DESCRIPTION:RCGD Fall 2026 Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture
 & Health\, meets Mondays 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 6050.\n\nGlobal Perspec
tives on Culture and Health explores fundamental aspects of human life. Cu
lture facilitates human interaction by providing meaning to lived experien
ce. Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advanc
es the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human e
xperience. Yet\, culture should be understood as dynamic and complex. It f
undamentally shapes individuals and simultaneously is shaped by individual
 s. The importance of systematically attending to culture includes topics o
 f values\, language\, immigration\, and society.\n\nTheories and methods t
hat incorporate culture hold great potential for advancing the understandi
ng of health outcomes and health trajectories in various global contexts.\
n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on various aspects of culture a
nd diverse groups living in the U.S. and across the globe to address the w
ays in which attending to culture helps clarify and overcome challenges to
good health.\n\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of th
e longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been runni
ng uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in B
erlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty
organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamic
s at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this s
eminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included
political polarization\, evolution and human behavior\, and cultural psych
ology.\n\nIn person: ISR Thompson 6050\, unless otherwise specified.\nOrga
nized by Kristine Ajrouch and Sela Panapasa\nEvents are not recorded.

DESCRIPTION:August 24 - October 18\, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1
 \, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major
milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the sylla
bus\, students \\"develop the capacity to work independently by identifyin
g\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves mu
ltiple iterations.\\" Each student takes their own path\, encountering que
stions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end
of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a prese
ntation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a pan
el of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architect
ure Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and des
ign work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and trans
fer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to expl
ore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show featu
res 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every
Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \n\nThe works in this year’s
exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students invest
 igate memory\, identity\, materiality\, ecology\, technology\, labor\, soc
ial relationships\, and the built environment through equally diverse form
al approaches. While these subjects recur across the exhibition\, what sta

DESCRIPTION:MICHIGAN TECH ART SERIES EVENT\n\nNeoliberal Loops is a body o
f work created by Emma C. Johnson that explores neoliberalism\, postfemini
sm\, economic precarity\, and how our understanding of these phenomena are
mediated through visual culture. Her work is concerned with mundane and i
diosyncratic details that are telling of a larger picture of the world. Sh
 e works primarily in painting\, printmaking\, photography\, video\, sound\
, and text. Whatever medium the idea demands is what determines the materi
ality of the finished work. \n\nThe Neoliberal Loops project features thre
e related works on the theme of financial crisis. This includes music/soun
 d and digital video\, photography\, text on a moving LED lights screen\, a
nd letterpress on paper. This exhibition is an opportunity to reflect on c
apitalism\, representation\, and feminism\, and grapple with this material
in a visceral way. Emma invites viewers to reflect on neoliberalism\, whi
ch often seems as natural as the air we breathe. This opens up a dialog ab
out how representations of neoliberalism shapes our understanding of it an
d how we might approach our understanding of it and other possibilities fo
 r living differently. This project brings Emma's writing\, art\, music\, a
nd theoretical background together when these areas are typically compartm
entalized.\n\nThis exhibition was also an opportunity for Emma to receive
guidance from Michigan Technological University’s Math and Music Lab (MM
 L) co-directors Robert Schnieder and Michael Maxwell. Combining math\, vis
ual and performing arts\, and the humanities opens up possibilities. Emma'
s time at MTU was a unique opportunity to combine disciplines to culminate
in an interdisciplinary project.\n\nThings to know\n\nEXHIBIT DATES | Sep

DESCRIPTION:Environmental Engineering Graduate Seminar\n\nShiqiang (Nick)
Zou\, Assistant Professor\, Civil and Environmental Engineering\, Michigan
State University\n\nSeminar Abstract:\n\nAs the demand for clean water\,
sustainable resource management\, and resilient infrastructure grows\, env
ironmental engineering must move beyond traditional\, energy-intensive tre
atment methods. Electrified engineered systems\, leveraging electrochemica
l redox processes\, offer innovative pathways for pollutant removal\, reso
urce recovery\, and infrastructure resilience while reducing waste and ene
rgy consumption. This seminar will explore three electrochemical technolog
ies that support environmental sustainability and a circular economy. Firs
t\, an electrochemical process for selenium removal and recovery will be d
iscussed\, showcasing its potential to mitigate aquatic selenium pollution
in industrial wastewater from power plants\, agriculture\, and mining. Ne
xt\, a heavy metal extraction system using electrografted carbon cathodes
will demonstrate how electrochemical methods can selectively capture valua
ble metals from complex brine waste streams. Finally\, a novel electrokine
tic soil conditioning technique will be introduced\, demonstrating how ele
ctrochemically activated nanoparticles can improve soil stability in geote
chnical applications without the need for disruptive excavation. By integr
ating electrochemical strategies into environmental engineering\, these ad
vancements provide scalable\, sustainable strategies to pressing challenge
 s in water treatment\, resource recovery\, and infrastructure resilience.\
n\nBio:\n\nDr. Shiqiang (Nick) Zou is an Assistant Professor of Civil and
Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University\, where he leads th
e Electrified WAstewater Treatment and Elemental Recovery (E-WATER) Lab. H
is research integrates applied electrochemistry\, selective separation\, a
nd process engineering to transform water and wastewater treatment from re
source-intensive processes into platforms for resource recovery. His group
works on selective recovery of critical elements and nutrients\, treatmen
t of emerging contaminants\, and electrochemical processes for challenging
industrial and agricultural waste streams\, with an emphasis on understan
ding fundamental mechanisms and addressing barriers to scale-up. Dr. Zou r
eceived his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech and completed postdoc training at Sta
nford University before beginning his faculty career at Auburn University
and joining MSU in 2025. He is an Associate Editor of Desalination and Wat
er Treatment and was selected as a 2025 Early-Career Research Fellow by th
e National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine.

ses made online or by phone.  This means the price you see includes the t
icket price plus MUTO’s ticket processing fee. Tickets may be purchased
with no included fees in person at The Ark during box office hours. \nEsta
blished in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley\, Palmyra captures the collectiv
e spirit of three Virginia natives: Teddy Chipouras\, Mānoa Bell\, and Sa
sha Landon.  \nPalmyra straddles at least two musical worlds. They are\,
on one hand\, a band from the South that plays traditional instruments and
indeed once lived in the old-time locus of Floyd\, Virginia. Comparisons
to and a kinship with The Avett Brothers and even Old Crow Medicine Show a
re inevitable. On the other hand\, Palmyra writes about grief\, gender dys
phoria and identity\, and coming of age in songs that flirt with soul\, po
st-rock\, and even emo\; the South\, too\, is the place of My Morning Jack
 et\, Band of Horses\, Cat Power\, and now\, Palmyra.  \nThe band’s firs
t full length LP\, Restless\, is out now on Oh Boy Records. Framed by mome
nts of struggle\, solidarity\, and hard-won growth\, Restless is an unqual
ified ringer for anyone who loves the space where the roar of indie rock c
 ollides with raw folk.
