DESCRIPTION:I study the effects of innovation policies in product-line mar
 kets\, using a dynamic oligopoly model with endogenous pricing\, product-l
 ine adjustment\, and R&D. I apply the model to the desktop GPU market\, a 
 duopoly between NVIDIA and AMD. I find that a dollar of R&D generates abou
 t $9.0 of within-market surplus net of that dollar\, with the firms captur
 ing $3.0 and consumers the rest. But the return to public support is far m
 ore modest. I simulate three stylized interventions: an R&D credit and two
  product rebates\, one at the cutting edge and one on the mass market. Onl
 y the R&D credit induces a material increase in private R&D\, but it retur
 ns only $0.51 of surplus per public dollar because additionality is low: m
 ost of its outlay reimburses research the firms would have conducted anywa
 y. The rebate on cutting-edge products returns only $0.23 per public dolla
 r and sets back the technology frontier. Subsidizing both firms\, it ignit
 es a price war at the top of the line\, benefiting consumers but undercutt
 ing the reason firms advance the frontier. The mass-market rebate sets off
  the same war lower down the product line but expands adoption enough that
  R&D survives\, returning $1.09 per public dollar. These results suggest t
 hat innovation policy in product-line markets is a more intricate design p
 roblem than in markets with simpler structure. Each instrument induces a d
 istinct equilibrium response in prices\, qualities\, and R&D. The static a
 nd dynamic components of that response can offset or reinforce each other\
 , attenuating or even reversing the intended effect.

DESCRIPTION:Transformers have achieved state-of-the-art performance across
  various tasks\, but suffer from a notable quadratic complexity in sequenc
 e length due to the attention mechanism. In this talk\, I will share our w
 ork on MonarchAttention – a novel approach to sub-quadratic attention ap
 proximation via Monarch matrices\, an expressive class of structured matri
 ces. \nBased on the variational form of softmax\, we describe an efficient
  optimization-based algorithm to compute an approximate projection of soft
 max attention onto the class of Monarch matrices with Θ(N √N d) computa
 tional complexity and Θ(N d) memory and IO complexity. We show with exper
 iments that unlike previous approaches\, MonarchAttention is both (1) tran
 sferable\, yielding minimal performance loss with no additional training\,
  even when replacing every attention layer of the transformer\, and (2) ha
 rdware-efficient\, utilizing the highest-throughput tensor core units on m
 odern GPUs. With optimized kernels\, MonarchAttention achieves substantial
  speed-ups in wall clock time over FlashAttention-2: 1.4× for shorter seq
 uences (N = 256) and 8.2× for longer sequences (N = 16K). \nWe demonstrat
 e the quality of MonarchAttention on diverse tasks and architectures in vi
 sion and language problems\, showing that it flexibly and accurately appro
 ximates softmax attention in a variety of contexts. This work is with Can

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nCulminating in the recently announced launch of the
  Columbia Fusion Research Center\, Fusion at Columbia has been expanding i
 nto new directions and with new partners. This presentation will discuss a
  mix of fundamental research carried out at Columbia\, sponsored by the fe
 deral government\, and research in support of the growing private fusion s
 ector\, sponsored directly by industry. Technical topics to be discussed w
 ill be in the area fusion systems design\, applied plasma physics in suppo
 rt of fusion industry\, and new initiatives in fusion technology applied t
 o magnets\, blankets\, and fuel cycles. The role of partnerships will be e
 mphasized\, whether in collaboration with industry\, national laboratories
 \, or international partners.\n\nBio:\nCarlos Paz-Soldan is an Associate P
 rofessor of Applied Physics and Director of the Fusion Research Center at 
 Columbia University in the City of New York. He received his B.Sc.E degree
  in Engineering Physics from Queen’s University at Kingston in 2007 and 
 his Ph.D degree in Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 201
 2. After his Ph.D he worked as a scientist at General Atomics in San Diego
  until he was appointed with tenure to Columbia in 2021. Prof. Paz-Soldan
 ’s activities are motivated by the desire to solve the scientific and te
 chnological challenges standing in the way of harnessing controlled fusion
  energy on earth. He has contributed particularly to developing solutions 
 for transient off-normal event control in magnetic fusion devices. Prof. P
 az-Soldan is the recipient of the Marshall N. Rosenbluth Outstanding Docto
 ral Thesis Prize in 2013 and the Thomas H. Stix Award for Outstanding Earl
 y Career Contributions to Plasma Physics Research in 2021\, both from the 
 American Physical Society. He became an APS fellow in 2024.\n\n\nThe NERS 
 Colloquia Series invites leading researchers\, industry experts\, and thou
 ght leaders from across the nuclear engineering and radiological sciences 
 community to share their insights with students\, faculty\, and guests. Co
 vering a wide range of topics—from cutting-edge research and emerging te
 chnologies to policy\, education\, and professional development—the week

DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session work
 shop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various f
 orms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and soci
 al spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such cir
 cumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities exp
 erienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, s
 o that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action an
 d familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also 
 introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on h
 ow sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC work
 shop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and sp
 ace to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the begi
 nning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the proces
 s\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for
  the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios re
 lated to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle proce
 ss allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexiti
 es with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers 
 to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if
  faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collec
 tive building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all
  input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can alw
 ays pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open 
 but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you a
 re to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register fo
 r another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns wit

 tegist for the industry leader in sports entertainment. After a brief pres

 answer questions about Matt's journey\, what it's like to work for a major
  media organization\, and industry wisdom that can only come from years of
  experience in the field.\n\nAbout Matt in his own words:\n\\"I've spent m
 y career at the intersection of sports\, media\, and strategy\, doing the 
 kind of work where the stakes are high and the answers aren't obvious.\n\n
 At ESPN\, that meant building the models behind major live rights negotiat
 ions\, helping launch the company's first branded sports betting partnersh
 ip and leading a cross-company effort to rethink how we grow and engage th
 e next generation of sports fans. It's the work I've found most energizing

 ntial equations (PDEs). When these equations are too complicated to solve 
 by hand\, we use computers to find approximate solutions. A common approac
 h is to approximate the solution at a set of points\, known as a computati
 onal mesh\, spread throughout the region.\nWhile a fine mesh can be used t
 o provide a high-resolution approximation in the region\, using a fine mes
 h can be computationally expensive. Instead of using a fine mesh everywher
 e in the region\, adaptive mesh methods place more grid points where they

DESCRIPTION:Workplace discrimination in professional occupations remains a
 n important mechanism through which racial inequality is reproduced. Yet e
 xisting research tends to conceptualize discrimination through identifiabl
 e incidents or interactions\, leaving less understood how workers experien
 ce racialized treatment that is diffuse\, cumulative\, or difficult to tra
 nslate into institutionally recognizable terms. In order to fill this gap\
 , this research draws on 140 in-depth interviews with college-educated Bla
 ck professionals to investigate how workers perceive\, interpret\, and res
 pond to racialized treatment in professional workplaces. Findings reveal a
  striking uncertainty among participants regarding assessments of discrimi
 nation and their broader accounts of workplace life. While participants de
 scribed racialized comments\, differential evaluations\, heightened scruti
 ny\, exclusion\, disproportionate workloads\, and other forms of different
 ial treatment that accumulated across interactions and organizational proc
 esses\, they often did so without producing a singular incident they consi
 dered sufficiently consequential\, provable\, or reportable as discriminat
 ion. Notably\, 35% of these accounts came from individuals who had reporte
 d experiencing little or no discrimination in a pre-interview survey. I co
 nceptualize this diffuse organizational presence as the specter of discrim
 ination: the pervasive sense that race structures how one is perceived and
  treated at work even when its effects cannot always be located within a s
 ingular\, discrete discriminatory event. The specter generates racialized 
 interpretive and vigilant labor as workers scrutinize interactions and org
 anizational decisions\, assess their cumulative implications\, anticipate 
 future treatment\, and\, at times\, question whether what they experienced
  was racial discrimination at all. By shifting analytical attention from d
 iscrimination as a discrete event to racialization as an organizational pr
 esence that is experienced cumulatively across workplace life\, this study
  expands sociological understandings of how racial inequality is perceived
 \, navigated\, and reproduced in contemporary professional workplaces.

  behavioral heterogeneity. At the core of our investigation is the questio
 n of when and how individual behavior can be accurately inferred from aggr
 egate data\, particularly when individuals are susceptible to mistakes. Ad
 dressing this challenge requires bridging the gap between unobserved indiv
 idual choices and observed aggregate outcomes. To this end\, we first pres
 ent the “bounds” framework\, designed to constrain deviations from rat
 ional choice systematically. Then\, we establish com- prehensive results o
 n “decomposability\,” a key property ensuring that aggregate choice be
 havior accurately mirrors the underlying characteristics of individual dec

