* (2024) is organized as part of Whyte’s upcomin
 g solo exhibition at the Stamps Gallery entitled *Cosmo Whyte: Under the Q
 uiet\, Beyond the Eye*.\n\nThis “curtain painting” operates simultaneo
 usly as painting and sculpture\, inviting the viewer to physically engage 
 with the surface\, passing through to another layer underneath. \n\nAbout 
 the artist\nCosmo Whyte (b. 1982\, St. Andrew\, Jamaica) is an interdiscip
 linary artist who employs drawing\, installation\, and sculpture to create
  conceptual work exploring interstitial subjectivity through an engagement
  with both intimate and public archives\, as well as Black spatiality and 
 forms of resistance. He received his MFA from the University of Michigan. 
 In 2022\, he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an ass
 istant professor.\n\n\nWhyte’s work has been exhibited nationally and in
 ternationally\, including at MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Conte
 mporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; The High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\; The D
 rawing Center\, New York\, NY\; Atlanta Contemporary\, Atlanta\, GA\; Cent
 re Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\; and the National Gallery of Jamaica
 \, Kingston\, Jamaica\, among others. His work is in public museum collect

 ogswell’s Hands on Fire is a solo exhibition of mixed media drawings at 
 the Residential College Gallery at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor
 . The exhibition features sixty works on paper completed between 2024 and 
 2026.\n\nThis body of work responds to Greek Cypriot filmmaker Michael Cac
 oyannis’ cinematic adaptations of three tragedies by Euripides dealing w
 ith the Trojan War and its aftermath: Electra (1962)\, The Trojan Women (1
 971)\, and Iphigenia (1977). The work is in close conversation with Vinyl 
 Euripides (2022)\, Cogswell’s adhesive vinyl installation on three floor
 s of the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in Athens\, Greece\, which also res
 ponded to the cinematic trilogy. By following Cacoyannis’ adaptations\, 
 Cogswell builds on a cross-cultural history of restaging these tragedies t
 o examine the human suffering caused by war\, imperial overreach\, and abu
 se of power\; and the dehumanizing consequences of revenge as a course of 
 justice.\n\nWithin each drawing multiple scenes from the three narratives 
 are overlaid within single frames\, suggesting the unseen entanglements th
 at bind these ancient stories into such a persistent vision of our human p
 osition.\n\nThe grid of paintings encircling the gallery proposes a linear
  narrative but delivers instead a sequence that loops and turns on itself\
 , a stuck frame that stutters until bursting in flames. The grid also evok
 es the net that is a central feature of the series--the web of fate and ci
 rcumstance that governs each of our lives\, that determines who we are and
  what is possible for us at any given moment in history.\n\nThe drawings a
 re also characterized by a repeated motif of hands as consuming flames. Ha
 nds have unlimited expressive and narrative potential. They testify to the
  centrality of making in the development of human cognition. They are remi
 nders of the constructed world and the laborers responsible for bringing i
 t into being. We use hands as a form of communication to shape and express
  our inner states. Hands teach us to feel and to reason\, to count and to 
 indicate. They give us agency\, as creators but also as destroyers. They g
 ive form to our willingness to act in the world\, in greed or compassion.\

 partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Southeast Michigan-based
 \, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, dire
 cted by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA
  ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed b
 y Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artist
 s annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experim
 ental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and 
 Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street 
 that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to cre
 ate new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 -

 n\nAbhishek Narula\, Compressions \nCompressions is an installation compri
 sed of 416 industrial-grade zip ties\, cinched around the entry pillar of 
 the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumferenc
 e\, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it\, resulting in 208 rows. 
 The humble zip tie\, typically used to hang and bind other material\, is r
 elegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and eas
 ily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation\, instead serves as an obj
 ect of aesthetic possibility\, pulling it out of its usual background role
  to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwe
 ll\, to slow down\, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an
  artist\, designer\, and educator who works across sculpture\, installatio
 n\, sound\, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions\, work
 ing with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and si
 tes in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within
  the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural sy
 stems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience 
 itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry\, exploring themes of labor\,
  precarity\, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio 
 Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his 
 MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. 
 His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as t

 nEqually To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the
  courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculptu
 re made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recolog
 y San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage
  container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon e
 ntry. For Byrne\, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at 
 the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to t
 he artist’s interest in embodied experience of space\, archival and site
  responsiveness\, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. 
 Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis ex
 hibition Equally Empty\, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equall
 y To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both ti
 tles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator curren
 tly based in Detroit\, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects
 \, he reimagines\, and explores within frameworks such as language\, the p
 assage of time\, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveyin
 g phenomenal\, transformative\, and emotive states through materiality\, p
 rocess\, and placement\, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s en
 counters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the
  University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio A
 rt and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lect
 urer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is 
 exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at

