DESCRIPTION:Nicole E. Trujillo-Pagán discusses her new book\, Detroit Nev

emed to experience an explosive rebirth following its bankruptcy\, the lar
gest in US municipal history. It was as if the slate had been wiped clean
and the color line erased in the nation’s largest Black city. Detroit Ne
ver Left tackles important contradictions in the post-bankruptcy era. Urba
n youth do not want to be moved out or isolated in their barrio. Similarl
y\, many Detroiters feel spatial changes happen “to” instead of “for
” them. Detroit Never Left presents dispatches from the frontlines of pr
ivatization’s war on the people of Detroit. Dr. Trujillo-Pagán shows ho

s: After receiving a doctorate in American Civilization from the Universit
y of Pennsylvania I took a job as a curator of power and shop machinery at
The Henry Ford in Dearborn\, MI\, Then I moved to Washington\, D.C. to se
rve as an historian of engineering with the Historic American Engineering
Record (HAER)\, a part of the National Park Service. While at HAER I ran a
project to document the history of the Quincy Mining Company in Upper Mic
higan. I found the history of Michigan copper to be so interesting\, and
so rich in archival records\, that in 1981 I took a faculty position at Mi
chigan Technological University in nearby Houghton. I taught there from 19
81 to 2012. Before retiring and becoming an Emeritus Professor of History
 \, I wrote four books about the Copper Country’s mines\, technologies\,
communities and people. But I had not published any books about the autom
obile\, even though I taught a class at Michigan Tech\, “The Automobile
in America\,” for thirty years that enrolled 3\,000 to 4\,000 students.\
n\nThat had to change. Nearing retirement\, I set a goal to finally write
my “car book.” \n\nIt would be a cultural history\, covering the Fifti
es and the Sixties\, that would lay out the auto’s impact on the nation.
At the same time\, it would be a highly personal memoir. It would be an
“auto biography\,” recounting my life growing up with cars. Taking tri
ps to relatives in Indiana and Illinois. Listening to "Maybellene” and
“GTO” on the car radio. Taking your first love out to neck in remote
locations. Cruising Vermilion Street in Danville\, Illinois. Driving a mus
cle car and drag racing Chevelle Super Sports and Oldsmobile 442s. Rolling
a car over\, wheels to wheels. Driving the Prom Queen and her court aroun
d the track at Danville High’s football stadium.\n\n That book is finall
y done and has been published by Wayne State University Press. I think yo
u will be edified and entertained by MOTOR CITY BOOMER: THE CAR CULTURE TH
AT DEFINED A GENERATION. Expect to learn a lot\, laugh a lot\, and cry th
 ree or four times.

ters\n\nAn ambitious young woman insinuates herself into a tight-knit soci
al set\, shaking up friendships and marriages in a small seaside town. A f
rothy novel of love\, money\, sex\, and friendship\, from the New York Tim
es bestselling author of Pineapple Street\n\nWhen Caroline Lash arrives in
  Greenhead\, Massachusetts\, she falls head-over-heels for Van Whittaker\,
  a fleece-wearing\, litter-collecting kayak enthusiast with long\, floppy
hair and the personality of a Border collie. Born and raised in this pictu

 a flame\; Augusta\, old money\, horsey\, and snobbish\; and Fran\, surroun

bars of Greenhead\, drinking on houseboats\, spending long afternoons sun
bathing with their children\, and playing games the way they always have.
But when Bailey discovers that she is pregnant with Van’s baby\, the del

cast out of the circle and what she does next—in a potent mix of fury an
d heartbreak—exposes long-held secrets and works the entire town of Gree

tute\, The Shampoo Effect is a story of late-night parties\, early morning
s with small children\, the dawn of midlife\, and a group of old friends f
inally growing up despite all their best efforts to the contrary.