 The seminar will be held at 3 p.m. Friday (September 18) in ChemSci B002.\
 n\nPhillip's presentation is entitled: "From Houghton to Kathmandu: The Ti
 meline of New Drug Development"\n\nAbstract: Kathmandu\, Nepal\, has an ex
 cellent hospital system that is at the forefront of work on multidrug resi
 stance to antibacterial antibiotics. Hospitals there frequently see patien
 ts with lung and urinary tract infections caused by bacteria resistant to 
 all available antibiotics. When new antibiotics become available\, resista
 nce develops rapidly—sometimes within months or at best a few years. Thi
 s resistance can stem from many different causes. Resistance can stem from
  antibiotic transport out of the cell\, mutations that reduce antibiotic b
 inding to its receptor\, or the acquisition\, by gene transfer\, of an enz
 yme that modifies the antibiotic. Beta-lactamase enzymes produced by resis
 tant bacteria destroy beta-lactam antibiotics. These include penicillins\,
  cephalosporins\, carbapenems\, and monobactams. We published the first wo
 rk on boronic acids that inhibit beta-lactamase enzymes in 1983. Vaborbact
 am and Tanibactam\, developed by others\, are examples currently in medica
 l use. Several different families of beta-lactamases exist\, and the boron
 ic acids do not inhibit them all. This talk will describe our current work
  on a variety of agents that can protect the activity of beta-lactams and 
 other antibiotic families when used against Gram-positive and Gram-negativ
 e multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens. Most of the agents we have iden
 tified are not toxic to bacteria. For that reason\, we believe they are le
 ss likely to become subject to bacterial resistance.

 n\nUniversity of Kentucky\n\nAbstract\n\nCRISPR-based genome editing offer
 s a programmable approach to cancer therapy\, but its translation remains 
 limited by the challenge of controlling where editing becomes active in vi
 vo. Most current strategies rely primarily on vector biodistribution to de
 termine specificity. We are developing an alternative approach in which ge
 nome-editing activity is actively controlled after delivery.\nIn this semi
 nar\, I will describe a magnetically gated baculoviral (MBV) platform that
  combines external magnetic activation with intrinsic biological containme
 nt. Baculovirus\, an insect-derived virus that does not productively repli
 cate in mammalian cells\, provides transient CRISPR delivery and is rapidl
 y inactivated by complement following systemic dissemination. Magnetic nan
 oparticles coupled to the virus enhance local cellular entry under a magne
 tic field\, creating a physical ON switch together with a biological OFF s
 witch.\nWe applied this strategy to disrupt the immune-checkpoint gene Pdl
 1 within solid tumors. Baculoviral transduction activates interferon signa
 ling\, chemokine production\, antigen presentation\, and immune-cell recru
 itment\, but also induces compensatory PD-L1 upregulation. Local Pdl1 disr
 uption removes this inhibitory feedback while preserving antiviral immune 
 stimulation. In syngeneic tumor models\, MBV-mediated editing was confined
  to tumors without detectable editing in major organs\, remodeled dendriti
 c-cell and CD8⁺ T-cell states\, suppressed tumor growth\, and enhanced r
 esponses to CTLA-4 blockade. These studies establish a framework for combi
 ning physical control and biological safeguards to enable localized genome
  editing and cancer immunotherapy.\n\nBio\n\nSheng Tong\, Ph.D.\, is an As
 sociate Professor in the F. Joseph Halcomb III\, M.D. Department of Biomed
 ical Engineering at the University of Kentucky\, where he leads the Labora
 tory of Nanomedicine and Immunoengineering. His research focuses on develo
 ping externally controlled and biologically responsive technologies for ge
 nome editing\, cancer immunotherapy\, and therapeutic delivery. His labora
 tory integrates nanomedicine\, viral and nonviral delivery systems\, magne
 tic nanoparticles\, and immune engineering to control therapeutic activity
  in space and time. Current projects include magnetically controlled CRISP
 R genome editing for localized cancer immunotherapy\, engineered extracell
 ular vesicles for therapeutic delivery\, and magnetic regulation of immune
 -cell function. His research is supported by the National Institutes of He
 alth and the National Science Foundation.