  2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary ar
 tist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from 
 Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He i
 s currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, 
 UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate
  Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as 
 a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, re
 fusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static o
 r neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encou
 nter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across ge
 nerations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, b
 etween what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between insti
 tutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to co
 nsider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities 
 that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-eco
 nomic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border poli
 tics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a

 premodern Korean cultural and economic histories. He has published widely 
 on Japanese Zen\, Zen master Hakuin Ekaku\, traditional medicine in Japan\
 , Korean Buddhism and Sŏn monasticism\, and Korean film. Major publicatio
 ns include *Buddhas and Ancestors: Religion and Wealth in Fourteenth-Centu
 ry Korea* (2018)\, *Transgression in Korea* (2018)\, and translations like
  *The Orthodox Path of Seon* (2023) and *Gongan Collections I* (2012). He 
 is currently co-editing a volume on Koryŏ and contributing to the Cambrid
 ge Histories Series\, and is the recipient of awards including the Puri Aw
 ard\, Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship\, and Kyujanggak Fellowship.\n\nJi Yeon 
 Hong / University of Michigan\nJi Yeon Hong is an associate professor of p
 olitical science and the Korea Foundation Chair Professor of Korean Politi
 cs at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on authoritarian po
 litics\, democratization\, political violence\, and elite behavior under d
 ictatorship in East Asia. Her scholarship has been widely published in lea
 ding field publications\, including *the American Journal of Political Sci
 ence*\, *British Journal of Political Science*\, and *Journal of Politics*
 . \n\nHer academic path is deeply rooted in the historic political movemen
 ts she witnessed firsthand. Raised in Seoul\, South Korea\, her experience
  observing the country's democratization during the 1980s and 1990s inspir
 ed her to pursue political science. After earning her Bachelor’s and Mas
 ter’s degrees from Seoul National University and her Ph.D. from New York
  University\, she served on the faculty at the Hong Kong University of Sci
 ence and Technology (HKUST) from 2014 to 2022\, where she observed another
  defining wave of pro-democracy activism before joining U-M.\n\nDavid Doli
 nger / Former Peace Corps Volunteer\nDavid L. Dolinger is a scientist and 
 global health professional currently working in India. He has played key r
 oles in the development and commercialization of diagnostic solutions with
  a focus on their practical implementation and use in low- and middle-inco
 me countries. His work sits at the intersection of laboratory science\, re
 gulatory rigor\, and a long-standing commitment to social justice and pati
 ent-centered care. Over the years he has also taken on advisory and collab
 orative roles with diagnostic manufacturers and global health partners foc
 used on expanding access to high-quality testing in low- and middle-income
  countries. \n\nHowever\, this passion and drive would not have fermented 
 to the level if it had not been for his life-forming experiences as a Peac
 e corps volunteer in the Republic of Korea. At the young age of 22\, he tr
 avelled for the first time outside of the United States\, landing in south
  Jeolla province in the small county of Yeongam. He worked in the local he
 alth center focusing on tuberculosis control. It was there that he started
  to understand how diagnostic tests are the foundation of good health care
 . It was his experiences in and participation in the May 18 Democratizatio
 n Movement\, in Gwangju that grounded him and has driven him through his l
 ife to utilize his talents and understanding of diagnostics to focus on th
 ose that are marginalized and ignored.\n\nNa Kyung-taek / Former Photojour
 nalist\nNa Kyung-taek\, former head of the Yonhap News Bureau for Gwangju 
 and Jeonnam\, began his career in journalism in 1967. As a pioneering phot
 ojournalist\, he captured the frontlines of the May 18 Democratization Mov
 ement\, exposing the truth to the world through his lens. His unwavering j
 ournalistic integrity earned him both the Courageous Journalist Award and 
 the Korea Journalist Award.\n\nFollowing his retirement\, Mr. Na continued
  to serve the public through university lectures and welfare foundation wo
 rk. He has remained dedicated to sharing the historical significance of Ma
 y 18 globally\, authoring books such as *When That Day in May Comes Again 
 and We Saw*\, and hosting photo exhibitions across South Korea and interna
 tionally\, including in Germany and the United States.\n\nSohl Lee / Stony
  Brook University\nSohl Lee is associate professor of art history at Stony
  Brook University (SUNY)\, specializing in modern and contemporary Asian a
 rt\, decolonial visual culture\, socially engaged art\, and ecological art
  history\, with a particular interest in oceanic and transpacific framewor
 ks. Her first book\, *The Minjung Art Movement: Decolonization and Democra
 cy in South Korea* (Duke University Press\, 2026)\, historicizes an influe
 ntial movement of activist art from the 1970s and 1980s. Her current book 
 project\, *Seaweed as Method: Art History with Oceans\, Multispecies Life\
 , and Empire* examines the global visual cultures of seaweeds through the 
 intertwined lenses of ecology\, decolonization\, food sovereignty\, and In
 digenous onto-epistemologies. She is a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’
 s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2020) and has received grants and fell
 owships from the Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC)\, the Korea Found
 ation\, the Korean Ministry of Culture\, the Academy of Korean Studies\, t
 he Getty Research Institute\, and the Andy Warhol Foundation\, among other
 s.\n\nHayana Kim / Ohio State University\nHayana Kim is an assistant profe
 ssor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the Ohio
  State University. As an interdisciplinary performance and media historian
  of twentieth- and twenty-first-century South Korea\, her research centers
  on cultures of democracy in contemporary South Korea. Her teaching is at 
 the intersections of Korean studies\, Asian diasporic studies\, and theatr
 e\, performance\, and media studies. Kim is currently working on her book 
 manuscript entitled *Making P’an for a New World: The Kwangju Uprising\,
  Women\, and the Performativity of South Korean Democracy*. This project\,
  based on extensive archival and ethnographic research\, investigates the 
 role of the body and affect in advancing democracy in South Korea by illum
 inating various forms of performances that women in Kwangju and in broader
  Chŏlla Province created to bring out insurgent cultural spaces where dea
 ths disavowed by the state and concealed from the public eye emerge into c
 ommunal memories. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in *Journal of A
 sian Studies*\, *Asian Theatre Journal*\, and in edited collections publis

 hers. She received her Ph.D. from the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in T

 é Gustave Eiffel\nThierry Bonzon\, associate professor (Maître de confé
 rences) in contemporary history at Université Gustave Eiffel\, conducts r
 esearch at the intersection of First World War history and the historical 
 analysis of photography as a primary source. His first line of inquiry exa
 mines the local dynamics of wartime sacrifice\, social policy\, and pacifi
 st movements—notably explored through the \\"La France pétitionne\\" pr
 oject and the co-organization of the international conference Les défense
 urs de la paix\, 1899–1917\, which integrated Peace Studies into French 
 historiography. His second field explores photojournalism and image-based 
 history through two distinct geographical and temporal contexts: a collect
 ive project analyzing over 2\,000 photographer-correspondents for l'Humani
 té documenting social and urban changes in the Paris region (1950s–1990
 s)\, and a current investigation into the photographic archives of the May

 ts in American art history – the Harlem Renaissance. Three scholars will
  reflect on the period’s rich legacy in the fields of visual art\, music
 \, and theatre. Moderated by Bianca Washington\, the panel will include Dr
 . Amy Mooney (Professor of Art History at Columbia College Chicago)\, Rev.
  Millard Southern (PhD candidate in Interdisciplinary Studies at WMU)\, an
 d Dr. Quincy Thomas (Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts at Kalamazoo Coll
 ege). \n\nRegister \n\nDr. Amy Mooney\, Panelist on Visual Art\n			Dr. Amy
  M. Mooney is a Professor of Art History at Columbia College Chicago. Her 
 publications include a monograph\, Archibald J. Motley\, Jr.\, as well as 
 contributions to anthologies and catalogs including Alma Thomas: Everythin
 g is Beautiful\, Beyond Face: New Perspectives in Portraiture\, Archibald 
 Motley: Jazz Age Modernist\, Black Is Black Ain’t\, and Romare Bearden i
 n the Modernist Tradition. She is a recipient of fellowships from the Amer
 ican Council of Learned Societies\, the National Portrait Gallery\, the Sm
 ithsonian American Art Museum\, and the Terra Foundation for American Art.
  In collaboration with Dr. Deborah Willis\, she launched a digital humanit
 ies project\, “Say It with Pictures” Then and Now that recovers and ex
 amines Chicago’s African American studio photographers from the 1890s in
 to the 1930s. This project will be the basis for an exhibition at the Newb
 erry Library in 2027 where she will work with contemporary artists to crea
 te a new body of work in response to these important histories. While serv
 ing as the 2019-2020 Terra Foundation Visiting Professor of American Art a
 t Oxford University\, she delivered Regarding the Portrait\, a four-part l
 ecture series that draws from her forthcoming book\, Progressive Visions: 
 Portraiture in the United States\, 1890-1950\, which investigates the soci
 al function of portraiture. Dr. Mooney earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in Art Hi
 story at Rutgers University.\n		Show Panelist Bio\n\nRev. Millard Southern
 \, Panelist on Music\n\n			Rev. Millard Southern III is a third-generation
  minister\, currently serving as the pastor of the historic Allen Chapel A
 .M.E. Church in Kalamazoo. A native of Chicago\, he received a BA in Econo
 mics from Drake University and a Master of Divinity from Union Theological
  Seminary in New York. Rev. Southern is an avid scholar of jazz music and 
 a trumpet player himself. He is now finishing his Ph.D. in Interdisciplina
 ry Studies at Western Michigan University\, using the music of Wynton Mars
 alis to investigate the relationship between jazz\, theology\, and democra
 cy. Rev. Southern regularly creates programming opportunities that bring m
 usic to youth and adult audiences in Kalamazoo. Recent highlights have inc
 luded a 2025 Trumpet Summit at WMU and a concert by Wynton Marsalis in 202
 6\, which was followed by a public one-on-one conversation on jazz and Ame
 rican culture. He has also collaborated with the KIA’s education departm
 ent on multiple programs\, bringing music and visual art into conversation
  with one another.\n		Show Panelist Bio\n\nDr. Quincy Thomas\, Panelist on
  Theatre\n\n			Dr. Quincy Thomas earned a Ph.D. in Theatre and a Performan
 ce Studies certification from Bowling Green State University. As an actor\
 , director\, intimacy coordinator\, and playwright\, their offerings focus
  on subjects such as counter-storytelling\; Black performativity in Americ
 an media\; representations of the marginalized in popular culture\; stand-