 tain curves in a Grassmannian.\n\nIn this talk\, I will overview these con
 nections\, and go on to discuss recent joint work with Bulavka and Gandini
 .  We find a maximum subspace of k-forms in an n-variable exterior algebra
  that is self-annihilating but not annihilated by any 1-form.  A difficult
 y is that \\"not annihilated by any 1-form\\" is not a closed condition in
  the Grassmannian.  This work extends the Hilton-Milner theorem of extrema
 l set theory to the exterior algebra setting\, and answers questions of Sc
 ott and Wilmer and of my own.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  In this seminar we discuss a unified framework that
  combines explainable deep learning\, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) an
 d foundation models to advance both understanding and control of turbulenc
 e\, with direct implications for accelerated design and discovery. First\,
  we will show how explainable deep learning techniques can be used to iden
 tify the flow features that are truly responsible for key turbulent proces
 ses in wall-bounded flows. By systematically interrogating trained neural 
 networks\, we uncover the most influential coherent structures driving mom
 entum transport and drag. Our results reveal that classically studied stru
 ctures (while important) provide only a partial and sometimes misleading p
 erspective\, motivating a more data-driven and physics-aware view of turbu
 lence organization. Building on these insights\, we will demonstrate how d
 eep reinforcement learning can be used to actively control turbulent flows
  by targeting the dynamically relevant structures identified through expla
 inability. This approach achieves over 30% drag reduction in canonical wal
 l-bounded turbulence and extends naturally to more complex configurations\
 , including turbulent wings\, highlighting the scalability of learning-bas
 ed control strategies. Finally\, we will introduce a foundation-model-base
 d framework for accelerated design\, optimization and scientific discovery
 . By learning compact\, interpretable latent representations of high-dimen
 sional flow physics\, these models (combined with agentic-AI systems) enab
 le rapid exploration of design spaces\, causal reasoning and closed-loop o
 ptimization\, bridging the gap between expensive simulations\, control and
  engineering decision making. Together\, these results illustrate how expl
 ainable and agentic AI are becoming essential for turbulence physics\, flo

 gularities\, intimately related to the monodromy of the Milnor fiber\, the
  log canonical threshold\, and rational and Du Bois singularities. A class
 ical method introduced by Kashiwara and refined by Lichtin provides estima
 tes for the roots of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial in terms of a log resol
 ution. In this talk\, we extend their method to log resolutions by orbifol
 ds\, which has applications to the singularities of weighted homogeneous a
 nd Khovanskii non-degenerate complete intersections.

DESCRIPTION:Where a gemstone or a grain of gold comes from is no longer a 
 question only paper trails can answer. Emeralds show what is possible: usi
 ng the largest global dataset available\, more than 1\,000 LA-ICP-MS analy
 ses of gem-quality emeralds\, machine learning models trained on just eigh
 t trace elements (Li\, V\, Cr\, Fe\, Sc\, Ga\, Rb\, Cs) determine geograph
 ic origin with 96.8% accuracy. Gold is the harder problem\, and the more u
 rgent: illegal mining in the Amazon drives mercury contamination and opaqu
 e supply chains. We are now applying the same architecture to native gold\
 , building the curated reference datasets needed to test whether source-re
 lated groupings can be resolved across the geologically heterogeneous Amaz
 onian craton\, a stringent challenge given low trace-element concentration
 s and overlapping geochemical signatures. Built on well-documented referen
 ce collections such as Harvard's and partner Brazilian institutions\, this
  work provides an initial basis for geochemical screening of mercury-linke
 d illicit supply chains\, and a template for the future of mineral traceab
 ility.

  an efficient domain decomposition (DD) moving mesh method for solving the
  Cahn-Hilliard (CH) phase-field model in two and three spatial dimensions.
  The CH phase-field model describes phase separation phenomenon in binary 
 mixtures and has been used in various important phase-field applications s
 uch as tumor growth simulation and multiphase fluid flows. The DD method p
 roceeds by splitting the computational domain into overlapping subdomains\
 , and employing the adaptive mesh method to compute the solution of the ph
 ase-field model on each subdomain. The implementation of the parallel comp
 utations is straightforward\, and this helps to reduce the computational c
 ost for both the adaptive mesh generation and solution of the phase-field 
 equation. We demonstrate the performance of the DD adaptive mesh method fo
 r the CH phase-field model using several numerical experiments in both two

 sain (1952-1999) straddled painting\, drawing\, performance\, video\, and 
 installation. She turned to the latter three modes in the mid-nineties\, f
 ollowing the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya and the ensuing ant
 i-Muslim violence in her adopted city of Bombay. This talk will analyze Hu
 ssain’s shifting approach to her artistic practice during this period\, 
 as her postmodernist allegories in paint gave way to feminist interrogatio
 ns of identity\, representation and signification using objects\, language
  and the body.\n\nRattanamol Singh Johal is the Shireen and Afzal Ahmad As
 sistant Professor in history of art at the University of Michigan\, Ann Ar
 bor. His current book project\, *Forms of Despair*\, offers an account of