 up and solo performance\; and performative writing. Dr. Thomas is an Assis
 tant Professor of Theatre Arts at Kalamazoo College\, where they also serv
 e as department co-chair. They apply their passion for theatre\, performan
 ce studies\, and film while speaking to issues surrounding cultural margin
 alization and misrepresentation in the arts\, specifically of racial and e
 thnic minorities\, women\, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Their most
  recent directorial offerings have included: Harlem Duet (Kalamazoo Festiv
 al Playhouse and Face Off Theatre)\, Love’s Labour’s Lost (Kalamazoo F
 estival Playhouse)\, California Suite (Kalamazoo Civic Theatre)\, A New Le
 af (Queer Theatre Kalamazoo)\, and Chicken and Biscuits (Farmer’s Alley 
 Theatre). They have most recently appeared onstage as Lopakhin in The Cher

 ianca Washington\, Panel Moderator\n\n			Bianca Washington received her BA
  at Western Michigan University and her MFA in Acting and Theatre Educatio
 n at The Pennsylvania State University. She studied abroad in London\, Sou

 search. After her training\, she ventured to New York City to gain a fulle
 r understanding of the industry\, serving as an understudy at the Pearl Th
 eatre Company and as a volunteer at the 52nd Street Project. Upon her retu
 rn to Michigan\, she began adjunct teaching at Western Michigan University
 \, Lake Michigan College\, and Kalamazoo College. Washington has been teac
 hing at the collegiate level for seven years and has educated young people

 \, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major 
 milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the sylla
 bus\, students \\"develop the capacity to work independently by identifyin
 g\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves mu
 ltiple iterations.\\" Each student takes their own path\, encountering que
 stions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end
  of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a prese
 ntation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a pan
 el of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architect
 ure Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and des
 ign work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and trans
 fer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to expl
 ore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show featu
 res 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every 
 Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \n\nThe works in this year’s
  exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students invest
 igate memory\, identity\, materiality\, ecology\, technology\, labor\, soc
 ial relationships\, and the built environment through equally diverse form
 al approaches. While these subjects recur across the exhibition\, what sta
 nds out most is not a dominant thematic direction\, but a shared commitmen

DESCRIPTION:MICHIGAN TECH ART SERIES EVENT\n\nNeoliberal Loops is a body o
 f work created by Emma C. Johnson that explores neoliberalism\, postfemini
 sm\, economic precarity\, and how our understanding of these phenomena are
  mediated through visual culture. Her work is concerned with mundane and i
 diosyncratic details that are telling of a larger picture of the world. Sh
 e works primarily in painting\, printmaking\, photography\, video\, sound\
 , and text. Whatever medium the idea demands is what determines the materi
 ality of the finished work. \n\nThe Neoliberal Loops project features thre
 e related works on the theme of financial crisis. This includes music/soun
 d and digital video\, photography\, text on a moving LED lights screen\, a
 nd letterpress on paper. This exhibition is an opportunity to reflect on c
 apitalism\, representation\, and feminism\, and grapple with this material
  in a visceral way. Emma invites viewers to reflect on neoliberalism\, whi
 ch often seems as natural as the air we breathe. This opens up a dialog ab
 out how representations of neoliberalism shapes our understanding of it an
 d how we might approach our understanding of it and other possibilities fo
 r living differently. This project brings Emma's writing\, art\, music\, a
 nd theoretical background together when these areas are typically compartm
 entalized.\n\nThis exhibition was also an opportunity for Emma to receive 
 guidance from Michigan Technological University’s Math and Music Lab (MM
 L) co-directors Robert Schnieder and Michael Maxwell. Combining math\, vis
 ual and performing arts\, and the humanities opens up possibilities. Emma'
 s time at MTU was a unique opportunity to combine disciplines to culminate

 nd. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcome
 d forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, a
 nd the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for 
 a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project sup
 ported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees t
 o show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and 
 the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native langua
 ges tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an aw
 ard-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland
 . A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *T
 he Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel
 * and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-te
 rm personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and 
 loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine a

DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage desi
 gner\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within
  the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Len
 ingrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realis
 t and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Real
 ism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known a
 rtistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. F
 or political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformis
 t work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnes
 sed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersk
 y reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with h
 ope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalize
 d people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial work
 ers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their
  circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\
 , and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more
  than anything else. Art was an expression of freedom\, individuality\, an
 d personalized creativity\, without which it ceased to be art.”\n— Gal

 ogswell’s Hands on Fire is a solo exhibition of mixed media drawings at 
 the Residential College Gallery at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor
 . The exhibition features sixty works on paper completed between 2024 and 
 2026.\n\nThis body of work responds to Greek Cypriot filmmaker Michael Cac
 oyannis’ cinematic adaptations of three tragedies by Euripides dealing w
 ith the Trojan War and its aftermath: Electra (1962)\, The Trojan Women (1
 971)\, and Iphigenia (1977). The work is in close conversation with Vinyl 
 Euripides (2022)\, Cogswell’s adhesive vinyl installation on three floor
 s of the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in Athens\, Greece\, which also res
 ponded to the cinematic trilogy. By following Cacoyannis’ adaptations\, 
 Cogswell builds on a cross-cultural history of restaging these tragedies t
 o examine the human suffering caused by war\, imperial overreach\, and abu
 se of power\; and the dehumanizing consequences of revenge as a course of 
 justice.\n\nWithin each drawing multiple scenes from the three narratives 
 are overlaid within single frames\, suggesting the unseen entanglements th
 at bind these ancient stories into such a persistent vision of our human p
 osition.\n\nThe grid of paintings encircling the gallery proposes a linear
  narrative but delivers instead a sequence that loops and turns on itself\
 , a stuck frame that stutters until bursting in flames. The grid also evok
 es the net that is a central feature of the series--the web of fate and ci
 rcumstance that governs each of our lives\, that determines who we are and
  what is possible for us at any given moment in history.\n\nThe drawings a
 re also characterized by a repeated motif of hands as consuming flames. Ha
 nds have unlimited expressive and narrative potential. They testify to the
  centrality of making in the development of human cognition. They are remi
 nders of the constructed world and the laborers responsible for bringing i
 t into being. We use hands as a form of communication to shape and express
  our inner states. Hands teach us to feel and to reason\, to count and to 
 indicate. They give us agency\, as creators but also as destroyers. They g
 ive form to our willingness to act in the world\, in greed or compassion.\

DESCRIPTION:The Institute for the Humanities’ presentation of Cosmo Whyt
 e’s* Ballad for Rodney* (2024) is organized as part of Whyte’s upcomin
 g solo exhibition at the Stamps Gallery entitled *Cosmo Whyte: Under the Q
 uiet\, Beyond the Eye*.\n\nThis “curtain painting” operates simultaneo
 usly as painting and sculpture\, inviting the viewer to physically engage 
 with the surface\, passing through to another layer underneath. \n\nAbout 
 the artist\nCosmo Whyte (b. 1982\, St. Andrew\, Jamaica) is an interdiscip
 linary artist who employs drawing\, installation\, and sculpture to create
  conceptual work exploring interstitial subjectivity through an engagement
  with both intimate and public archives\, as well as Black spatiality and 
 forms of resistance. He received his MFA from the University of Michigan. 
 In 2022\, he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an ass
 istant professor.\n\n\nWhyte’s work has been exhibited nationally and in
 ternationally\, including at MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Conte
 mporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; The High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\; The D
 rawing Center\, New York\, NY\; Atlanta Contemporary\, Atlanta\, GA\; Cent
 re Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\; and the National Gallery of Jamaica
 \, Kingston\, Jamaica\, among others. His work is in public museum collect
 ions including the High Museum\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art

DESCRIPTION:From September 2025 through December 2026\, Stamps Gallery is 
 partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Southeast Michigan-based
 \, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, dire
 cted by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA
  ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed b
 y Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artist
 s annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experim
 ental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and 
 Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street 
 that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to cre
 ate new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 -
  December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna
  (MFA ’20)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA

 n\nAbhishek Narula\, Compressions \nCompressions is an installation compri
 sed of 416 industrial-grade zip ties\, cinched around the entry pillar of 
 the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumferenc
 e\, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it\, resulting in 208 rows. 
 The humble zip tie\, typically used to hang and bind other material\, is r
 elegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and eas
 ily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation\, instead serves as an obj
 ect of aesthetic possibility\, pulling it out of its usual background role
  to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwe
 ll\, to slow down\, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an
  artist\, designer\, and educator who works across sculpture\, installatio
 n\, sound\, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions\, work
 ing with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and si
 tes in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within
  the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural sy
 stems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience 
 itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry\, exploring themes of labor\,
  precarity\, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio 
 Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his 
 MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. 
 His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as t
 he Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology\, Science Gallery Detroit\, Spe
 culum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia\, New Media Caucus (NMC)\, WaveFar
 m\, The Boulder Public Library\, The Hyde Park Art Center\, Sector 2337 Ar
 t Gallery & Printing Press\, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI)\, Interna
 tional Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA)\, among others. He is a Robotic
 s Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the Universi
 ty of Michigan. Website / Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne\, Equally To Be Loved\
 nEqually To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the
  courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculptu
 re made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recolog
 y San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage
  container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon e
 ntry. For Byrne\, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at 
 the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to t
 he artist’s interest in embodied experience of space\, archival and site
  responsiveness\, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. 
 Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis ex
 hibition Equally Empty\, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equall
 y To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both ti
 tles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator curren
 tly based in Detroit\, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects
 \, he reimagines\, and explores within frameworks such as language\, the p
 assage of time\, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveyin
 g phenomenal\, transformative\, and emotive states through materiality\, p
 rocess\, and placement\, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s en
 counters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the
  University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio A
 rt and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lect
 urer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is 
 exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at
  Vermont Studio Center. He has been awarded numerous artist residencies in
 cluding Anderson Ranch Arts Center\, I-Park\, KHN Center for the Arts\, Pr

  2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary ar
 tist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from 
 Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He i
 s currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, 
 UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate
  Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as 
 a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, re
 fusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static o
 r neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encou
 nter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across ge
 nerations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, b
 etween what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between insti
 tutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to co
 nsider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities 
 that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-eco
 nomic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border poli
 tics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a 
 timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with

 on Description*\nThis photo exhibition features 90 curated images from the
  UNESCO-inscribed May 18 Archives. Documenting the May 18–27\, 1980 demo
 cratization uprising in Gwangju\, South Korea\, the collection captures th
 e shift from peaceful student protests to military violence and unified ci
 tizen resistance\, carried out under a complete blackout as civilians and 
 photojournalists risked their lives to photograph atrocities and smuggle f
 ilm past cordons. Beyond serving as historical artifacts\, these preserved
  visual truths offer a living blueprint for popular resilience against aut
 horitarianism\, transforming local trauma into a universal defense of huma
 n rights. Displaying these records at Michigan bridges 1980 Gwangju with o
 ur present moment\, inviting viewers to engage past resistance in the ongo
 ing effort to defend democracy today.\n\n*Exhibition Composition*\nThe exh
 ibit will be composed of a visual narrative comprised of six chronological
  sections and two additional special sections:\n\n1. Protest (May 5–16\,
  1980): \nFollowing the collapse of Park Chung-hee’s military dictatorsh
 ip in October\, 1979\, Gwangju students and citizens held peaceful rallies
  for campus autonomy and the end of martial law. Photos from this era show
  orderly marches and hopeful faces\, capturing a society on the brink of c
 hange before the structural contradictions shifted toward state-led violen
 ce. \n\n2. Suppression (May 18–19\, 1980): \nA new junta government led 
 by Chun Doo-hwan extended martial law to the entire country on May 17. Stu
 dents at Chonnam National University protested against the new junta gover
 nment’s decision. State violence escalated as paratroopers\, who were de
 ployed to Gwangju\, engaged student protesters. Streets became scenes of b
 rutal beatings and kidnappings. Beyond documenting victims\, the images on
  display in this section serve as primary historical evidence and legal pr
 oof of the military's methods and the sudden transformation of citizens in
 to targets of control. \n\n3. Uprising (May 20–21\, 1980): \nThe movemen
 t shifted into a popular struggle. Vehicles lined up in Gwangju’s main t
 horoughfare\, Geumnam-ro. This massive vehicle parade symbolized the peopl
 e becoming active subjects of resistance. The military was given the order
  to use live ammunition against civilians. In reaction\, the city became a
  space of voluntary mobilization and citizens emerged as historical politi
 cal actors. \n\n4. Resistance (May 22–26\, 1980): \nWhile isolated and c
 ut off from communications\, Gwangju established an autonomous system of s
 elf-governance. Photos in this section testify to the efforts made to esta
 blish a sense of order based on solidarity—sharing food and donating blo
 od—rather than chaos. The formation of this \\"Daedong (Great Unity) Com
 munity\\" and the visual documentation thereof serve as foundations of dem
 ocracy in South Korea. \n\n5. Massacre (May 27\, 1980): \nThe uprising was
  crushed by a dawn military operation. While the armed resistance ended\, 
 the resulting photographs of the aftermath reveal the stark reality of the
  massacre. These images became the catalyst for future truth-seeking movem
 ents and the pursuit of historical justice in South Korea. \n\n6. Mourning
 : \nScenes of coffins\, portraits\, and silent vigils represent a collecti
 ve ethical gaze. During this period\, mourning was more than a display of 
 grief\; it was a communal act used to redefine the city’s identity and e
 stablish new moral standards for justice.\n\n7. Special Section A: The Pho
 tographers\nThis special section highlights the domestic and international
  photographers who documented the uprising. This includes Korean journalis
 ts alongside US journalists Robin Moyer and Norman Thorpe\, French corresp
 ondents Patrick Chauvel and François Lochon\, and German cinematographer 
 Jürgen Hinzpeter. Their images transcend simple reporting\, reflecting a 
 moral commitment to record and a historical duty to ensure remembrance. Ra
 ther than viewing these photos solely as evidence\, the exhibition reinter
 prets them through a lens of photographic history—examining their contex
 t\, distribution\, and how they transformed raw records into social truth 
 and collective memory.\n\n8. Special Section B: The Peace Corps: Americans
  Who Helped Gwangju\nWhen Gwangju was isolated under martial law in May 19
 80\, four American Peace Corps volunteers—Tim Warnberg\, David Lee Dolin
 ger\, Judi Chamberlin\, and Paul Courtright—refused to leave\, choosing 
 instead to assist the wounded\, aid foreign journalists\, and ultimately e
 xpose the truth to the world. Those pivotal ten days reshaped their lives 
 into lifelong commitments to human rights\, inspiring decades of memoirs\,
  academic writings\, and testimonies. Through photographs\, video footage\
 , and personal records\, this section traces their journey from eyewitness
 es to active defenders of human dignity\, inviting us to reflect on what i
 t truly means to take a stand in the face of another’s suffering. \n\nTw

DESCRIPTION:MICHIGAN TECH ART SERIES EVENT\n\nNeoliberal Loops is a body o
 f work created by Emma C. Johnson that explores neoliberalism\, postfemini
 sm\, economic precarity\, and how our understanding of these phenomena are
  mediated through visual culture. Her work is concerned with mundane and i
 diosyncratic details that are telling of a larger picture of the world. Sh
 e works primarily in painting\, printmaking\, photography\, video\, sound\
 , and text. Whatever medium the idea demands is what determines the materi
 ality of the finished work. \n\nThe Neoliberal Loops project features thre
 e related works on the theme of financial crisis. This includes music/soun
 d and digital video\, photography\, text on a moving LED lights screen\, a
 nd letterpress on paper. This exhibition is an opportunity to reflect on c
 apitalism\, representation\, and feminism\, and grapple with this material
  in a visceral way. Emma invites viewers to reflect on neoliberalism\, whi
 ch often seems as natural as the air we breathe. This opens up a dialog ab
 out how representations of neoliberalism shapes our understanding of it an
 d how we might approach our understanding of it and other possibilities fo
 r living differently. This project brings Emma's writing\, art\, music\, a
 nd theoretical background together when these areas are typically compartm
 entalized.\n\nThis exhibition was also an opportunity for Emma to receive 
 guidance from Michigan Technological University’s Math and Music Lab (MM
 L) co-directors Robert Schnieder and Michael Maxwell. Combining math\, vis
 ual and performing arts\, and the humanities opens up possibilities. Emma'

DESCRIPTION:MICHIGAN TECH ART SERIES EVENT\n\nNeoliberal Loops is a body o
 f work created by Emma C. Johnson that explores neoliberalism\, postfemini
 sm\, economic precarity\, and how our understanding of these phenomena are
  mediated through visual culture. Her work is concerned with mundane and i
 diosyncratic details that are telling of a larger picture of the world. Sh
 e works primarily in painting\, printmaking\, photography\, video\, sound\
 , and text. Whatever medium the idea demands is what determines the materi
 ality of the finished work. \n\nThe Neoliberal Loops project features thre
 e related works on the theme of financial crisis. This includes music/soun
 d and digital video\, photography\, text on a moving LED lights screen\, a
 nd letterpress on paper. This exhibition is an opportunity to reflect on c
 apitalism\, representation\, and feminism\, and grapple with this material
  in a visceral way. Emma invites viewers to reflect on neoliberalism\, whi
 ch often seems as natural as the air we breathe. This opens up a dialog ab
 out how representations of neoliberalism shapes our understanding of it an
 d how we might approach our understanding of it and other possibilities fo
 r living differently. This project brings Emma's writing\, art\, music\, a
 nd theoretical background together when these areas are typically compartm
 entalized.\n\nThis exhibition was also an opportunity for Emma to receive 
 guidance from Michigan Technological University’s Math and Music Lab (MM
 L) co-directors Robert Schnieder and Michael Maxwell. Combining math\, vis
 ual and performing arts\, and the humanities opens up possibilities. Emma'

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Detroit Month of Design\, join us for an art
 ist talk by Cody Norman (CAA MFA 3D Design '20) followed by a conversation
  with Andrew Satake Blauvelt (CAA MFA Design '88)\, Director of Cranbrook 
 Art Museum.  \n\nCody Norman is a Chicago-based artist\, designer\, and e
 ducator. He currently serves as part-time faculty in the Sculpture and Des
 igned Objects departments at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. 
 Norman works with both digital and analog fabrication processes to transfo
 rm recycled and bio plastics into functional art objects. Creating enigmat
 ic forms that feel at once familiar and foreign\, Norman’s process physi
 cally blurs the line between digital and hand craft.\n\nNorman’s work 
 is represented by I.M. Weiss Gallery and his Trace Chair has recently been
  acquired by the Cranbrook Art Museum where it is currently on view in the
  exhibition Labyrinth/Laboratory: Selections from the Cranbrook Collection

DESCRIPTION:MICHIGAN TECH ART SERIES EVENT\n\nNeoliberal Loops is a body o
 f work created by Emma C. Johnson that explores neoliberalism\, postfemini
 sm\, economic precarity\, and how our understanding of these phenomena are
  mediated through visual culture. Her work is concerned with mundane and i
 diosyncratic details that are telling of a larger picture of the world. Sh
 e works primarily in painting\, printmaking\, photography\, video\, sound\
 , and text. Whatever medium the idea demands is what determines the materi
 ality of the finished work. \n\nThe Neoliberal Loops project features thre
 e related works on the theme of financial crisis. This includes music/soun
 d and digital video\, photography\, text on a moving LED lights screen\, a
 nd letterpress on paper. This exhibition is an opportunity to reflect on c
 apitalism\, representation\, and feminism\, and grapple with this material
  in a visceral way. Emma invites viewers to reflect on neoliberalism\, whi
 ch often seems as natural as the air we breathe. This opens up a dialog ab
 out how representations of neoliberalism shapes our understanding of it an
 d how we might approach our understanding of it and other possibilities fo
 r living differently. This project brings Emma's writing\, art\, music\, a
 nd theoretical background together when these areas are typically compartm

 e to Remixing Design\, Art\, Craft\, and Industry\, a publication by forme
 r Designer-in-Residence of 3D Design\, Scott Klinker (CAA MFA Design 1996)
 . The book is a guide to contemporary studio practice that combines instru
 ctional methods with significant student and alumni projects developed dur
 ing his years at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Scott will be joined in convers
 ation by Director of Cranbrook Art Museum\, Andrew Satake Blauvelt (CAA MF
 A Design 1988)\, Nina Cho (CAA MFA 3D Design 2015)\, and Evan Fay (CAA MFA
  3D Design 2016).\n\nScott Klinker designs furniture\, lighting\, and spat
 ial systems that operate at the intersection of design\, architecture\, ar
 t\, and craft. Trained as an industrial designer\, he approaches each proj
 ect through an architectural lens\, exploring how people inhabit and exper
 ience space. \n\nHe has partnered with design-driven companies\, includin
 g MillerKnoll\, Alessi\, Steelcase\, Landscape Forms\, and Burton Snowboar
 ds. His industry projects have received numerous professional awards\, whi
 le his limited-edition works are represented by Playground Detroit. \n\nK
 linker earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and has held profession
 al positions at IDEO in Palo Alto and Sony Ericsson. Before returning to C
 ranbrook\, he taught design for two years in Japan at the Kanazawa Interna
 tional Design Institute. His studio is based in Metro Detroit\, Michigan.
  \n\nThe book signing will begin at 6pm\, and the conversation will follo
